I was going through my game list this morning and I noticed I had Portal under my games (after selecting All Games). It was never there before today and I did not buy Portal 2 when it came out, so I am not sure how I got this. All I could think of is it had something to do with Valve day 12.12.12 but I am confused and not sure, since my son did not get a copy.

Portal or Portal 2? At one point you said Portal and another point you said Portal 2.

"I noticed I had Portal under my games"

"I did not buy Portal 2 when it came out" [was told you got Portal with purchase of Portal 2]

You were told wrong. If this were true there wouldn't be a "Portal + Portal 2" bundle.

Most likely with the prepurchase only

I agree. I know for as long as I have had my account, I have not bought Portal, but I have always wanted too.

Does it ask you to purchase it or does it have the word play?

It says play. I have already played and beat the main story today.

Steam is testing games on Linux. My friend received with Steam Linux Beta free Serious Sam 3 and Portal.

I got Half Life 2 Episodes 1, 2, and Lost Coast for free when I bought Half Life: Source and Half Life 2. Is that a weird or does Steam give them free to everyone who buys the two Half Life games?

When someone gifted me HL:Op. Force I had an icon(greyed) for the main game appear in my game library asking me to install/buy it. Not the same thing....just an aside.

BTW i'm amazed you told us/anyone about it.....I don't know if many would say they got a game for free(If that's what happened.) if it happened.

I was worried about my account. I had checked everything but I guess I got it with the Steam for Linux beta.

They have given Portal away for free for various reasons in the past...

I'm honestly surprised there are people out there that don't own Portal. The game is ancient, Valve probably did a secret gift-away or felt sorry for certain people. Whatever the answer, it's not surprising.

I would recommend checking your account history :P
I find games that I don't remember buying all the time. "specially that lately I've been going crazy buying games + the last sale"
and yet there they are in my history and I bought them at some point for some reason
