I just bought a copy of Half-Life 2 the other day from a Flea Market, and when I get home, I start installing it. After it's done installing, I find out I need the activation key, and because I bought it secondhand, SUPRISE! It doesn't come with it. Why can't Steam just let me play a game that is not only already installed on my computer, but also let me play games that I borrowed or is secondhand? IT'S SO ANNYOING!

Activation keys are nothing new and certainly not limited to Valve. PC gaming has been using them for decades, so if you didn't know you might need a serial/CD-key, that's on you.

I was supposed to write something but I figured that there's no point. Now I'm just gonna leave this here.

You bought a used game, it's your fault. Now just get it back to Flea Market. And Half-Life 2 was very cheap during Summer Sale.

This is not a problem exclusive to steam, but to the entire online distribution / DRM thing.

"IT'S SO ANNYOING!"

It does sound very Annyong.

Annyong.

Annyong.

How much did you pay for it? I'd laugh if a working copy were cheaper during the Summer sale.

You buy a game from VALVE and you expect it not to ask you to activate it on Steam? Stupidity level? -IT'S OVER 9000.

Or the good old days of 'what is the 56nd letter on page 195 in the manual?' That some would do.

Oh god. I remember that, and I specifically remember not being able to play a few of my games because of it. Almost makes you realize that developers/publishers really weren't any nicer back then... the technology just wasn't available for any kind of centralized large-scale DRM solution.

yup I remember Monkey Island 2 and Day of tentacle had those, I actually got through Day of tentacle protection solving it by pure luck as a kid, I was happy :3 It took sooooo many tries XD

Same, an old racing game, it was something along the lines of like a mario kart but for windows 3.1/dos, played in first person view, thankfully it had multiple choice for getting into the game.

Leisuresuit Larry made it a pain too, I played one at like 20 and took like 20 minutes to get into it.

No shit. Important reminder: Don't ever buy a used game that uses Steam. If it is 'Used' it means somebody already used the activation key, and Steam requires activation keys.

it's completely your fault, Steam has nothing to do with this issue.

But... atleast you have the box, i want that box

Used Steam game.
Used...
Usually, "used" means, like, you know... Already used...

When buying second hand, ALWAYS buy DRM free. If you want a Steam key, trade for it, or buy it.
