Only 8 months ago I got my first gaming pc. When I build it I did choice to install Windows 7 64 on it instead of Windows 8 because it supossed to be better for gaming. (I read this on several forums so just believed it). Now Windows is offering a free update to 10 should I do it or not? I do have quite a few old/older games as I like them. Will my pc and my games still work properly if I update?

Windows 10 is great. I've been using it for a while now. You should upgrade, if you want to wait sure, but make sure you upgrade in the first year for free.

Is W10 ready for my pc?

1gb of ram
1.60ghz
64mb of video

My specs are so OP that I dont think Windows 10 will handle it

If that CPU is a newer low-end laptop Celeron, and the RAM is DDR3, it should actually be just enough to run it. I'm runnin W8.1 smooth on a 1.4 GHz new Celeron and apart from updates, the normal idle CPU use is under 5%.

DDR2 and I dont think that 2008 can be considered as "new". Anyway im happy with XP, runs smooth and without much problems

Unless you really need Windows for some reason, I'd use a lightweight Linux distro on it. Same hardware requirements, but a lot newer kernel and available software. Somethink like Lubuntu, Xubuntu, or my favourite, Bodhi. Or, if you know how to handle Linxu, maybe even some own Puppy distro.

I tried Linux Mint and Ubuntu and I liked both a lot but the main reason I stopped using Linux is because of the programs. Installing them was nightmare and not every program works on Linux without Wine (which used to use all my ram). So I decided to go back a be a Windows pleb again, I wish someone makes a distro that makes this issues easier to understand for newbies and people that is not into programming.

Also, obligatory Gentoo joke

Well, depends on what you use. For example if people use Photoshop, Linux will never be a good alternative. (Or any Adobe product.) But some software can be interchanged easily, for example no matter how good MS Office 2013 became, I still prefer LibreOffice.

Well, seeing as many new games will requite directx12 and only windows 10 will run directx12 you really wont have any choice if you wish to continue playing new games.

The majority of games will still run on non-dx12 machines. Otherwise they'll be ignoring a lot of potential customers.

They tried withholding DirectX upgrades in the past to force upgrades, it didn't work out well and they eventually caved and back ported it as developers won't use a version of DirectX that the vast majority of gamers don't have and people won't upgrade to something they don't like if they don't have to.

I wouldn't do it this year. Let other people work out the inevitable bugs first.

Not yet, but later definitely.
Win7 is great, but it is getting quite old.
DirectX 12, when games will start supporting it, will blow DX11 out of the water like no other DX upgrade before ever.
The hardware reqs are actually a lot lower.
Compatibility, just based on the preview version alone, isn't really a problem.

But all Windows versions start with initial troubles, despite the long beta testing process. Wait until at least Q4, or even up to early next year. Then switch and don't look back. Trust me, once you see the boot process of Win10, especially on an UEFI mobo, you'll never want to experience Win7 boot times ever again.

You have a year to claim the free upgrade, you have plenty of time to learn more about how well it performs. I'd claim the upgrade right away, so I don't forget, then wait to see how it turns out before installing. You have nothing to lose by waiting, but if you upgrade too early then you may run into problems.

The copy is free if you have a legit one,why not get it,and then later if you decide to upgrade you will have it.

You can always try it out and see how you like it,and if you want Direct X12 it will be your only option and might be worth the plunge for that if it turns out DirectX 12 is as good as they claim

It also suppose to pretty much run anything that works on Windows 7 and up,Just because you upgrade to windows 10 does not mean you can not still use windows 7,just reserve the key and install it on another hard drive and see how you like it,once you have the key it is yours forever.

Besides are some point things will stop using older windows and that might effect your use depending on how much you game.Like i said get the key if you do not like it,quit using it and save the key for when you might want to use it.

You could also dual boot windows 7 and Windows 10 but i would just get a cheap hard drive to throw it on or a spare one if you have one if you do not want to fully jump in

Personally, I will probably be waiting a couple of weeks and see how thing goes with those who have upgraded and if any issue pops up and needs to get fixed.

I've already seen issues with nVidia drivers conflicting with Windows update so it might be wise to make sure that whatever hardware you use have their drivers ready in order to avoid some nasty surprises..

What I suggest doing is waiting to see how it's reviewed. You're allowed to wait up to a year after release and still get it free, so that will give you a chance to see if Windows 10 is decent or if it's the next Windows Vista.

From what I read from the comments (and other source (no s)), I think you should hold off. I think you have a year before you have to pay to get the upgrade so just hang on for games to work out their compatibility issues, maybe some changes to whatever privacy stuff, etc. Maybe just wait at least 1-2 months

What's the rush? Windows 7 is a mature OS and it'll continue to be supported for a good number of years to come. Furthermore, it's not unheard of for new Windows releases to be incompatible with older software and hardware. I've found this out the hard way after I installed Windows 8 and my PC would restart every time I did something graphic intensive (though it worked fine in 7), because the OS didn't play nice with the Nvidia card I was using at the time. Unless you're dying to try some of the new features in 10, I would stick with 7.

Come on guys, we always have these concers sinse the very first version of Windows. We had doubts when upgrading from Win 3.1 to Win 95, from Win 95 to Win 98, from Win XP to Win Vista/7, etc. We all will be using Win 10 some day. The only reason not to update asap is to wait while the new system gets its crucial updates/service packs.

Yes, and this is the main reason many of us tell him to postpone switching for some time.

Although as I recall I jumped from XP to Win7 pretty fast. XP even then was starting to become a huge hassle to maintain unless you reinstalled it every 6-9 months.

Thank you all for the answers and tips. I have reserved my free copy just in case and will not install it now. If the only real benefit is directx12 I guess it will take me at least 5 years to get my first game that realy requires it. If I understand correctly from one of the responses it will still work only with a slightly less good grafics. I do not care to much about grafics as I usually play games that are 10, 20 years old, they all have less nice grafics. But still I reserved it in case I hear everybody worship it in the next year. For now I have a good, working system let's keep it that way.

Good choice. Keep yourself updated with it in the next months though. When the proper drivers come out, you may suddenly squeeze out a lot more from that system with Win10 than with Win7.

Windows 10 will (probably) be better than 8.1, which was better than 8. There will be some compatibility issues and some compatibility improvements (more the former) relative to 7, so you might want to wait a while and see if people make comments about it. That said, Windows 10 should have better performance than Windows 7 by a significant margin, though not so significant to make the upgrade a necessity. If 7 works for you, stick with it for a while and decide once there's feedback.

hey guys i bought my pc and it was 8.1.. when i have the free w10 upgrade im thinking on formatting to clean everything up.. doesnt that get me to windows 8 again? can someone help me :/

It depends on how you format it. If, for example, you have a brand laptop, and format it using the partition that the manufacturer reserved for installing winodws, than yes, it will get you back to whatever version was there in the first place. But you really should'nt be doing this, because it will also bring back all the crap they throw there. I had to format a PC with windows 8.1 this weekend, and whoever says it's just like 7, but better is completely insane. But still, windows 8.1 or 10, or anything is better than whichever version bundled with all the adware those companies bundle with them.

Well, in the end you will get "forced" to use it anyway. (directx 12 and all)
As windows doesn't really have a great track record I wouldn't install it right away.
Wait a bit before getting it, untill the first service pack for example so a lot of bugs get worked out because the public will have had a look at it. Then you can find many "normal user" reviews too.
I doubt there will be many more compatibility issues with older games compared to windows 7 or 8. (but this is just a guess). Also, older hardware might be an issue with drivers and such.

So I suggest, just wait a bit before updating, let other people be the guinea pigs(especially if you aren't a "computer geek"). It's not like you are in a hurry. Besides, never change a winning team...
