well, you can't really see it as a replacement for PS4/XBox One controllers. controller-optimized games work better on a traditional controller, if you ask me. you can use the steam controller for them, but i would not necessarily recommend it. this is a controller you can use to play mouse-based games. like turn-based strategy games, for example. you can't do that with a PS4 controller. with this one you can play Civilization or Banner Saga on your couch. and that is the main purpose. so i would see it as an additional input device, not as the only device you want to use. was it worth the money? i don't know yet. i just got it today. and i tried only 2 games so far, for only some minutes. i can answer that in a few days. ;)
and the price was actually 63€ with shipping. but i could sell Portal 2 for 2 keys and Rocket League for 7 or 8 keys (so ~20$ "cashback"). so in the end it was cheaper than i thought.

exactly, it's not a replacement. it's an additional controller for games you can't really play with a ps4/xbox controller.

most people think even an analog stick is bad for fighting games. that's why they use digital fighting sticks. i can't imagine a fighting game to be good with the steam controller, to be honest. xD

I thought I read on the Steam page that shipping was included with the price.

at least not for me (Germany). don't know, maybe it's like you say in the US?

I might get one in the near future to play rts games but for now I'm sticking with my X360 controller. I almost never use my m&k, only for rts games or games without any controller support. I hardly play any fast paced fps games so I don't really care about being less fast and precise when playing with a controller.

it was just a demonstation of how it controls in a FPS. i didn't intend to beat the whole game like this. ;)

it's a great game, you should play it some time. :)
(i believe it was in a recent humble bundle, btw)

i didn't pay any additional duties in germany. and my controller actually came from holland. i believe they have like a warehouse there.

I still think about getting it. I mean, there's the Xbox One controller, which is the nicest controller I've ever had. And the reviews thus far give me a rather speptical view on the device. Yet I also consider how new the controller is. Maybe I'll just wait..

as i explained above, it's an additional controller, not a replacement for traditional controllers. typical controller-based games (e.g. third person games like DmC) are probably still best played with an xbox/ps4 controller. i would not want to have only the steam controller, because i just see so many games i would rather play with my xbox controller instead.
one good example: InfiniFactory doesn't have controller support. i bought that game and installed it some weeks ago. but at that day i just wanted to lean back on the couch and play a relaxing game. so i played something else. i tried it yesterday with the steam controller. it works pretty well with it. so that's one of the games i will definitely use this controller for.
:)

I see. So you avoid having to use stuff like Joy2Key and at the same time, have a decent device in your hands. Neato!

well, i don't think joy2key can give you the same experience the steam controller does. the trackpad is very different from a analog stick. i mean, look at the video. it nearly looks like someone controls the game with a mouse. you can turn around way faster. and i am sure every game with an actual mouse cursor will control way better than with joy2key and a traditional controller. i yet have to try something like a turn based strategy game with mouse controls.

man, i wish i'd get the Valve Complete Pack with all past and future (!) Valve releases. already wrote emails to Valve. hope they will activate this on my account. ^^

I just tried out the new Steam Controller. While it was horrible in Half Life 2 and the standard FPS setup, it was actually pretty decent in DeadCore with a custom setup. I am not completely convinced yet, but I can definitely see the potential. Mouse & keyboard are still way better for games like that. But if you want to play on the couch, this might actually be a good alternative. I liked it better in DeadCore than a traditional controller.
I uploaded a little video. If you are interested in the controller, have a look:
DeadCore with Steam Controller
As you can see, moving the camera is way faster than with a traditional controller. And the trackpad gives a nice haptic feedback.
I don't like that some of the buttons have such a loud clicking sound. And the 4 main buttons (A, B, X, Y) are smaller than on an XBox or PS4 pad. This is something you will have to get used to. But overall my impression is positive.
Oh, I nearly forgot - please have some games! ^^
Level 1
Level 3
If you also ordered the controller (and already got it), what are your impressions? Nice alternative to the mouse on the couch or a waste of money? ^^
