Valve should insist that users have at least 1 paid for game in their accounts before being able to initiate adding friends/chatting.
That would solve a lot of this.
Whenever a user with a private profile adds me, I check whether they are on Steamgifts (via Enhanced Steam) and, if they aren't, block them.

i got him, his email + login etc...

I just block any friend requests that are level 5 or less.
Even my alt is level 6 and I only use that to farm cards from spare games. People with a less active account than that are likely throwaways or alts and I can't be bothered.

Could also just be a lightly used account with free to play games.

Could be, but I'll take that risk. I used to accept every friend request but 99/100 accounts that are Level 5 or below are just spam bots.

Follow the simple rule of if a profile is private, don't trade with it. If the person genuinely wants a trade, they will not be steam level 0 and should allow their inventory to be visible by friends.
Screenshots in trade are stupid and unnecessary. Always verify the trade by checking the inventory. Don't ever click a trade-related screenshot link in steam chat.

Just encountered a new type of scam/phishing attempt as well.
Was invited to a Steam group that claimed to be for giveaways but every link posted in it was to the typical .scr download. Sad thing is there was close to 60 people in the group in a little over 20 minutes, I have a feeling a couple people will fall victim.

I tend to block anyone who doesn't use a name. "Dude" and "Hey" aren't names. Then they need to tell me how they know me, and I don't have a facebook.

Thank you for the warning <3 I was wondering why I got a couple random 'private' profile level 0 requests when I barely have any friends...

Just got randomly added by this guy: http://steamcommunity.com/id/amirobro
who attempted the same thing.
Me: Hello there
amirobro: Hi, me need this item
amirobro: [phising link removed]
amirobro: You trading item ?
Me: I don't play dota
amirobro: Hi, me need this item
amirobro: [phising link removed]
amirobro: You trading item ?
Me: write the item name here
Me: write the item name please
Edit: "dota2screen" was contained in the phising url

Just a recommendation for something I use frequently, whenever I see a suspicious link I run it in:
https://www.virustotal.com/
And this site uses ALL the major virus engine to scan the link (or file if you want) and give you a result of its safety.

There is a bunch of new scam bots going around by some Russian douchebag or something, The bot adds you as a friend (like all the others do) and then says something along the lines of:
Hi bro, I've seen you traded on steam market, you don't wanna trade on this thing?
somebullshitlink.com/shit.jpg
Example:
http://s25.postimg.org/jfrq8yfn3/screenshot_82.png
The link they send is NOT an image, It is an exe file that has had an .htaccess urlrewrite to make the extension .jpg
After visiting the homepage of the "website", I saw this:

If you get any messages like this from random people who add you, Block and report them. Don't try to trade with them.
