Today we’ve launched Steam Game Recording into Beta, a new built-in system for creating and sharing your gameplay footage, that works on any game on Steam.

From capturing highlights to documenting entire campaigns, there are many ways to use this all-new set of features.

Go to the Game Recording website to learn all about it and how to try it out.

Dang, built-in recording. I wonder how the quality will be, as well as how much resources it'll be using. Interesting. 👀

Still waiting for the new steam family sharing to leave beta

I'm definitely eager to try it out!

I am however not that much for Steam Families...

I won't get much out of family sharing... just occasional access to big shiny games like BG3, its more to share my stuff with family friends and my Nephew(I trust him enough to not get VAC/game bans)

I actually use this feature with my brother-in-law who lives on the other side of the world. It works, but they have to log in via your PC to accept the request. It's working perfectly fine like it did before, but now it's better. Asking them to use the QR code helps not store their credentials or something.

Interesting. Just to confirm, you are indeed talking about the new Steam Families feature in beta, not the existing Family Share?

Yes, the new one.

I am also looking with half an eye on the new Steam Families and waiting for it leave beta. Though it depends how strict they are on the same household rule. My brother and sister are in the same country roughly 400 km away. So, I am not in the same household as them.

So far the reports are a bit conflicting that some people say that same country still works while others say that they have cracked down on that the longer the beta goes.

An IRL of mine almost exclusively uses mobile data (4G) to use Internet and play games (and everything else). That means that the IP address changes very regularly, and the "location" constantly changes all over the country... So either Steam thinks they're constantly moving around all over the place, or using a VPN, lol.
What I mean is that in cases like this it would be kinda hard to enforce the household rule (also what about people that actually move around a lot).

But, yeah. Same. 👁

🙄Hmm...

Unless there is a change to the extent that subtitles are automatically generated and real-time translation into multiple languages is granted....
Or will they eventually expand the Steam wallet when they become streamers on Steam...?

It suddenly felt like a foreshadowing of Steam becoming like youtube.
It seems like an interesting implementation test, both in a good and bad way, since so many unipolar services have been wielding restrictions on expression and speech lately.🤔🎮🕹📺💻

It could be a good change if people could upload in-game material to the community hub of a game - screenshots are nice, but not having to rely on promotional official videos in the store, or having to go to youtube to see actual gameplay - it's good IMO.

Seems like a really neat feature to me. I normally use Medal to clip gameplays to share with friends here and there, but some features I want are locked to the premium version. I've yet to try it, but from what I read on the news page it's already kinda polished and feature-rich. Even if it's not better, at the very least I think this may deter the "enshittification" of other recording software due to new competition.

Oh yeah, Medal. I thought of trying it out once, but never did, and forgot why, lol. Also for mobile, but seeing my tablet was choking on Mobizen I tried anything else, lol (that was ages ago).

Hope Steam recording works out for you!

Will use this in reviews moving forward. It's a better representative of the game than just screenshots.

I see you have an RTX card, why not just use Shadowplay (and/or Instant Replay, and/or also Highlights in applicable games)? I mean, instead of screenshots, before this came out.
Genuine question - it's the second time I mention it in the thread; it's not that I'm shilling for it or something lol, it's just that it seems practical to me (for recording; I prefer using OBS just for streaming instead).

But, well, now that Steam will do it natively, that works too, lol.

It was mainly because I wasn't aware about it and because I didn't wanted to do the whole hassle of uploading and such. I prefer if it was natively. I use OBS for recording, but then I have to process it, make it into a small gif, and such, which kinda takes time when I wanna push out a review.

Thank you! I'm certain it will if they are allowed in reviews. If not, happy to share gameplay and maybe even consider using that for my videos as footage.

Well, they aren't supported in the Video Showcase... 😅 Hopefully that works different in reviews. I mean, you can put screenshots and YouTube links there, why not Steam videos? 🤔

Great new feature and this is why Epic are still so far behind - Steam still make fun and nice updates - not prefect at all but still good

This, and so many other things... Even if Epic comes closer to Steam in terms of features one day, it'll still be hard to have old Steam users entirely move over. Maybe use it more, but Steam will surely remain the #1 game launcher/store/platform for years to come.

Sounds like something I'll never use that's going to make the Steam client even more resource greedy than it already is...
And still no library management...

99% agree. I might use it, at least to try it out. Having so many new features definitely isn't an entirely good thing, though, I entirely agree. I hope it can be entirely disabled, preventing it to use resources when not being used.

What do you mean by library management? (genuine question)

I mean, it's awesome if it's useful to some people, I get it, we live in the era of streaming and "content creation" but that really should be an optional module you can opt out of or opt in.

Oh I don't know. Subcategories? just an example of the top of my head.

Totally agree.

Subcategories

hmm
I see. I think. 🤔
I was thinking about user-assigned tags, but like, just for the library, not to "vote" on the store page. Would be handier than having 540964 collections. The library management options as they are now are already mostly enough for me though, that's why I'm curious what others think is missing. ^^

I am in the process of purging my library of games I completed and will never play again (Wish I could give them away like good books) and freebies I grabbed because you know... they were free but will never play in my lifetime even if I didn't have such a huge treasure trove of unplayed games I mean to play first.
Still I have a lot of games and like you say the massive amount of collections end up being a maze in itself so I just wish I could categorize them more easily

An interesting feature, but I'm guessing that most people who do recording are comfortable using something like Open Broadcaster and the like and probably won't bother switching.

Yep. Well, at least OBS is an additional software you'll have to actively launch, so it would kind of make sense to just use Steam instead... But Nvidia's GeForce Experience is usually always running, so it's already there (just like Steam). (not sure if AMD has a similar thing)
Edit: also, Xbox Game Bar.

It could be nice however for people that aren't familiar with OBS, and will now learn that they can simply use their game launcher to record the cool stuff they do in their game(s).
Personally, my only issue with it is that it would lead to Steam eating even more resources. :/

Just a heads up for anyone using that feature.

The "Video Showcase" for 6k from the point shop doesn't allow you to use these videos or clips, at least currently. So if you are planning on getting the showcase for this reason, you probably want to hold off. I wanted to post this to prevent anyone from making the mistake I made.

I do want to mention that the recording feature is really cool and I tried it a few times with no issues. So far so good.

I've tested it out on MTG Arena and Marvel SNAP so far. Both are running at 1000k+ FPS and I used 12Mbps as well as 24Mbps(current max) stream quality and both seem good. I don't upload videos or stream, so I don't really know much about this type of thing. It's very easy to use.

Here's a clip I made in 12Mbps
