Yes, get the free version of live then buy it at Gamestop or wherever. You'll need Gold to play ONLINE though.

You don't need gold to play the game, but you do need it for playing online. You can still play Split Screen without gold.

ill help ya buddy, i only need a gold membership, a minecraft copy....probably a tv too, i might need some chairs and a table, some food and drinks, and a xbox 360 too, oh and 500 dolars for the cost of shipping and other stuff.
