Older version runs waaaay better on weaker hardware. My budget 2012 rig couldn't run it.
Overall, I'd say that the original is a sure bet without a doubt.
The main thing that the new version introduces is 64-bit and it already looks really good so you don't have to really download any ENBs or graphics mods.
TL;DR: Original for weaker PCs and more mods. Remaster for 64-bit stability and better graphics.

The graphics overhaul in my eyes was really good. But I did go from an old PC's medium settings Skyrim to a new PC's highest setting remaster. It might've played a role there. I like the idea of 64-bit, but I'd say that they should've just included that with Skyrim to begin with. So, luckily there's no reason to add graphics mods there :D

Still a low-effort overpriced blatant rip-off that serves only the purpose of tacking on paid mods on the Elder Scrolls crowd with zero substantial improvements or additions over the original game, which includes having the exact same fucking bugs Skyrim had half a decade ago, despite easy-to-integrate community patches being available.

Special Edition is still full of bugs, that's madness(and Special Edition has way more bugs than Original). And controversial change of gamma(Original boring grey tones were worse, but now Skyrim just looks inadequately sometimes. As if some Riverwood became part of Oblivion-plane) adds some bad feelings.
So mods are almost obligatory, and console is the best friend.

It took a while, but it eventually made it to SE:

Look how good SE looks:

lol - I have 100s hours in TES games, and never finished any of them.. I just get too distracted exploring and side quests etc. Love that about the game though - even if I start with a mind set "FOLLOW MAIN QUESTS ONLY!" it falls apart within minutes :D

Exactly. I tried Skyrim three times I think, each time for about 50 hours (perhaps more the first time). Still haven't passed the main quest at the biggest mountain.
Lots of side quests, crafting, housing with the DLC. Then I get bored, I want to pause for a week that becomes months or years. And when I come back, I'm lost, and I create a new character. Then repeat.
That was way worse in Oblivion, I only saved the prince's ass, aka the very beginning of the main quest, and totally dodged the rest.
I'm doing the same for Fallout 4, a long pause that will make me start the game from the beginning :/

I haven't played it yet, but honestly, I like the Special Edition because I got it for free. If I had to pay for it after buying the original, I would've lost some respect for Bethesda. Anyone who has the original should get the SE for free. It doesn't add any actual new content (from what I know), and the game is from 2011 so

Yeah, I know. "Anyone who has the original SHOULD get the SE for free."
That's why I said that.

Both versions are still in my backlog. :(
Is there a community patch of some kind to fix the bugs in SSE?
What appeals to me about SSE is that I believe adding any mod will disable achievements-- which is exactly what I want. I want to play/enjoy the game without worrying about achievements.

Eh ... I wasn't super impressed with Skyrim to begin with and the Special Edition is just prettier Skyrim. I did really like the gameplay, but it could only hold up everything else for so long and at some point I was like "Why am I still playing this?"

Vanilla Skyrim is pretty bad. A crappy console port. The menus make you want to gauge your eyes out. Thank god for Skyrim UI mod. Also graphics are pretty weak for the time, you need mods upon mods to make it pretty.
So from that perspective considering how the community had to step up and fix the game and make the game that Bethesda should've made, Skyrim is a weak game.

As time goes on, games tend to find their proper place in their critical perception.
Examples like: Murdered: Soul Suspect which was critically panned on release, but now has people saying "It's alright." to even saying "Daaaamn boii. This is a dope game!"
Or Tropico 5, which had people also hate it at first, but accept it more as time went on.
There are more examples to be found, but my point is that usually for whatever reason (whether they are patches or just the recalibration of expectations etc) critical reception tends to morph over time.
Skyrim's Special Edition is now nearing that moment as well.
So, what do you think of the Special Edition now?
