How much motivation can you still muster?
Good catch, cbones, hadn't seen it yet. Kind of a steep increase, but to be honest not entirely unjustified... the sandbox alone was able to keep many people entertained far above the 100h mark, and the game feels quite unlike other survival-themed titles (at least for me, it's one of the few titles I got a 2nd copy for myself even though I already had it on a family account).
And if Story Mode lives up to expectations, it will generate a lot more engagement. Hopefully there's still a long development roadmap ahead for Hinterland, on this first season.

Original post updated with very relevant details from the FAQ that cbones linked.
The most relevant of which may be that older savegames will become unusable after official launch. Bothersome for anyone that is aiming for the long-run sandbox achievements before diving into the Story Mode.

Is now a good time to feel hyped? :) And to think I had planned productive stuff for this week.
To make matters worse, they just announced that a movie is in the making! Edited the post with a demo short-film that Hinterland created.

tbh, it's one of the very few i've gotten hyped about. but that's because i already got my moneys worth out of several hundred sandbox hours played. ^^
i haven't touched it in ~8-10months though on purpose, so it wouldn't bore me by the release time. even though i've been wanting too. =)
honestly hadn't heard that at all yet. will check it out.
edit:
ahh, i assume you're talking about this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZNbUITN-mA
yeah, that makes me wanna play it even more. =)

Here's hoping for a smooth launch of the first 2 episodes of Story Mode. I'm pretty excited.
I'm a little burned out on Sandbox right now. I feel like I've done all I can with Voyageur, I don't really like wading through knee-deep wolves on Stalker, and Interloper is just a quest for matches because the game has no other firestarting options. Got matches? You live. Can't find matches? You die.
I suppose it's pretty normal to feel burned out after 800 hours of gameplay, though. That's about where I got with Skyrim before I got burned out on that also.
Definitely hoping for continued great things for TLD.

lol, sounds like me almost. except i avoided playing this one for the last ~8-10months, after i hit almost 300hours. so the story mode wouldn't bore me (hopefully). for the last month (almost 2months) i've torn thru just about every somewhat relative game i could come up with waiting... FC4, FO4, JC3, RE:HD, RE0:HD, Skyrim: SE, State of Decay.... but after tomorrow morning hits, i'll probably spend a good couple months in TLD again. =)
(meaning after story mode, i'll go on a long sandbox run)

The TLD countdown has ended, with news and a first trailer! Seems like good stuff is coming.
Here's the trailer (watch out for minor spoilers): Season 1
The final sandbox update before Story Mode is to be expected later this month of May, and it apparently brings numerous exciting new features (so that's a plus)! A fully revamped UI, cartography using campfire charcoal, and more.
And of course, the most antecipated part... the end of Early Access now has a set date: August 1st. On that day, the first two episodes of "Season 1: Wintermute" will become available! Version 1.0 will launch simultaneously for Steam, Xbox and Playstation.
Full announcement over here.
EDIT: cbones provided a link to Hinterland's updated FAQ. It contains some very pertinent information. Price update to $34.99, and older sandbox saves become incompatible upon official launch.
EDIT 2: The long-awaited day is finally upon us! The Story mode launches on August 1st. Plus, it is preceded by an awesome news by Hinterland: "Today, we announced that a feature film adaptation of The Long Dark is in development with the producer of the Resident Evil films. The script will be written by Raphael van Lierop, writer and director of the game."
A movie is in the making, with the enlisted guidance of experts in storytelling and grim ambients! In a hype-inducing move, they even created a short-film called ELEGY, as a demonstration of what is to come: Elegy
