Xbox GamePass built for PC

"We will continue to add to the more than 20 Xbox Game Studios titles on Steam, starting with Gears 5 and all Age of Empires I, II & III: Definitive Editions. We know millions of PC gamers trust Steam as a great source to buy PC games and we’ve heard the feedback that PC gamers would like choice. We also know that there are other stores on PC, and we are working to enable more choice in which store you can find our Xbox Game Studios titles in the future."

For now, though they said something about evaluating other stores, so it may be a possibility in the future.

Epic's mega sale shows that they want control over game prices. That got three games temporarily pulled from the store because those devs/publishers wanted to keep control over pricing and likely pissed off a lot more. That's the kind of thing that would make people wary about releasing their games on Epic.

Or maybe Epic doesn't want them. One big advantage the Epic store has right now for indie games is that there aren't many games in it. So those that do get onto the store have much higher visibility. Which means Epic has to be selective about which games it takes, as they lose that if they start letting them in too quickly.

Not necessarily. It would likely help bring back MS PC games that had been with GFWL until they gutted that. There used to be such games you could get through Steam, but the store pages had been taken down because of it. It's more like an attempt to make a do-over. I don't think they've ever been on any other platform AFAIK, so Steam is where they have the most experience.

Sure, times have changed a bit since the hiatus, so maybe they could also explore other platforms. But it's probably better to stick with the familiar waters than uncharted territory. On the other hand, people don't like Epic, so MS won't likely rely on Epic unless it's to give people options, but that depends on how they can afford to maintain that.

Tim Sweeney once said (well, actually many times) that Microsoft was trying to monopolize the PC gaming market (and even went so far as to say Microsoft would "break" Steam with Windows 10), and here they are, releasing their games on Steam.

Funny how the world works. :3

Microsoft was trying to monopolize the PC gaming market

GabeN said similar before too, because that's what they did for 2 decades.
First GfWL then with UWP. Intermittently abandoning the whole platform for their Xbox fever dream, wasting 4 billion alone on the first one.

Only now they realize PC is where it's at, finally doing it the proper way.

If Tim learns that lesson in even only 1/10 of the time-frame and it sounds like the exclusive bs indeed won't keep going for much longer than a year.

They tried but luckily not succeed.

Yes. GabeN was worried about Microsoft pulling an Apple and locking down Windows. So Steam made a push for Linux, including Proton which gets a lot of Windows games running on Linux.

Now Microsoft changes course and gets access to some Linux customers because of GabeN being worried.

Nice... but what would I give to have NHL 20XX on Steam. But it will probably never happen. Damn you, EA Sports. :(
Even if they don't want to port their hockey games to pc anymore, why not make NHL 2009 available on Steam? That would be better than nothing. yeah I know, Origins. Still, give people the choice of the client they want to use

Sorry for the off topic rambling.

Maybe a little PR from Microsoft seeing how everyone is disliking Epic's exclusives, so they say "look at us, we're giving you choices!", well, good job Microsoft on that timing. Kudos to them.

I'm still waiting for those backwards compatible games playable on XBox One to become available on PC. I want my Lost Odyssey, goddammit. It's just a matter of whether Microsoft will get to my wallet first or whether 360 emulation will reach playable level faster.

Microsoft made a huge U-turn a few years back when leadership at the top changed, and with that, x-box leadership changed, and the new people went from "x-box first, windows for the office only" towards "xbox AND windows" policy. They made some really good moves outside of gaming too and embedded themselves in lots of open source projects, helped by releasing code and stuff. Was unexpected a few years ago, came to expect it from them by now. Don't get me wrong, they're not the brand new company, there's still a lot of... feelings there, but they did change their ways... for now.

Now, gib Midtown Madness HD!

So I held out for a long time before putting Win10 on this machine. Anyway, is there a way to make a shortcut to the Gamepass app? Or do I literally have to go to Store and type in Gamepass every time I want to check it out?

Nub probs
