Now, I am sort of new to the Steamgifts website. I joined a while ago, used it for a few weeks, then stopped and came back a while later. I'm sure the way things work has changed, but one thing that always confused me is; people will sometimes put in the description "I will add the winner on Steam. :)" Why does that matter...? I have so many worthless friends on Steam, why would I want to add another? It just doesn't make sense to me.

they do that so they can send you a message with the key/link or give you the game gift.

I thought that was a given?

to make sure the winner received it, maybe? There were threads here that people did send keys via mail and got no response from the winner

So that they can gift the game to the winner? Is this a troll?

When I first joined a couple years ago, it was implied that the person HAD to add you on Steam anyway. Now we have crap like emailing Humble Bundle links and crap, so why is that such an important thing to say?

No, I gave away over 500 games and never added any winner on Steam. I prefer using e-mail to send the gifts/keys. So it's not obligatory to add people who win giveaways as friends. You can always use e-mail.

So why put it in the description?

Does it matter? Honestly? o_O

Some people like adding the winners of their giveaways so they can speak to them and give them their games directly, some people don't...

I do most of the time when it's a Steam gift, simply because I like to trade it directly so that there's a record of it right on Steam, sometimes I even do it when I'm giving away a key.

But honestly, why does it really matter to you?

Are you winning a lot of giveaways where the winners add you and you're not able to delete them right afterwards?

I always make a point to tell people to not worry about removing me, it won't bother me at all.

It could be because a lot of people reject friend requests from unknown users but it will remind them that the person adding them MIGHT be a giveaway creator.

I don't see the problem with saying it, they may not want to email the key/gift/other for whatever reason. Also, you're not forced to keep them on your list after they've given you the gift. (Though this doesn't mean you should be rude about how you go about removing them either)

Edit: As hustlayo mentioned, it's not a necessary thing that they add you on Steam.

It just makes it seem like they're sooo important, that it's a blessing to have them on your friends list, when it really is part of the "business"

I think you're missing one thing. They usually don't want to become your Steam friends, it's just only for gift delivery. I prefer adding winners too, it's faster than mail.

Well whem I say it, it's like how Crocross explained. It's to let people know I'll be adding them so they can maybe expect a friend request if they won. I'd wager a lot of people didn't read where I said that or forgot, but maybe it will give someone somewhere a clue as to why I was adding them.

I don't care if they remove me straight after.

I prefer adding the winner it is a lot more personal and i like it that way, also if i it is a gift, i prefer sending it directly to your steam

Some people are happy to send a key via mail, others want to make sure you get it so they'll add you and put in chat while you're there.

Same if it's a gift - some are happy to send the gift to your email, some would rather add you and trade it in person (or via trade offer). Sending a gift to a person's mail adds you to their friend list when they activate it anyway.
