"Where do people get so many steam games?"
From the internet.
"How do they do it"
With money.
Thank you for calling customer service. Come again.

Mine too, sales and bundles. It's strange tho how different services give you very different figures. Steam itself says I have 153 games - it may count MW3 free weekend it to it - steamcalculator.com adds up 139 games and Steam community 200 games.
I've lost my count but free-to-play games are a bit on the grayzone and invites and free weekends are just boosting the community figures.

Almost all of my games come from various indie bundles or steam collections. My first actual purchase on Steam was the Eidos pack while it was on sale. I got over 20 games for just $50.

For me it's sales, mostly. Matter of how long you've been there, too. I have about the same number of physical games, too, which I've collected over the years.
How much does it cost? I don't have the full figures available now, but IIRC last year the average game buying price for me was around $2. It was more than that in previous years.

Some people spend hundreds of dollars on clothes, I spend them on games and wear the same thing every day.

and you turn your knikers inside out every now and then...

I get my video games with money. Such a strange concept.

I can't speak for everyone, but here is how I do it.
Simple Steps for Winning at Steam!™
1) Never. Never. NEVER buy anything at full price. All prices go down and Steam has sales constantly. Unless it has some multiplayer component that you actually intend to play with other people there is no real reason to get a game at full price. You will save money in the long run, and single player campaigns are better the longer you wait anyways (patches, mods, etc)
2) Only buy games on sale. Steam has a sale a day and at least two extra sales per week now (midweek, weekend). But the big time to buy is the Summer and Winter sales! During these sales practically the whole store has some kind of discount. Take advantage of these big sales by saving money up for them. You can easily get about 20 games you will enjoy for about $60-70 in one fell swoop. A much better deal than day one-ing Kingdoms of Amalur:The Generic Fantasying
3) Do not buy anything that isn't games! Cable? Who needs it! A lot of TV shows can be seen online, LEGALLY! Also there is Netflix which is like $8 a month and it is on demand watching. Why let some cable company fat cats tell you when you can and cannot watch a show? All you really need is the internet and some vidya games, and you have infinite entertainment!
4) Let everyone who does buy you gifts know that you enjoy getting Steam games and/or money. My girlfriend got me Skyrim for Christmas, and I've gotten quite a few other gifts and/or money from others as well.
5) Buy indie bundles. Even if you only end up liking one of the games in the bundle, you can essentially get 5 or more indie games for the price of one! If you are a complete cheapskate maybe even cheaper than that! Only a fool would pass up The Ball, Sideway, Xotic, BEEP, Nikopol, and Wasteland Angel for mere dollars. Who knows, you may even find that you enjoy one or more of them more than you first expected!
6) Find a gaming community and stay active! Even video game blogs have key giveaways from time to time. Sometimes devs give out keys as a promotion for their game. If you stay involved and keep an eye out you may be able to pick up a free game here or there. I managed to win Saints Row the Third for free by participating in a contest in a stream mere days after SR3 came out!
I could come up with more if I tried maybe but this should be enough to give you a glimpse into the sad friendless existence that I lead. Actually maybe I should write a book... :P
I know I've already written far too much in reply to your thread, but I'd also like to say that over 100 games is really not THAT big of a deal. Steam has been around for years now, and if its your main store to buy games from/on (it is mine), then after some years you're bound to have quite a collection.

I've got no idea how anyone can get so many games. It's crazy. I've only got 4 games right now.

Nobody has over a hundred wins.
OP is talking about games that are bought.

Go to Steam, click add a game. Randomly input a 15 combination of letters and numbers until you activate a game.
