You almost nailed it! Age of Mythology is a must play!
Free I know about 0a.d. pretty good for a free game.

All excellent suggestions. You might also try Supreme Commander 2, a beer & pretzels RTS.
For something different, you could try Empire Earth Gold (1 or 2), C&C Generals, Settlers 2 Gold, Seven Kingdoms, Dark Reign, and Battle Realms. Those are all classics, and there hasn't really been anything to replace any of them. (A few have had sequels, but it's difficult to improve a classic.)
I also like the Dawn of War 40K series, but I dunno if that's everyone's cup of tea.

Dota 2 or Awesomenauts (extremely fun with friends).

While I agree that the gameplay style of MOBA and "plain" RTS games have similarities, I don't think you fully understand what the concept of a MOBA and a "plain" RTS game is.
RTS is a STRATEGY-BASED (Do you really think that strategy is a must in a MOBA in order to win?), MOBA is a "Get fed and pwn-based" game. That means that you win even if you don't use any strategy. To be honest, every single game requires strategy, but an RTS game differs on the fact that you HAVE to use strategy, even when playing with bots. Also, a Real-Time game is a game that is not turn-based game (Like Total War). So MOBAs are Real-Time games, just not Strategy games.

It is clear that you are unfamiliar with MOBA's at the pro-gamer level. If you don't have both strategy and tactics nailed down, there is no way you will win. It is not uncommon for the "winning team" to lose due to strategy and tactics.

ARTS are to RTS what RTS is to the genre Strategy. Think of it geographically. Pretend RTS is a continent. ARTS would be a country in that continent. Its really not that difficult - I'm assuming there is some sort of language barrier here.

From steam games, Settlers 7 is decent, though not the best multiplayer. Age of Empires as well, which you can get pretty cheap.
As for non-steam, I've been missing Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth (1 or 2, though multiplayer servers were shutdown awhile ago. But both have great singleplayer).

SPACE RTS: Homeworld 2, Star wolves 3, Sin of the solar empire rebellion 2
Regular RTS: C&C (any version), Supreme Commander 2, Total war (any version)

You can't go wrong with Starcraft. :V
There's a free trial version on the Blizzard site, too, I think. You could try it out and see if it's your cup of tea.

+1, and they're making just about everything except campaign and ranked play free when their next big patch comes out, so it's definitely worth trying in my opinion.

You can't go wrong with Command & Conquer!
The First 3 games was released free by EA several years ago. I certainly enjoy them.
I would recommend C&C: Tiberian Sun:

Maybe you'll have to use a speed fix, but aside from that, everything but online multiplayer works. (Campaign is all that matters!)

This.
Looking for RTS games. Everything up until Generals was good.
Starcraft comes in at a close second. Could never really get into the story though.

I played a similar game to this when I was a kid, but you couldn't build structures and units - you only had a Sergeant which was controlled by lmb and shift and a couple of soldiers with different roles who were followind your character. I remember that you could send them into vehicles and boats and your character had 6 inventory slots: with these you could change your weapons from healing kits and mine detectors to rifles and even artilery (or magnifying glass). Do you happen to know this game? :D

I really like Men of War, the first one. It's really hard, and doesn't even have a proper tutorial, but it's awesome, you can even control every single unit directly.
It's also on a bundle for 3 euros atm http://www.bundlestars.com/all-bundles/wars-of-ages-bundle/

Company of Heroes, RA2 and AoE2 are my 3 favorites. Followed up by RISE OF NATIONS (STEAM PUT THIS ONE UP WILL YA!!)
