So, Kootra was streaming some CS:GO on Wednesday, and suddenly a bunch of police officers with assault rifles come in and tell him to get down on the ground. Apparently someone thought that it would be funny to call 911 and tell that there is someone shooting people and taking hostages in the office building that the Creatures use.

Some people recorded it and posted it on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz8yLIOb2pU

It also got on the news.
http://www.dailydot.com/esports/swatting-the-creatures-kootra/

It's not just Kootra and streamers, a lot of other people have gotten swatted, pretty much anyone can be swatted.
What do you think? Why do people do this? And could these trolls scare away some streamers? I think it's incredibly stupid, some guy thinks that it's hilarious to send cops to deal with some non-existent shooter or bomber, making them evacuate schools, stop traffic and ruin everyones normal day.

This is the kind of world we live in? Hackers can obtain information about some guy on youtube just so he could "Joke around"? This is fucking stupid. It wastes everyone's time. The police could be doing something serious insted of sending a SWAT unit to some gamer's house. This is not just some kind of innocent Prank call, or "Trolling". This is dangerous and irresponsible, and i hope those hackers would find out that responsibility means through Jail time.

The world where answer to any threat is to send SWAT out, and legislation to stop police obtaining chemical/biological/nuclear weapons don't pass...

that's not the world we live in, it's the murica/canada "we" live in, that doesn't happen so easily in europe (and probably in asia too)

yeah, police clearly knows it's a gamer house.. no they don't know that.

Luckily I'm living in Europe so some retard can't just tell Special Police Unit to storm my house and they will listen to it xD hopefully ;)

Out of curiosity, what happens when there is an actual bomb or hostage threat?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Bomb threats in public places are treated seriously, whole buildings get evacuated and searched.

But in case of private houses it seems only logical to investigate the case before storming doors just because someone made a call -_- especially if there are hostages involved...

This was in an office building, not a house.

Yes but Police/SWAT was told it's a hostage situation, not a bomb threat. I can't imagine Police barging in the doors as a first thing in a hostage situation in Europe, that seems just utterly stupid and irresponsible without letting a negotiator have a go or at least acquiring some actual information about what's happening on the scene.

Well, best thing is - the guy who did this "joke" wrote about it on his Twitter. But police probably won't do anything about it. I'm just waiting for the moment someone gets killed like this and then this "joker" starts thinking what he has done.

Good thing I live in Europe and worst we can get is bomb threat when people just get evacuated and nobody comes in with guns.

I cant believe its so easy to send swat to someones house pffft merica.
Someone is gonna get hurt or killed sooner or later because of this.
And this is really retarded.

I am not normally a fan of deterrence, but I think it has become time to crack down and trace and prosecute all of these for a couple years with a vengeance.

this is one of the reasons I'll never want to live in murica, it's not perfect in europe either but seriously in murica the police situations are a lot more ridiculous that when I hear some news about police shooting/mistakes/misunderstadings murica is the 1st thing that comes to my mind

Its just the police doing their job what if there was a real bomb etc. They are supposed to think the worst of everything until its confirmed that its safe for everyone.

Comment has been collapsed.

The real problem is that these so called police aren't doing their jobs. They are doing someone else's. This is the job of the military, not the police. The U.S. Police have crossed a fundamental line between what is Police and Military. Really scarry stuff.

the "swatted" term exists because of that mentality, the police is really paranoid in the US and that increases the chances of an innocent falsely accused person being shot and killed, it wastes everyone's time and the own swat resources. if you think it's ok to go full "swat mode" just because an anonymous call said this and that at location X with no proof and/or documents to support his accusation then you should be living in the time when you could accuse everyone that they weren't catholics (with no proof) and they would be tortured by the clergy right away

Wow, this is very interesting, and also scary. Glad, I'm not living in the US...
I hope, that or those prakster(s) get caught very soon. Also, anyone knows, how the story ended? Did they release Kootra or anything? Not that I'd know anything about him, because I'm not a CS gamer, but I still hope, he is all right.

I think he got released after about 4 hours of interrogation, and his friend who was also in the house was released after 2-3 hours.

It's not limited to the US, a friend of mine here in the UK was Swatted. It was instigated by a former member of the GMod community he runs, so is another gaming related incidence. Considering how long people have been prank calling the emergency services, this is sadly just another incarnation of that.

The fight against these "trollers" really needs to be upped. These anonymous entities and profiles people get to adopt are becoming extremely dangerous to the safety of others.

They should catch whoever did this and set him/her as an example, publicly punishing the person and setting the norm to try to get the consequences of such an irresponsible action through to many of these trolls.
Imagine if, when the SWAT team entered the room, Jordan was doing a skit with one of his fake prop guns? He would have been shot right there in the spot.

It's disgusting to see comments about calling the police using excessive force or abusing their power, they're only doing their job.

If there is a possible hostage or terrorist situation, they're not going to knock gently on the door asking you to let them in (even though they yelled warrant before busting in). See it from their perspective, to them Kootra is a suspect. They're not going to be nice to you if you've threatened to hurt others. They did nothing wrong in that situation, only what they were supposed to do.

Imagine the shitstorm you people would raise if there was a call for help and police threw their hands up in the air and told you there's nothing they can do because "muh 4th amendment" or whatever the fuck you use as and excuse. If there is a situation, they are going to answer it and deal with paperwork later. Better be safe than sorry.

This is definitely much more justifiable than most SWAT raids, people shooting shit up (albeit no one was, but these cops couldn't of known that so it's really not the cops' fault) is a lot worse than the typical "this guy might have drugs or something i guess, lets do a no-knock raid without a warrant" excuse for raids that normally occur. I wish this (even though nothing happened) was more the purpose of SWAT than just attacking drug suspects. Taking down actual violent dangerous criminals like they thought they were doing here is really quite noble, it isn't their fault that they didn't know it was a prank.

Psychos shooting people are serious threats with serious consequences, unless those psychos are cops. That's another issue though, and likely one reason why people in this thread are so hard on these cops. This story seems like one of the few instances where the "just doing their job" line is actually a justifiable excuse for such a raid, and nobody got hurt so nothing bad really happened. I think your post is one of the first times I've seen that typically statist argument actually used in an excusable scenario.

Saw the vid on fefes blog a few days ago and were like WTF. This new trend is seriously disturbing and plain dangerous. Fake ordering a pizza might give you a laugh, but this is just wrong. If those trolls keep on swatting streaming guys, it's just a matter of time until such a raid goes terribly wrong and the streamer or one of his family is getting hurt or killed.
