Wouldn't be surprised if they were checking profiles. Because lots of games automatically imply you have heart of gold and will buy anything for any random person.

Some time ago I had Skyrim in my inventory for a very very long amount of time (a year or more). You wouldn't fucking believe how many people were adding me because of that. Lesson learned, won't make my inventory public again.

I think professional beggars use automated methods to find their victims, scan everyone in a group for their loot, or something.
