RTS games you recommend?

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge, Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, Company of Heroes, and The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II: The Rise of the Witch-king. Maybe Empire Earth as well.

Dota 2 or Awesomenauts (extremely fun with friends).

From steam games, Settlers 7 is decent, though not the best multiplayer. Age of Empires as well, which you can get pretty cheap.

As for non-steam, I've been missing Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth (1 or 2, though multiplayer servers were shutdown awhile ago. But both have great singleplayer).

SPACE RTS: Homeworld 2, Star wolves 3, Sin of the solar empire rebellion 2

Regular RTS: C&C (any version), Supreme Commander 2, Total war (any version)

Starcraft 2

You can't go wrong with Starcraft. :V
There's a free trial version on the Blizzard site, too, I think. You could try it out and see if it's your cup of tea.

You can't go wrong with Command & Conquer!
The First 3 games was released free by EA several years ago. I certainly enjoy them.

Maybe you'll have to use a speed fix, but aside from that, everything but online multiplayer works. (Campaign is all that matters!)

Age of Mythology (with or without Titans expansion pack), C&C Generals with Zero Hour expansion pack, Warcraft 3 and it's Frozen Throne expansion, LoTR Battle for Middle-Earth II, Total War games (the ones I recommend are Rome, Medieval II and Shogun 2).

Heroes of Annihilated Empires. A little-known but very rare and great mix RTS / RPG.

Starcraft and Starcraft 2. That's about it.

Spellforce 1&2, Warcraft 3, Starcraft 1&2, Command and Conquer games (avoid tiberian twilight). I hate AoE 2, it's the "counter strike" of RTS games.

I really like Men of War, the first one. It's really hard, and doesn't even have a proper tutorial, but it's awesome, you can even control every single unit directly.

Company of Heroes, RA2 and AoE2 are my 3 favorites. Followed up by RISE OF NATIONS (STEAM PUT THIS ONE UP WILL YA!!)

I kind of suck at RTS games, but I love Company of Heroes, and its usually found for trade for dirt cheap (because of the bundle).
