"Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

You have a limited number of Trading Card drops for each game that does not reset.

Additional cards can be gained through Steam Trading or purchasing them off the Community Market."

Well, shit.

They don't know what they're doing themselves...
Read here
look especially on this line: Future in-game purchases will result in more card drops.

It doesn't make any sense compared to this support answer.

You do have a point. We'll see how it goes.

It depends on how you read it.

It says DOTA2 and Team Fortress 2 have a different mechanic because they are f2p games. It does still mention a drop limit, though. The only question is whether you can reset or increase that limit with future in-game purchases.

Valve might have decided that the number of cards should be related to the price of the game. In that case, they could have decided that continual in-game purchases should increase how many cards you can get from that game. (Which would also conveniently encourage people to spend more money in those games.)

It sounds like there are a lot of problems with the system, anyway. Features aren't working. Card drops aren't working right in some games. Crafted coupons have issues. (In the thread you linked, one commenter said he ended up paying full price for a game that he had a 90% off coupon for. Another commenter received a coupon for a game that isn't sold outside of a bundle, and the couple doesn't apply for the bundle.) Steam Support won't give clear answers, which is par for the course for Steam Support.

It looks like another half-thought out and poorly executed idea for Steam, like Greenlight. Or arguably like half the stuff that Valve introduces in general. It may be in beta, but Valve really should have had it in better shape, and communicated how it works (or at least is supposed to work) better than they've done.

I'd rather expect Valve to make CardsShop where you can buy each card for $2 instead of resets.

each card no, but I do expect them to sell booster packs or something like that.

That's better idea.

But for some reason, I think it will turn out to be "Missing a card? Buy pack for $10 hoping you'll get one missing, while we'll give you 4 copies of most common in market place and 5th you already have" :P

It's possible they're using a script, but I somehow doubt that was an automated message.

The current cards have "Series 1", so that would lead me to believe they plan on having more. I could see them resetting when the new series is released, but this is BETA so nothing is concrete anyway.

If it really doesn't reset, I can't see even a few percent of the steam users go after this further than the first few days, me included.

FAQ updated - Drop limits & Dota 2

tf2/dota2 = 1 more card drop for around $9 in game items

other games = no reset

Sad :/

Moronic. People will make a $1 purchase of a TF2 item on an alt account and get 5 more cards rather than spending $9/card.

(edit to add, I'm calling the system moronic, not you... o.O )

Premium accounts get the 5 cards only if they were premium prior to the trading card beta going live, I think. So no, you'd have to spend the $9 to get one more, and just buying a 50 cent item to become premium won't give you 5 card slots.

Why are people so hyped on these cards? I don't get it.

They seem to do nothing.

You could easily extend that; games only waste time, they don't do anything useful either.

OK let's see then. They allow you to set a profile background, they let you spam chat with annoying icons, they make you money. That's quite a bit more than most games.

Yeah. It is prolly a good idea to sell them on the market now and rebuy the ones you need later when the prices drop to approx 0.2 €

What I'm confused about is the foil cards. If you only have a limited number of drops and you have to be level ten to get a chance at getting them and the only way to get to level ten is to have participated in past Summer/Winter sales or get complete sets of cards. Then a large majority will then have reached their limit before they reach level ten and then have no chance at getting a foil card without paying a large amount of money on the marketplace.
