Warcraft 3 gold now, Starcraft 2 "gold" later. If you cared about multiplayer then I'd recommend SC2 over WC3.

Warcraft 3 still lives through its community. Thousands of single and multiplayer maps, with new ones coming out every week still, after all these years. Campaign is good too. Graphics are pretty old, of course, but that doesn't affect the gameplay.

Like others said, Warcraft 3 is the answer. SC2 is a competitive multiplayer game with one solo campaign as a side thing.

They both have very good campaigns, but Warcraft 3's is much longer, especially with the expansion included.

WC3:TFT "Founding Of Durotar" chapter is one of my favorite bits of gaming ever. I still replay it every couple months.

The entire WC3 battle chest is amazing though.

Btw, it still looks decent (not great) and you can run it in widescreen (although the in game UI will be stretched).
