Is there a way to know if a key is taken or not?

I have quite a few (~50) keys from different steam games, however I do not know which are taken and which aint.
Is there a way to know so I can make some giveaways?

Regards

Not that I know of. Only way is to actually enter the key into steam.
How the hell did you get so many keys anyways :o

Best option:

You could give them to a trusted person who has nearly all games, then it says "You already have this game" or "This product has already been used" and he can tell you which are used.

Are you sure you get a different dialog in that case and not always the same "You already have this game"-message?
Never had the chance to try it :(

Yep.

No, this doesn't work. Steam checks to see if you own the game before it checks if the key has been used.

You sure? My memory must be playing tricks on me again then :(

I can state from personal experience that if you use a key for a game that you own you get the "already owned" message regardless of if the key has been used before or not.

I activated a key and then immediately tried to activate the same key: already owned message.

Yeah I've tried this myself. It does not work.

I've tried it and it does.

Well you're a wizard then because there's been threads here and in the steam forums specifically saying it doesn't work as well as a people asking steam to add this feature.

Also just for fun I tried it again right now and yup, it still doesn't work. If you own the game it says you own it and offers to install it. If you don't own it, it adds it to your library. There is no way to check if a key is unused unless you don't have the game and then when you check if it is unused it'll use it so there isn't really anyway to check at all.

That doesn't always work. I bought Saints Row 2 in Steam, then managed to register the CD key a few months later, because I had forgotten I already owned the game. I had to contact Steam and get the CD key un-redeemed.

If they are from bundles, you can't create a giveaway for em, unless the entire bundle is unused. Just the rules.

You can however post them here on the forum.

If they are from a site like amazon, then you can give them out. those are fine.

Only way is to write to Steam Support, they can tell you but not sure if they will be happy to do so many ;)

Also read what Gramis commented here.

Also if you write to Steam Support, be sure to ask them if it's possible before you send them any keys.

You can tell if a key has been used by just USING IT. But if you don't want it you can cancel the download and it'll count as unused.

I suppose not, but you probably should close this thread, since it's already 5 months old and nobody has an idea how to know if it's used.
