So, in recent days I got some steam keys, and I'm interested in being able to sell (something else, not the keys :P) in the steam market. But it requires a purchase 30 days before I can start. So, after activating them, in the register they count as Purchase, yet it says the price is Free. So, I wanna know, will these keys activate steam market for me after the day limit, or will they not? Cause then I'd better go and buy something directly from the steam store rather than wait 30 days hoping to get access to something I wont get to. Thanks

if you use keys(you said they show free once activated) you can't sell those keys. they're tied to you forever

also you can't sell game keys(like if you bought somewhere else) in the market anyway, it has to be inventory

edit- ....are you talking about humble bundle keys?

wut, I'm not saying I'll sell the keys. What I'm saying is that if activating the keys will count as the "purchase" that steam market demands to activate

No.

Of course not. You still spent $0 on Steam, so why should they activate it for you?

BTW these key show as free, cos they are bought elsewhere and valve were just kind enough to add them to your library for your convenience (and hope to convert you to steam customer :P )

I'd assume so. Or an amazon bundle, but I assume Humble.

They're not bundle ones. They're Metro 2033, Miner Wars 2081, and Dino D-Day (okay, that last one is from a bundle). Plus a DLC for certain online game

if you use keys bought elsewhere I think steam counts it as a redeemed gift not a purchase. not 100% sure though, but I think

so your required purchase 30 days ago had to be through steam.....probably

(also in the event that some keys do count as purchases it may be relevant that metro was given free, could be a different item)

keys can't be activated as market, they have to be inventory items to start with. using them just puts htem in library.

I don't think keys can activate market.

No, you need to use a method of payment on Steam, I think.

While cd-keys can activate market they probably need to be counted as Retail.

When you check Market do you see number of days going down, or some date when you can trade? If yes, you should be safe. If not, you can try getting cheapest thing as gift from here.

They are counted as retails, does that mean it might actually activate it?

I won't know for sure. BUT, when I was making an account for brother he had big "you can trade from SOME-DATE". Don't know if they didn't changed that, but if you have some date you're safe, if not you probably need to buy something.

You can buy some ultra cheap DLC and you're set. We are talking about 0.24$ or €.

Nope, purchasing DLC would require purchaisng the game first and onece he's purchased the game he won't need to purchase the DLC as he's already made a purchase

No, you don't need to own the game to purchase DLC!

Either way I'd have to put 5 € into my steam wallet, even if I want to buy something worth less than a euro. So I'd rather not, as of now.

not when buying a game - thats only when doing steam wallet (correct me if im wrong)

You're right, you can pay the exact price with Paypal, credit cards and so on. You don't need to use the Steam wallet at all.

I'm pretty sure no key will count as a purchase. I've activated quite a few keys, but my account isn't "in good standing."

How did you get your account not in good standing?

I didn't do anything, "In good standing" just means that you've bought something from the Steam store in the last year, which I haven't done. I've gotten indie bundles and such, but never bought anything directly from Steam. I guess the idea is that otherwise people could create an account to scam people, and then they don't care if their account gets banned or penalized. But to use the Steam Marketplace, you need to have bought a game from the Steam store, so that any penalties for scamming would have a bite.

The OP was asking whether activating a key he bought would count as buying something from Steam (because he hasn't bought anything directly from Steam either), and I was saying "Nope, it doesn't."

Buying tf2 premium will fully activate your account. It's cheaper too than putting steam wallet since they require $5+ minimum. You can try to trade those keys for tf2 keys and buy an upgrade to premium or ask for a tf2 upgrade to premium for the keys directly.

E: Oh or use paypal and card directly...totally forgot about that :p

TF2 Premium does not unlock the community market. The in-game store and the Steam store are separate. In order to buy/sell items on the community market, you need to have made a purchase from the Steam store (keys will not work unfortunately) between 30 days and 1 year ago. In order to sell TF2 items in the community market, you also need to be TF2 premium in addition to the above requirement.

I was talking about activating a new steam account which will allow you to use all steam features like ability to trade (in steam), adding friends etc. Activating tf2 premium counts as a store purchase since you technically bought tf2 from steam store. Not sure about the community market but I'm pretty sure you can buy/sell stuff once you activate the full steam account and waited 30 days. You might need to have verified your email too, I think.

Any Steam user who has a successful purchase on their account between 30 days and one year ago, and has Steam Guard enabled for 15 days can list items on the Community Market.

The keys count as Purchase, yet the price according to them says Free. There's the confusion

so you want to sell something in the market yet you don't want to be a steam customer? sounds fishy. no offence.

heh. I simply can't afford most of what I want, and I'm getting the games through trades or other websites. I will probably later, but not as of now. That's why I want the market, it's another way of obtaining games (in this case, a lil' bit of cash for my steam wallet)

fair enough.

Activating Steam keys and receiving gifts both do not count as purchases.

You have to make an actual purchase from the Steam Store. You can even choose to add the game you bought to your inventory and it will count.

Even without making a purchase in the last 30 days, you can trade your items (cards, TF keys, etc). The trade restriction only applies to games in your inventory.

So that's a way to trade items outside of the market since you can't use it yet.
