I created my first giveaway today and when I went to check if anyone had entered yet it said it had over 4 billion entries.
Is this common or is there something wrong?

Happened to me but on SteamTrades for negative feedbacks.

See here: http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/ukKAA/leaving-4-false-negative-feedbacks-on-st-edit-solved-now-have-negative-billions-integer/page/31337

A glitch in the database. Send over a support ticket to have it rectified. But of course not for giveaway - it's not important. Maybe for a reference in the future if you have a problem like I had.

It's the number -1 being interpreted as an unsigned, 32-bit integer.

In other words, a bug in the software this site runs on.
