So, I am using a 21:9 display for quite a while now (at least 2 years or so). And I love it. But of course, there are still problems with certain games. But I think it got a lot better since those displays started. More and more game support 21:9. I just made a little list of games I recently bought (not complete by any means, just what came to my mind). And I am surprised that most of those actually support my aspect ratio.

  • Gears of War 4 - 21:9 supported
  • Deus Ex Mankind Divided - 21:9 supported (on release a little problem in hacking minigame, was fixed after a few days)
  • Mafia 3 - 21:9 supported (menu broken, one effect broken, aside from that it works well)
  • Battlefield 1 - 21:9 supported
  • Thumper - 21:9 supported
  • Doom - 21:9 supported
  • Shadow Warrior 2 - 21:9 supported
  • Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition - 21:9 supported (old version didn't have support - progress! ^^)
  • Virginia - 21:9 supported
  • Redout - 21:9 supported
  • Valley - 21:9 supported
  • ABZU - 21:9 supported
  • Telltale's Batman - no support
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™: Mutants in Manhattan - no support

Of course most 2D games won't have 21:9 support (honorable mention: Canabalt!), and I am fine with that. But as far as bigger 3D titles go, there is definitely some progress. When I bought this monitor, I had to edit ini and exe files way more than nowadays.

What do you think about 21:9 monitors? Do you have one? Do you like the format? What is your experience with games and compatibility?

What aspect ratio is your main monitor?

IT hurts my eyes when i use 21-9 Monitor ... thats not a native resolution ppl are used to , same as 16-9 wasnt the native resolution when it replaced 4:3 .

I guess it may become the standart in future , ppl seems to praise it quite a bit , but for me at least its not something i will be moving towards anytime soon as it only gives me eye strain .

The main thing i hate about it , as everything new and inovative in a way is that the people who use it ( not you in this case :P ) seems desperate to push their thing into others .

There is a daily thread in multiple forums i visit about No support for 21-9 monitors for some Game and how its the supperior resolution and were all plebs for usingg 16:9 etc etc etc ...

nah, i think it's stupid to try to push one's opinion onto others. games should support all (common) resolutions, and everybody should use what he likes the most. :)

that being said, the forum threads about lack of 21:9 resolution in a game are absolutely necessary. and i already saw a lot of them. also wrote a lot of them. and i honestly don't think people try what you say there. maybe there are exceptions (of course there are ;) ), but most of the time the 21:9 people just say that they want their resolution supported, while inevitably there will be a few idiots who don't have anything better to do than to tell us that we shouldn't even ask for it, because we cannot expect our resolution to be supported, and all that BS. ^^

using 16:10 laptop.
i cant deny that bigger well be better but small is mostly better in most cases when you play alone.
you wouldnt want a huge screen right in-front of you where you cant focus on small details it once ( ammo, hp etc )

16:9 on 24" - feels like too much information gets overlooked left and right from center, seen that Shadow Warrior 2 even
even utilized that, by rendering the center in best quality and the sides in lesser one (depending on the settings)
Personally i wouldn't buy a 21:9 one, even though it looks more immersive with appropriate content.

Watching stuff from that small distance (~0,4m) makes me place the window somewhat centered on the screen and leave it mostly in 720p. That's the easiest on the eyes, as it grasps the entire picture faster. Else information gets overlooked or it takes more focus to see it ... which again doesn't hurt the immersion as you're focused mostly on some part of the screen and you're not trying to find Waldo.

yeah its proven by human biology - fov aspect of roughly 5:3 in ~ this shape

1st pic roughly: 2x 4:3 || ~ 3x 4:3 format which is practical for comparing, writing a paper
while actual reading, just shifts/focuses your eyes attention to one of the 4:3 sized columns

2nd pic is like a long 1x 4:3 column but without common content to watch at that length pointless

well, i use 9:16 at work (software development) on my main monitor, and i can tell you it makes a lot of sense there. especially when looking at longer functions, or several short functions which call each other, it can really help to be able to see all that at once without scrolling all the time. :)

Yup that makes perfectly sense for an regular and actual application
if my monitor had an 180° twist-mount i would've used that too once or twice.

It's 16:10 for me. I don't even mind the black bars top+bottom or each side when an application can't handle it properly. I just wish more modern monitors would come out at this ratio - I dislike the smaller 16:9's and my monitors are getting pretty old now.

i had a 16:10 monitor before i switched to 21:9. it was a good monitor. i liked that it had a few more pixels than 16:9 monitors (which is basically the same 21:9 does for me now, just on the sides instead of top/bottom).

Exact same, I had the 16:10 Dell 2405 for 10 years and a couple of months ago switched to the Acer x34, a 21:9 screen. I don't think I can ever go back to non Ultrawide screens now, it's soooo good for gaming, animations, video editing, game development, everything really.

16:9 here, but I get how you feel about supported resolutions. My old monitor was 900p and many games defaulted to 720p or 1080p if I was lucky. I ended up buying a 1080p one for gaming and the old got relegated as the "browser" monitor.

My 19" 16:10 LCD recently broke, so I'm using an old 17" 4:3 CRT (85Hz masterrace) right now.
I'm waiting for Black Friday. :D
90% I'll pick a 27" 16:9 monitor, with the option of using a custom resolution to play in 21:9 in those games that I think would benefit from it.

I have 21:9 for a half a year now. Love it despite some games having black bars. But it doesn't bother me. Multi-tasking is very nice having two windows side by side. In 16:9 FHD having two screen side by side is not that convenient, but in 21:9 it is very nice. it's a 2560x1080 screen btw, I just sit a meter away from the screen so the pixel density is acceptable. I used to have a 27" 16;9 FHD screen, it was ok as well.

It'll be a while before I go to a 21:9 monitor.
They're nice and all, but not very practical for a triple-monitor set-up. ;_;

my favorite is 16:9, but i've swaped for 16:10 after 4:3 so i never got to actually play with a desktop monitor matching 16:9 resolution. i'm mostly using 16:10 res for games except in fps, but it gives me some slight motion sickness even though i've been using that res for like 10 years

Maybe Dariusburst CS, it's designed for 32:9 but I believe it'll run in 21:9 (maybe with letterboxing? That's what it does in 16:9). Here's a video: https://youtu.be/0DhNRD8ZeDk
