Okay so I am running windows XP on my computer for 4 years. Windows Vista was available at the time but I took XP instead. I really want to play Assassin's Creed 3 though so it's time to upgrade my OS from XP 32 bit to windows 7 so I can play AC3 and JC2 yeye!

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz

4 GB RAM (3.25 GB Useable)

Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 768 MB

Windows XP Professional SP3 - 32 BIT

So the question is... Do I get Windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit and which version of Windows 7. Also how do I even install Windows 7? I'm decent with computers but I'm a n00b at formatting HDD's and upgrading OS's and shiiii~

Thanks for the help!

32bits won't handle more than 3GB of ram.

Thanks. I've seen these before and tried the advisor. I just wanted input on what I should do from the community.

You burn it to a DVD, put it into your DVD Drive and follow the prompts. Windows 7 has the most user friendly installer.

Keep in mind you'll lose everything on the HDD you format.

Back up files to a secondary drive, hopefully you have one. Then restart the computer with a Win 7 disc and it does the rest! Win 7 doesn't upgrade from XP, so it's a totally fresh install. Do 64-bit, no reason not to.

I have a 2 TB External hard drive. I heard there's a program Microsoft easy transfer that can help move files from computer to hard drive then back again. But will my 32 bit programs work on 64 bit? Thanks

Say there is an error during the installation..

what happens? Also, I want to get it soon so I can play during my month break from uni but I won't get a free serial key for win 7 till January. What can do, is there a trial or something if I can't get it... you know? SO YE!

It formats before it installs, so if there is an error during installation, you have nothing.

You have 30 days to activate after installing Windows 7, no need to do it immediately.

You could also just install Win 7 on a different partition and then copy the files you need from XP to 7.

Some people don't like splitting their HDD into numerous partitions. Chances are he'd experience an issue with the MBR which would prevent him from booting to Windows XP regardless without readding the entry.

He's already stated he has an external to backup to, so that'd be the smarter choice.

Windows 7 Ultimate 192 GB

Windows 7 Enterprise 192 GB

Windows 7 Professional 192 GB

Windows 7 Home Premium 16 GB - this is the one you want

Windows 7 Home Basic 8 GB

+1

But I think you can only upgrade to the 32bit version from XP.

You might want to check out the preview version before buying tho. Personaly I went back to 7 after 2h of trying to like 8.

Yeah, when he uses Win 7 then he wouldn't need to upgrade but he uses XP and there it is the best when he upgrades to Win 8.

Still, Win8 has no real advantages over 7 and not everyone's gonna like the new UI.

Yeah, but Win 8 has some other improvements and only costs $40 to upgrade.

That's a bit short sighted. It may not have those right now, but its the O.S. that will see longer support from the currently available ones. Since he has no special needs, win8 might be his thing.

Buy Windows 8 it's cheap and it has better terms of OEM license.
64-bit of course.

I have Win 7 Pro with 18gb of memory.... I have had no issues running any games yet.
Except for the real old ones, which had same problems on XP.

I reccomend doing 64 bit because 64 bit operating systems are prefferd for systems with 4gb or more, 64 bit will be faster for u
