Not sure this is unknown, however Awesomenauts is an awesome indie title.

If only I could stay connected to a match for more than thirty seconds.

Alien Swarm (not indie, but free)
Cubemen (competitive tower defense)
Multiwinia (I haven't played it in a while, so it might be empty)
Plain Sight (fun, movement-based game, but for me it didn't have that much to make me come back. Also same comment as above)
Awesomenauts (2d sidescrolling MOBA)
And this brings me to two of my favorite games:
Shattered Horizon. (It's set in space. And it's well done, realistic--but still fun--space) Unfortunately, it is basically empty. They recently(ish) added bots, but I would recommend it only if you have friends who have or are going to buy it.
Frozen Synapse (Buy this. Look at some reviews if you need, and then just do it.)

^ Alien Swarm is really fun with friends. It's at its absolute best when you have three friends and yourself in the same room or connected via Skype. That way you can communicate with your teammates quickly and you all get to hone your teamwork skills!!

I'm right there with ya. A group of friends love it, played every facet of it on the highest difficulties and maxed out their reputation, but even when my game was working (would repeatedly break entirely, needing a re-install) I never got into it.

Not the worst one, but I regret a little bit buying it. Scenery and setting are fine, but everything else like the perk-system, the locked weapons, the feel of the guns, aiming and the missions is quite bad.
Some of the missions are extremely short and except for getting from one point to another there isn't much diversity in them. It definately needs community maps, but I haven't seen any. Instead they sell some as DLC.

Competitive or cooperative? Awesomenauts is good for competitive, Killing Floor for cooperative.

+1, I haven't really found anyone yet for online, but the story line is god-like

+1, its a great game; unfortunately, there is usually only one populated server and its never full (at least when I play). More people should play considering it was free...

castle crashers? it's indie and multiplayer and mad fun

it doesn't have much hype on pc from what I've noticed, so I would consider it so, it's really meant for multiplayer and the problem is a lot of people try to solo it so everyone makes it look bad

Good port and gamepad required don't go together.

Even with the srv list. You still have to wait sometimes :P for more people (=> more fun).
Nope. I have 8-9 years of DotA 1 :) & 2-3 Heroes of Newerth & League of legends ( zero days Demigod tough)
And i thot biggest noobs in gaming are brazilians followed by turks ( tough turks are nice in real life, well, most of them) and by that i mean all gaming not just moba gametype.
Since DotA 2 :) i really really really hate most of the russians who think they're pro but they arent.Sorry to say that.I did have one very pro russian friend and one ukrainean, but most of them suck in dota 2 for example. And most of them only speak in @!$%@!$ chirilic fonts, they don't know english aparently or don't wanna write it. -.- . If you are pro and you know english at least partially than ofc we can play :D

Not nearly as fun as solo, but pretty good with a friend.

Terrible lag always...really bad net code and no dedicated servers last I checked.
Comment has been collapsed.
Spent 14,99€ on it,played 40 minutes before it went f2p because of the lag. Devs are idiots.
Comment has been collapsed.
There is lag when the game forcibly choose you as host, it's the shittiest part of the game : p2p hosting sucks but I play it for free so I can't complain too much :x
About netcode, I don't know, I live on a island and in all games, the min ping is 230, most of the time I can deal with it and GCI is one of the rare game where I don't see much the impact of my ping.

Altitude , Awesomenauts and Super MNC .
Super MNC is free. Its a like a dota game where its more important to let your creeps push then to kill enemy team.
Awesomenauts is similar while killing enemy team is nice pushing creeps to turrets is the whole secret to wining the game. Also its sidescroller and 3v3 its quite fun and cheap game.
Altitude is 2d plane shooter game with Ball and Base Destroy game types. It doest have a huge playerbase mostly 100 people or so at primetimes for europe. Not sure about USA.Ball game type is like soccer/football like game where you pass the ball and try to shoot it to others teams goal.Base destry is carring a bomb from your base or snatching one from the middle of the map and deploying it to destroy enemy base vehicle thing.

I love indie games, but I feel that I'm missing out on the whole reason for gaming online.
What are some less known, yet populated multiplayer games?
