I just tried buying a bundle without having choice for the first time (I've bought bundles before but only when I had an active or paused membership) and got a verify phone number email and now they're reviewing my payment. I've talked to others and noticed that people without a membership are the ones who get that verifying payment option.

Just wanted to take a poll to see if it was a coincidence or pattern.

Edit: mainly talking about "manual review" as verification, it's more common to start to require phone numbers.

I'm not an active Choice subscriber (I have bought 2 or 3 months in the past 2 years), but even then every single order including the ones for the Choices I'd make would need to be verified.

I'm a subscriber on a classic month-to-month plan since 2016, which I pause / unpause regularly. I have never over the years gotten a payment review when buying anything from Humble, be it a game, a game bundle or any other kind of bundle.

Never had to verify any purchase at Humble but I've been a member since their very first Indie Bundle and constantly subscribe.

I've never had to verify a purchase or have gotten a payment review. Then again I don't typically buy the bundles or choices.
Last one was that sonic bundle in a moment of weakness remembering my childhood games, before THAT was the June 2021 monthly choice.

Interesting. I first bought stuff on Humble Bundle back in 2013 and I haven't had issues with verification until 2020. Of course I've been more infrequent over the years.

I'm more interested that people are getting phone verifications, is that a two step process people opt into? I've never had to verify anything, I click, I buy, I get keys.

I had to set my phone number, get a verification code, and now i've been waiting 2 hours for "manual processing".

Did you get a email or a pop up saying it was necessary? I wonder if this is a new thing...

It basically said they needed more info to verify me and that they needed my phone number.

I never opted into it. I'd place my order, then I'd get a follow-up email saying more information is needed (in this case my phone number to receive a code), I enter the code, and then I have to wait a day for "accuracy" reasons.

That sounds odd. I wonder why Some people need verification and others don't? Account age? I've had mine since 2016.

I've had mine since 2013, lol. I'm really not quite sure, at this point I'd believe HB just flips a coin or spins a wheel to determine who needs to do what.

I'm an active Choice subscriber, and always get that mobile verification, everytime I buy a Choice or buying a normal bundle.

Just clarifying, I was talking about being put under "manual review", not just a phone verification.

Never had to send them any additional information. Than again, their bundles have been downright awful for a while now, so maybe something's changed since I stopped being their regular customer.

good, its annoying for sure, but this means that they have a team that combs through transactions making sure that accounts aren't hacked into

It's not about "protection" against hacks, it's about being a pain in the ass to users.

Out of nowhere (same IP for at least a year, same verified PayPal account since I ever started using HB, around 2012-2013 I guess?), they put a payment on manual review once. The first one went through. The second, maybe a week later, was never accepted. I still had access to all my keys and to my pre-paid, ongoing choice subscription. So again this has nothing to do with security, as if I had been hacked the hacker would have had access to all my keys and even a bunch of "future" orders (the prepaid monthly months).

In the end, I had to create a brand new HB account and pay via card... Stellar user experience, would recommend -100/10

A week later is unacceptable for a manual review. 3days tops. And like you said, if you're using the same up, payment method, device etc it shouldn't be in their review in the first place.

HB are pretty opaque about why they do things like this, but I at partly understand why. If they go out and state "we might flag you if you do x, y, z, etc", they would create a roadmap for people who ARE trying scam them on how not to get caught. It's a bit of a double-edged sword, because it leaves people who run into these checks innocently confused and frustrated. It sucks, but there are good reasons from them not to share details.

Here a few things that MIGHT trigger them to verify:

  • using vpn
  • using the same payment method or contact info on multiple accounts (including old accounts that you shut down or forgot about)
  • sharing an IP address with someone else who also buys from HB (family member, roommate, etc)
  • recently or frequently changing your contact info or payment method
  • your location/region data not matching the country tied to your IP, payment info, etc
  • previous declined transactions or chargebacks w/HB
  • some part of your contact/payment info being previously involved in fraud/id theft (not necessarily that YOU were the scammer, but that someone else got caught using info related to you)

I'm sure there are plenty of other factors. These are just some common examples. Whatever the case, I hope you get things resolved soon!

It's just weird bc I bought something a month ago after I moved to a different state in August and never got it but now they do. Oh well.

I've never subscribed and in my 38 bundle purchases in the past 2.5 years I've never had to verify anything.

I've been "manual review"ed on 5 out of the 6 bundles I've bought through HB lately. Not sure why myself. Active subscriber and been a member for years. Probably doesn't like my IP address.

There was a period when I had choice and got payment review for every single bundle order, and my payment for store order keeps failing.

Has anyone independently confirmed from Humble that these requests are genuine and not some man in the middle shenanigans?

A friend of mine and I decided to get the same bundle on the same day. None of us were active subscribers. He was asked to verify while I wasn't.
However, when I bought another bundle a few months later, my payment was reviewed.
So, no idea how it works.

Humble Choice sub here, vaguely remember sometime last year (last months) had 1-2 bundle reviews and nothing until now.

Two days ago, I bought a bundle and received a phone verification that went into review right after the completed phone check. The 1st bundle took multiple hours to clear, the 2nd bundle after that was cleared in 30 min but the 3rd and 4th bundle I ordered yesterday are pending, quite a hassle.

I left my vpn on once, a month or two ago and got a manual verification when trying to buy a $1 bundle. Haven't bought any other bundle since then so can't tell if it'll pop up again. From what I see, certain bundles are also more sensitive, like the Paradox bundles or SEGA bundles. It may or may not be a coincidence, don't quote me on it.
