Dang, built-in recording. I wonder how the quality will be, as well as how much resources it'll be using. Interesting. 👀

November 6th update: it's out of Beta!

Still waiting for the new steam family sharing to leave beta

I'm definitely eager to try it out!

I am however not that much for Steam Families...

I won't get much out of family sharing... just occasional access to big shiny games like BG3, its more to share my stuff with family friends and my Nephew(I trust him enough to not get VAC/game bans)

I actually use this feature with my brother-in-law who lives on the other side of the world. It works, but they have to log in via your PC to accept the request. It's working perfectly fine like it did before, but now it's better. Asking them to use the QR code helps not store their credentials or something.

Interesting. Just to confirm, you are indeed talking about the new Steam Families feature in beta, not the existing Family Share?

I am also looking with half an eye on the new Steam Families and waiting for it leave beta. Though it depends how strict they are on the same household rule. My brother and sister are in the same country roughly 400 km away. So, I am not in the same household as them.

So far the reports are a bit conflicting that some people say that same country still works while others say that they have cracked down on that the longer the beta goes.

An IRL of mine almost exclusively uses mobile data (4G) to use Internet and play games (and everything else). That means that the IP address changes very regularly, and the "location" constantly changes all over the country... So either Steam thinks they're constantly moving around all over the place, or using a VPN, lol.
What I mean is that in cases like this it would be kinda hard to enforce the household rule (also what about people that actually move around a lot).

But, yeah. Same. 👁

🙄Hmm...

Unless there is a change to the extent that subtitles are automatically generated and real-time translation into multiple languages is granted....
Or will they eventually expand the Steam wallet when they become streamers on Steam...?

It suddenly felt like a foreshadowing of Steam becoming like youtube.
It seems like an interesting implementation test, both in a good and bad way, since so many unipolar services have been wielding restrictions on expression and speech lately.🤔🎮🕹📺💻

It could be a good change if people could upload in-game material to the community hub of a game - screenshots are nice, but not having to rely on promotional official videos in the store, or having to go to youtube to see actual gameplay - it's good IMO.

Seems like a really neat feature to me. I normally use Medal to clip gameplays to share with friends here and there, but some features I want are locked to the premium version. I've yet to try it, but from what I read on the news page it's already kinda polished and feature-rich. Even if it's not better, at the very least I think this may deter the "enshittification" of other recording software due to new competition.

Oh yeah, Medal. I thought of trying it out once, but never did, and forgot why, lol. Also for mobile, but seeing my tablet was choking on Mobizen I tried anything else, lol (that was ages ago).

Hope Steam recording works out for you!

Will use this in reviews moving forward. It's a better representative of the game than just screenshots.

I see you have an RTX card, why not just use Shadowplay (and/or Instant Replay, and/or also Highlights in applicable games)? I mean, instead of screenshots, before this came out.
Genuine question - it's the second time I mention it in the thread; it's not that I'm shilling for it or something lol, it's just that it seems practical to me (for recording; I prefer using OBS just for streaming instead).

But, well, now that Steam will do it natively, that works too, lol.

It was mainly because I wasn't aware about it and because I didn't wanted to do the whole hassle of uploading and such. I prefer if it was natively. I use OBS for recording, but then I have to process it, make it into a small gif, and such, which kinda takes time when I wanna push out a review.

Great new feature and this is why Epic are still so far behind - Steam still make fun and nice updates - not prefect at all but still good

This, and so many other things... Even if Epic comes closer to Steam in terms of features one day, it'll still be hard to have old Steam users entirely move over. Maybe use it more, but Steam will surely remain the #1 game launcher/store/platform for years to come.

Sounds like something I'll never use that's going to make the Steam client even more resource greedy than it already is...
And still no library management...

99% agree. I might use it, at least to try it out. Having so many new features definitely isn't an entirely good thing, though, I entirely agree. I hope it can be entirely disabled, preventing it to use resources when not being used.

What do you mean by library management? (genuine question)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I mean, it's awesome if it's useful to some people, I get it, we live in the era of streaming and "content creation" but that really should be an optional module you can opt out of or opt in.

Oh I don't know. Subcategories? just an example of the top of my head.

Totally agree.

Subcategories

hmm
I see. I think. 🤔
I was thinking about user-assigned tags, but like, just for the library, not to "vote" on the store page. Would be handier than having 540964 collections. The library management options as they are now are already mostly enough for me though, that's why I'm curious what others think is missing. ^^

I am in the process of purging my library of games I completed and will never play again (Wish I could give them away like good books) and freebies I grabbed because you know... they were free but will never play in my lifetime even if I didn't have such a huge treasure trove of unplayed games I mean to play first.
Still I have a lot of games and like you say the massive amount of collections end up being a maze in itself so I just wish I could categorize them more easily

Digital age...

Yeah, I hide (and private, now that it's a thing) shovelware and stuff (like the ones for cards), but I don't want to hide games I really enjoyed but am just most likely not going to play again...

I wouldnt generalize and i think most peoples uses wont be that. Im 'antisocial'(online) meaning no social media proper, i barely shared steam screenshots and i already used the recordings twice- not for sharing btw. at least the constant recording is an easy way to re-watch what just happened- like clues for a puzzle someone forgot to take notes, missed cutscene etc.

I already used the recording to catch a tutorial popup ive missed and to discuss in an online match who i saw doing what- i was talking about someone i hadnt noticed their nick, went back in the recording and could check proper to adress the ones involved in the chat.

Mileage of course will vary. I for one use notes all the time (game notes, reminders, tips to remenber later) and ive also always used screenshots (generally i 100% screenshot tutorials, mission objetives and such)

I think you and others didnt notice the feature is OPT-IN. It doesnt uses any resource whatsoever unles turned on (twice btw, first one needs to turn the feature on, then press record during play). The exception is the background always recording but thats even more optional (an option inside a option you first must turn on)

Theres nothing in this kind of feature that would require changes to the client or the overlay for everyone even if turned off. Also those concerned with performance can turn the whole overlay off -now that can make a difference just by existing, its a wrapper and that is the part steam made 'opt-out' that many may not realize. The recording usue the same wrapper as the overlay so it isnt adding anyything resource wise unless actually recording (and cant do so with the overlay turned off).

Before i upgraded my machine i only ran steam with in-game overlay disabled, i could see/feel its impact. Turned it off and made no difference, no impact performance wise (wich i checked btw, comparing numbers of some drm free humble game with its steam counterpart). idk how the much the latest overlay may impact things, idk if its better or worse then before, but that is the main target of worry not a recording turned off...

Btw windows is the same, and so are modern gpus. In windows 10 theres the windows gamebar wich can record; both nvidia and amd have recording... in all those cases theres no impact if its turned off/unused. Same with steam.

Im testing the recording right now (with constant recording btw) and so far i havent noticed any difference in performance BUT i havent tried a heavy game for my setup yet. But most games i play arent that demanding for me, so thats likely the reason.

Thanks for the heads up Vincer. I will look into the options and settings.
The old client was still much more compact and less of a resource whore but it's a battle lost so I gave up on the possibility of a light client.
I'm just worried that it's going to end up being one of those christmas tree apps where they hang so many addon features that are only useful to some that it will topple down.

I feel you, i upgraded my machine not too long ago, before that i felt steams weight way more. Now that win7 support been dropped im now worrying when valve will drop the hammer on win 10 because i definetly dont want win 11...

Oh boy, don't even whisper that! We don't want to give them any ideas yet.
My sister bought a Lenovo with insane specs and windows 11 is hogging so much she is considering running Linux and going for a dual boot only for gaming. I already hate Win10, I can't imagine being forced into 11.

win 11 should be good but microsoft intentionally makes it worse, pushing edge and their apps, their annoying telemetry and now that whole AI recall thing theyre starting to rollout (huge security hazard and too much personal data for them). I already struggle with win 10, ive did some debloating but every now and then some update turns on telemetry i had turned off and apparently this kind of behaviour got worse on win11.

I have hopes tough- the latest numbers show a decrease in win11 adoption and a INCREASE in win10 machines, that despite microsoft announcing ending support for win 10 soon(trend after the anouncement) and at least for now ive learned they were making/selling more win 10 pcs recently... so i have hope someone up there is aware, and bad numbers on win 11 may shift leads on the next windows for someone who can tone things down...

Sadly windows will never be lightweight or respectful like an OS should (heck, only linux does that) but i hope they dial back to win-10 levels of annoyance at least with windows 12 or whatever comes next

Yeah the AI slippery slope was a sure thing. I spent a week preparing to help my sister find all the privacy invasion settings and they're hidden everywhere. So ofc they were going to screw up massively with AI, more or less intentionally and they have been caught so many times, you'd think they would try to lighten things up in later versions but let's find out.

An interesting feature, but I'm guessing that most people who do recording are comfortable using something like Open Broadcaster and the like and probably won't bother switching.

Yep. Well, at least OBS is an additional software you'll have to actively launch, so it would kind of make sense to just use Steam instead... But Nvidia's GeForce Experience is usually always running, so it's already there (just like Steam). (not sure if AMD has a similar thing)
Edit: also, Xbox Game Bar.

It could be nice however for people that aren't familiar with OBS, and will now learn that they can simply use their game launcher to record the cool stuff they do in their game(s).
Personally, my only issue with it is that it would lead to Steam eating even more resources. :/

Just a heads up for anyone using that feature.

The "Video Showcase" for 6k from the point shop doesn't allow you to use these videos or clips, at least currently. So if you are planning on getting the showcase for this reason, you probably want to hold off. I wanted to post this to prevent anyone from making the mistake I made.

I do want to mention that the recording feature is really cool and I tried it a few times with no issues. So far so good.

I've tested it out on MTG Arena and Marvel SNAP so far. Both are running at 1000k+ FPS and I used 12Mbps as well as 24Mbps(current max) stream quality and both seem good. I don't upload videos or stream, so I don't really know much about this type of thing. It's very easy to use.

Here's a clip I made in 12Mbps

Video editing feature would be yet another resource-eating source, though... But, we'll see!

Permalink

That would only use resources 1)if someone turned on the feature 2) recorded something 3) intentionally open the recordings, only then the editor executable runs. Its like a program now prepackaged with steam. The only non-optional part is however many mbs that new program weights in the disk but my guess wouldnt be more then 200mb (its very very simplistic)
