You can get a lot more bang for your buck for half the price if you build you own PC. Its not that hard and will give you more power for much less money.

I was going to say this. With a $1500 budget, you can make a really nice desktop.

You need an SSD in every new system. The HDD-to-SSD upgrade is the absolute, number one upgrade that a user will completely notice in everyday usage.
Those big chassis can hold multiple drives, so you can still have your HDD for storage, but you must put an SSD in your machine or you will be wasting your money.

It's not a must have thing but it's definitely one of the things everyone should think about. But you can always get WD Black HDD that has SSD (integrated?) (not sure how it's in English). That would be best choice if you don't wanna spend double by twice the amount (I hope someone gets this reference) of money for hard drives.

If your machine only has one 2.5" bay and no mSATA slot, then a hybrid drive like those Black or Momentus XT drives are a decent option for a gaming machine that needs a lot of local storage.
However, in a large machine like this one, there are almost certainly multiple 2.5" bays so there is no reason not to use a dedicated SSD along with a storage HDD. You are seriously underestimating the day-to-day impact of an SSD. They won't get your frame rates any higher (although map load times improve!), but they will help you do everything else faster. If mangeshvt is going to do anything else with his gaming laptop, he will be very very happy if he puts an SSD in it.

128GB SSDs cost less than $100. Considering the tremendous tangible performance boost, I think it's an upgrade that should definitely be within the budget of a $1500 machine.

For desktops definitely but for laptops (especially gaming ones) it might be better to not get SSD but get better GPU since for laptops GPU's are weaker than for desktops anyway. But as I said - he can get it if he wants. I'm just giving my opinion. I'm not against SSD's and I think they are things people will use in future and that are really useful but that they are not 'must have' things.

You will feel difference in every program and game. Of course, you won't get fps boost but loading times will be much better. And if you put your OS on SSD then you will see how fast it works too. It's worth it - trust me. I have an SSD myself.

Well, that's why I suggested hybrid one too. But since you are not him - how do you know if he needs it? We are just giving our advice - why not get SSD or hybrid drive if he could put games he will play the most on it and get better loading speeds?
Comment has been collapsed.
No one uses their computer just for gaming. Does he browse the web? Use an office suite? Does he do anything that involves any loading?
Comment has been collapsed.
I didn't say he must get SSD more than anything else. Did I say that anywhere? No. I suggested he needs faster HDD and the best would be SSD + HDD or hybrid one. But from you I don't see anything else than random bullshit without any actual suggestions what he should get!

Not talkin bout you, m8. Wer're still commenting on that SSD-Zealot above.
I'd suggest he'd get a normal gaming rig and some office laptop for his school time. That'd be like 500 for the laptop and the same for the PC, don't know your prices, but here in Europe that would be quite acceptable for a 3 years span.
Comment has been collapsed.
In euros maybe you can get gaming rig for 500 but in dollars definitely will need more. I'm in Europe too but can't get gaming rig for 500. And as I said in one of the newest post replies - maybe he lives in his school and gets home only in weekends - then laptop is much better choice.

Well, off a 1.5k budget in dollars I'm sure he'd find a good combo. I just don't see a valid reason to spend so much money on almost nothing. If he lives in school, how much spare time can he have to spend on gaming? Seems like a short thought to me.

FYI I'm into video game design school, and I'm supposed to get a laptop because we work anytime & anywhere in the campus -classrooms,cafeterias,factories etc.

Yes, for artistic professionals, the cost is a little harder to swallow, but the benefit is still there. Moving around large assets in a short amount of time makes you more productive, but you need a hefty SSD to store all of that data. Typical users can get away with 128GB boot drives, but you need an SSD in your data drive as well.
I admit that it's a much harder decision to plunk down $400 on a 500GB storage SSD and I can no longer say that you "must" use an SSD in this situation. Good Luck mangeshvt.

Have you ever used a machine with an SSD?
One second is a relatively large lag in user interfaces. I can't expect you to understand unless you've been trained in this stuff or experienced an SSD firsthand. Graphs telling you that SSDs are orders of magnitude quicker than HDDs are good and all, but many people don't deal with measurable evidence well. You have to experience it.
And we aren't talking about "loads of money" either. Very good 128GB SSDs are less than $100 without the need for weird sales or anything.

For low-grade sht thats gonna break fast enough.
Go tell him about limited write cycles, trim and the poor chips most SSDs use until now. You don't get anything useful in that price range, plus 128 GB is a joke. More than half full, SSDs get utterly slow and 64 Gigs is laughable at best.
Unless you find something at least 512 GB there's no need for home users to spend money on an SSD if there's anything else to be improved in their system. If you machine got _sooooo much__ faster, you might think about not cluttering it with bloatware and vendor shareware crap. End.

For less than $100, you can add a 128GB SSD to your machine and you will immediately notice a tangible difference in day-to-day usage. Every moment when your machine is "loading" anything disappears. It's a tremendous upgrade that more people should know about.

But that's normal to ask such a thing because you can get more power for less money if you build stacionary PC. But there are other factors that make people want to buy laptop (not enough space in home, maybe he moves around a lot, maybe he needs it in school too etc.). But it's ok if you ask in a polite way, IMO.

Sager is awesome! XoticPC is a good dealer for them, or go direct. Whatever you do, replace the thermal paste, upgrade it! If you can, the wireless as well. And you are going to need an OS... Personally I think 17 is too big if you ever want to move it.

hey thanks a lot..I'm thinking the same actually!! anyways I'm not gonna use it for more than 3 years!!
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes..that's the reason!! I'd prefer desktops otherwise :)

I didn't mean that they break after 3 years (I have my HP Compaq for about 5 or 6 years now). But I guess I didn't write it correctly. I mean - they haven't got that powerful parts and upgrade options. Maybe those gaming ones have better chance to be able to run everything for 5 or 6 years but my Compaq is getting slower and slower year after year because software (even internet browsers) are getting more demanding.

That's a really weak GPU, and there's a good reason so many people go "omggaminglaptop? lolz". You could order a desktop that's twice as powerful as your build for under $1,000. Build it yourself (it's seriously more easy than it sounds) and you could get the parts for $800.

It's still a better (cheaper) option to buy a laptop for school and a desktop for home gaming.

That ASUS laptop has a cheaper GPU. At 1080p, you're definitely going to notice the difference between the 660M and the 675MX.
If you think you can deal with a 660M, why not try out this machine?
15" 1080p same CPU, same RAM prices, 670MX, +$145 128GB mSATA SSD
I would highly suggest adding the 128GB mSATA SSD for $145. That brings the price up to $1264. You can upgrade to a 1000GB storage HDD for $30 and 16GB of RAM for $50 and still be below $1500.
So while the 670MX is slightly less capable than the 675MX, I think it's worth coming in well under budget.

"I will be using this laptop for maximum 3 years"
No... you won't :/ there's a reason people generally shy away from gaming laptops
high performance components that generate a lot of heat in a confined case = bad. You want airflow. Plus you can't upgrade it and if you truly want portability, they are power hungry.
There is no reason to get a gaming laptop.

You talk out of your ass a lot apparently go and research Sager Laptops before typing. Yes you can upgrade the GPU on Sager laptops. This specific laptop has two vents at the back with one being for the GPU and another for CPU. As well the air flow is fucking amazing I have it and it's perfect.

do whatever the hell you have to do to get Windows 7 instead of Windows 8.
Also, if it saves you money, you don't need Office 2010 because LibreOffice is an amazing alternative that can save in Office format.
That HDD also seems pretty slow... You might notice some more significant loading times w/ 5400 rpm sata2.
But yeah, the best decision for gaming would really just be a desktop, sorry to say.
