Hey guys, as my library is getting bigger and bigger I've finally decided to start sorting it, and I might use a hint or two, especially when it comes to categories. For now, my layout is following:
Action / Adventure (Dead Space, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, etc.)
Adventure (Broken Sword, Deponia, The Walking Dead, etc.)
Clickers (Clicker Heroes, AdVenture Capitalist, etc.)
Moba (Dota 2, etc.)
Platformer (Bit.Trip., Limbo, Mark of the Ninja, Shank, etc.)
Puzzle (Lucid, World of Goo, etc.)
Racing (Grid, Dirt, etc.)
Rogue-Like (Isaac, Spelunky, etc.)
RPG (Borderlands, Dark Souls, Deus Ex, Fallout, etc.)
RPG Action (Bastion, Transistor, Costume Quest, etc.)
RPG Hack & Slash (Titan Quest, Torchlight, etc.)
RPG MMO (Rift, etc.)
Shoot'em up (Jamestown, Sine Mora, etc.)
Shooter FPS (Bioshock, CoD, etc.)
Shooter 3rd (Spec Ops, Space Marine, etc.)
Strategy Real-time (Age of Empires, Warhammer 40K, etc.)
Strategy Tower-Defense (Dungeon Defenders, Orcs Must Die, Defense Grid, etc.)
Strategy Turn-Base (Invisible, Civ V, XCOM, etc.)
X - Never to bother with

I don't think it's enough, I feel like I'm missing something. I'm not sure where to put games like War of the Roses or Timberman.
What's your system?

I don't get the distinction between installed and uninstalled backlog, wouldn't it be pretty obvious?

Easier to spot since steam orders by alphabetical order

Sounds like a good point but there's already a default installed filter so this just seem to me like it's doing nothing :)

Either I don't know where it is or it aint default. Because I've tried moving one installed game to the uninstalled backlog and it is still alphabetical

In my client under the Library menu there are the default filters Recent, which seem to be almost all my games, Installed about half of my games and Favorites consisting of 23 games. If I toggle the Installed menu item my client alternates between showing all my games and only the ones that are installed.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying it's something wrong with the way you're organizing your library was just curious because, to me, your distinction and manual sorting doesn't seem to be worth the effort :)

I use something like that to, but i also sort the ones i already played and uninstalled between Good, neutral and bad.
So i never install a bad game again.
The nerver playing i use for the ones i dont even want to play not the ones i already played and was bad.

Action Hack & Slash perhaps, as for Timberman you can put as Indie (Action Indie)

If I have more than one game from the same franchise I create a category with the name of that franchise, for the rest I go by game genre.

I start at 3 games. I can deal with 2, I can't with 3 or more. That's silly, but hey.

  • Favorites (games I'm playing or I will play soon)
  • A voir (I'm French. It's a "I may play these games one day, I've better to do for now" category)
  • En pause (games I've started then left for another time)
  • Saga Deus Ex
  • Saga Hitman
  • Saga L'Oeil Noir (The Dark Eye)
  • Saga Resident Evil
  • Saga Stalker
  • Terminé ("Ended")
  • Trash Can

Pour de vrai en plus ! C'est une double peine, d'être à la fois du Haut-Rhin et d'être blacklisté pour ça !

∞ - games that don't really have an end in the traditional sense
Alpha - games I am/should be/want to be playing
Limbo - games I don't have an interest in at this point in time
Omega - finished games

Simple, yet effective.

I use something like this:

  • Action
  • Action RPG
  • Arcade
  • Adventure
  • Graphic Adventures (p&c)
  • Beat em' Up
  • Strategy / Tower D
  • Fighting
  • HOG
  • Platform
  • Puzzle / Casual
  • Rogue
  • Role
  • Shoot em' Up
  • Simulator
  • Survival / Crafting

Helps to decide depending on my mood or the time I have in that moment.
Lot of casual/arcade lately xD

I put Timberman in Casual (it could also be on Arcade)

I like to keep things simple, so it's just two categories: unfinished games and finished games.

Edit: And there are some hidden from view, but very few. Mainly some multiplayer versions of older games.

I love how many people list a category for crap. I hide those from my library.

You should probably start with broad categories like RPG, to break it into manageable chunks. If a category gets too big, then break it up

But if you must, stealth my fhphone be a good category for you

I use depressurizer to manage my library, it allows initial auto category based on steam store's tags and then easy reassignment
To answer your question, you'll never be 100% happy, specially if you have little OCD like me :p

Games can be set to have several categories. My library looks almost the same (Games like Deponia and Monkey Island are set as "Point'n'click") and some games addittionally appear at "Favourites" where I temporarily add games I work on for achievements as well.
