I've always wondered if counters like that are genuinely giving a realistic representation of the current status or of the counter is just a flash animation that's giving a rough estimate of how quickly the number is increasing, based on prior stats. I mean, wouldn't it be an excessive use of bandwidth or processing power to be querying the database every single second (or even less than that) just to update some damn counter?

According to the JavaScript source, it queries the database every thirty seconds, calculates the rate of change, and then flips numbers at the newly-updated rate. [edit] Numbers are flipped at most once every half-second, so sometimes you'll see it skip numbers if the rate is high. [/edit]
So no, it's not 100% correct all the time, but it's a reasonably accurate guess.
[bonus edit!] (The animation is done with a JavaScript/CSS library called Scriptaculous -- basically decreases/increases the height of the top and bottom halves of the images using Effect.Morph and also switches some visibility to make it look right.) [/bonus edit!]

Gabe Newell likes Ponies or Torchwood is my guess.

I don't know what happened, but Valve seem to have really increased their focus on Steam lately.
In a very short amount of time, we got or will get: Steam Workshop, a revamped Steam Community, Steam Greenlight and (hopefully very soon) Steam on Linux.
I don't know about you, but Valve hadn't accustomed me to so many big announcements in so little time. I am not complaining of course, but I just find it curious.
It's as if they had been scared by Origin.

Well no, there must be another reason. :p

They should update the messaging area also...I would like the option to appear hidden Online but still be able to message(invite to game) certain people. Also the option to send files(Photos and such), even Raptr has this function in the IM client.
Of course none of this is a big deal, I just feel its lacking, the update looks nice so far, looking forward to it...

We ALL have Steam. Aren't their ads enough without everyone making a thread?

I like the idea of every game getting their own hubs. This way unpopular games with small commuinties can easily keep in touch with each other.

Group updates:
The revamped groups layout makes it easier to see what a group is really about, who’s in it, and what they’ve been up to recently. We’ve added a group overview, friend showcase, and more.
Most significantly, each group will now have their own discussions area, enabling public and private discussions within the group. You get complete moderator control over your group forums, with the ability to create sub-forums, add moderators, delete posts, etc.
Each group can now proudly list their favorite games for others to find. You can also set the default language for the group.
