Current System ---
The giveaway creator is able to input a Steam key when making the giveaway. This key may be displayed to the winner of the giveaway by toggling a button to "Show Key," or hidden from the winner by toggling it to "Hide Key."

Suggestion (from UltraTaber) ---
Add a button the the winner's page called "Accept Key" which will then display the key to the winner (assuming the creator has toggled his button to "Show Key"). This is a one-time event, independent of the creator's toggle, and once triggered, cannot be undone. Once the button is pressed, it will be known that the key has been seen and possibly used by the winner.

Benefits ---

  • The giveaway creator will know if no one has viewed the key, making it safe to give to another person.
  • The winner will be able to ignore the key in the case of multiple wins, making a re-roll easier.
  • The mods will be able to verify whether or not a winner has accepted/viewed a key or not, making follow-through easier.

Drawbacks ---

  • The button will have to be coded into the Won page.
  • There will be some small increase in the demand upon the site's database.
  • This improvement will still not prevent abuse by unscrupulous users, albeit the abuse will be easier to track..

Does this sound like a good idea to you?

Yes. I think it would be of benefit.
No. When they were passing out brains, you must have heard "trains" and said "I'll take a nice, slow one, please."
As there is no potato option, I choose to vote "kumquat."

Sounds like an excellent improvement even it's not 100% "abuse-proof" :-)

CON: key could already be used or incomplete or mistyped or fake. But user will have said he has accepted it.

The result would be no different than what we have now. Just because the winner has seen the key doesn't mean it's usable.

Reply to GA creator and state that the key was fake/invalid. Then if no response after 7 days contact Support.

I think it would be good to be able to reject a key for a auto re-roll. I don't think the system should kick you out of all give aways for a game you just won. The first one could be a bad key.

Is the "Accept Key" button an addition to the current system or will it replace the GA creator's "Show Key" button?

An addition would be fine, but IMHO the GA creator should still have the option to "take a closer look" at the winners profile before making the key accessible.

This is an addition to the current system. The creator still has the toggle of showing/hiding the key.

That would be great actually! With steamgifts games it's easy to know if someone actually got your game even if they don't install it.

With keys they could just take it and activate the game in another account and then say the key was not working -_-

This will be really helpful. By the way please put some more cat pictures in the winning. I am getting tired of seeing the same cat each day :P :P

I know you will say don't win daily then you wont see the same cat

I wanted to make a suggestion, but I think I'll just add it here. It's an alternate mechanism. Note that I haven't won a game on SG2, and have no idea how keys are delivered, but I hope I'm on the mark.

The idea: Show only one key to the user at a time. They can mark it as 'activated' or 'bad key' and only then move on to see the key for the next game won. If a user marked a key as activated and won other keys of the same game, these giveaways could be automatically rerolled.

This can still be abused, but will reduce honest mistakes and provide a better way to track incidents of bad keys or abuse (marking 'bad key' to accept multiple wins) or highlight them automatically for support.

I think that would enforce good behaviour better than an 'accept key' button.

The idea: Show only one key to the user at a time.

Implementing an "Accept Key" button would accomplish this. I don't see how you can activate the button to reveal the key for more than one giveaway at a time except by using a script, and that would be pointless since you aren't going to be looking at more than one web page at a time.

Given that I have no idea how giveaways are accepted, it's possible that there's a very small difference.

However, I would assume that seeing a key could not be used automatically to disable other wins for the same game, because it's possible that the key isn't valid. So either such wins are disabled and the legitimate winner might suffer, or more than one of the same game can be legitimately clicked by the user.

On the other hand if a user needs to mark the key as activated or invalid, then marking a key as activated is a clear indication that other wins for the game can be rerolled.

Also having the ability of marking a key as invalid is useful.

This is not a huge difference, but it does make things clearer to the user, and forces the user to lie in order to cheat. The user can't claim to have just misunderstood.

Reducing misunderstanding is something that's very helpful. I know that it kind of goes against the SG philosophy of making things as obscure as possible and then berating users for not reading the FAQ, but one can hope that this attitude will change one of these days.
