The living creature that kills the most people every year is mosquitoes, and chainsaws, the traditional murder weapon in horror films, were invented to aid in childbirth
Or else - T-shirts were originally intended for unmarried men who themselves did not know how to sew buttons to shirts with a collar.

To my knowledge the same is true for black widows. Even if they are hungry, there is a slight chance the male can get away.

Fun fact: There are at least two ways to hum with your nose held closed:
1) Keep your mouth open. :P
2) Rebreathe the air in your mouth, hum in and out as long as you can hold your breath. (This is much harder and sounds pretty weird, but it is humming!)
Another fun fact: NASA has detected at least two exoplanets with the basic chemical building blocks of life (carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor) present in their atmospheres. [link]

Heh, sounds like throat singing!
Also, that's really awesome. Ever since I first watched Star Trek a few years ago, I've been absolutely amazed with NASA's discoveries. So many infinite possibilities for an infinite universe to hold. Thanks for sharing.

Always amazes me the species that's been on this earth for millions of years. Some of them even unchanged from the prehistoric era.

A fact about language: the English language contains a few "auto-antonyms", words that mean two opposite meanings. For example, "to dust something" can mean either to remove dust, or to add dust. And "oversight" can mean an accidental error, or supervision to make sure errors don't happen. Somewhat similarly, a "recorder" means both a device for recording music, and an instrument for producing music.
Comment has been collapsed.
I actually have never thought about that. I knew different words can mean different things like "read" and "live". Thanks for the fact :D

In 1937, a goalkeeper named Sam Bartran (Chartlon Athletic) stood alone on the field for 15 minutes because he didn't realize the game had been cancelled due to heavy fog.

That's both funny and creepy. Ever since Silent Hill, fog has always creeped me out.

Man, Silent Hill is my favourite game, but for me the creepy shit from it is the radio, can't stand white noise after that game. Fog for me it's calming and magical, maybe it's because I live in a place where the fog is not that heavy.
Another fun/cute fact: Sea otters hold each others hands when they sleep in the water so they don't drift apart.

Nutella is also considered to be kosher.
Under the supervision of the Kashruth Division of the Orthodox Union, the popular hazelnut spread, Nutella is officially certified as a Kosher product. Additionally, it was also certified Halaal by the National Independent Halaal Trust group or N.I.H.T for short. Despite being similar, the Halaal dietary requirements are considered to be different from that of Kosher diets.

That's perfect. Everyone deserves to enjoy Nutella. It's the best thing to put on sliced bread since sliced bread.

A gene and protein that separates your right brain from the left, and determines you have two eyes is called sonic hedgehog.
The gene’s symbol is SHH. The name wasn’t inspired directly by the game, but a comic-book series. A British post-doc named Robert Riddle drew inspiration from a Sonic comic his 6-year-old daughter was reading. The gene appropriately has a spikey appearance.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's... really cool. Sonic definitely has an influence worldwide. Now he's part of our anatomy!
(Also, I remember those comics. Some of my uncle's old Archie comics had little snippets inside. Loved them)

Over the years I formed a theory: If suddenly a fire breaks out in my house and there's no way out, I'll turn on the shower and get under it, because I believe you can't burn yourself to death taking a shower, I believe that this way I'll be safe.
Am I right or wrong? (I'm just kidding) hahahaha 😂

You know, that's a decent theory. I have no idea whether it's even viable or not but if my life was on the line, I might as well give it a shot, eh?

Coleoids (a group of cephalopods including octopi, squids, and nautiluses) have three hearts: a systemic heart, which circulates blood around the body (same as the human heart), and a pair of branchial hearts found at the base of the gills, with each branchial heart pumping it through each of the two gills.

You are the first in the last 5 years to create a discussion about fun facts on SG.
Is that fun? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But that's a fact.
Comment has been collapsed.
Facts are often not facts at all, but just what we believe to be true to the best of our knowledge. As we learn more and do more research, we often learn that things we believed to be facts throughout our lives were not true.
Here is an example. It is a recent study trying to figure out why balloons make a loud bang when the are popped. The conclusion states that it is most likely not just a sudden release of pressure or the tear in the latex propagating faster than the speed of sound creating a sonic boom, but is actually caused by vibrations in the balloons surface as the latex retracts.
Another recent example that is much more important than a balloon popping is how a wing creates lift. The smartest engineers in the world and anyone involved in aeronautics, like NASA, have been taught about Bernoulli's principle, but we now know that it is incorrect and we still do not understand why the curvature of a wing produces lift.
Comment has been collapsed.
Absolutely. Science is always evolving. That's what makes it even more fascinating :D

"Helicopter" has Greek roots. One root word means "wing". Which part do you think?
If you guessed pter you're correct! Helico is from helix, meaning spiral. It's literally spiral wing. This explains where the p in pterodactyl comes from, as well. Your whole life, those two words were right in front of you and you never realized they were related.

Elephants have no natural enemy, which would make them the strongest land animal except for humans.
Also, dolphins hunt in packs, they gather a large bulk of fish in a place and then they feast. They have also been seen to self stimulate themselves using eels and get high on pufferfish toxins.

If there's one thing I really like, it's learning fun random facts that I'll probably forget about in a few days.
I want some more cool people on my whitelist. So to get whitelisted, all you have to do is share a fun fact! Doesn't matter if it's a random fun fact about an animal or some weird science fact, or even if it's not so fun!
For example, recently, I found out you can't hum if you hold your nose closed.
I'm also having a whitelist-only giveaway here. (Level 0 and unfortunately regional restricted. Steam keys should have 0 restrictions on them >:()ENDED!https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/Olo99/
Edit: Whew! I was trying to reply to all the comments but there's so many! I don't wanna endlessly bump my own thread with all my comments. Thanks for wanting to be a part of my whitelist, guys. Altho I (probably) won't respond to your comment, I'm still whitelisting, I promise!
