i'm using Xbox beta and i already miss the achievements. I've gotten better games from there than i could get on Ubisoft or Origin, but the achievements not only make the process less of a waste of time, but also help you discover little details and easter eggs left from the developers as well as a push to try harder difficulties
sometimes achievements make you feel like you barely scratched the surface of what the game has to offer, which is good, if you liked the game.

i'm currently replaying gears of war ultimate through the Xbox beta for pc and using gog galaxy to track my achievements and my friends's :D . hunting achievements has always been in my veins and any store or platform that does not adopt them as a core feature gets a big "no, pass" from me

So many achievements are hateful, and take all the enjoyment out of the game.
"Complete every side-quest, even though 90% of them are tedious busywork that make you hate life".
"Kill every unique enemy in the game, even the ones that are a rare spawn that only appear 2% of the time."
"Complete the game without taking damage."
"Pick up every collectible in the game, all 5000 of them."
"Collect 200 hour's worth of resources."
Even for games I love, where I want to milk as much content out of the game as I can, I refuse to do such achievements.

That was my first approach to Dead Space 3, which i thought was hot garbage. But after Completing in on origin (kinda, one is bugged), i found some appreciation for what it did right. And yes, you do have to finish the game on the highest difficulty in one life

You think playing games is a waste of time?
I actually think chasing achievements is a waste of time - some of them are literally that: designed to have you do the same thing over and over again, not because it's fun or you enjoy it, but simply because someone somewhere you don't know said "this is an achievement."
At the risk of sounding really old, you know what we did before achievements? We made up our own challenges. Beat the game without getting this upgrade, without this item, without increasing your health, while taking the harder path, under a time limit. See if you can beat the boss with a normal weapon, or the weakest weapon.
If you enjoy achievements, you could make up your own, or just look up the official ones and do them. You won't get a pop-up confirming you did it, but you'll know you did and that's all that matters.

Without reviews, achievments, groups like Blaeo, i would have quit gaming by now.
perhaps the ocasional Arkane or Rockstar game, thats abouy it

That's like saying that you'd never read books were it not for book groups and homework assignments. Do you not enjoy actually playing the games?
As much as it pains me to say this, maybe gaming just isn't for you, and you'd be better served with a different hobby? One that you actually enjoy doing for the sheer pleasure of it?

I feel we are focusing too much on the achievement part, when in fact are all the features that steam has and to a lesser extent, consoles have them, ubisoft, origin.

He can certainly keep playing games with achievements - I'm not looking to stop him, and if he likes that, great! I'm just really surprised that someone would play games without enjoying the actual act of playing games.
I totally get doing things you don't enjoy for a reward - like doing homework to get a good grade or doing actual work to get paid - but doing it as a hobby? I guess exercise would be the closest example of that, assuming you don't enjoy the exercises (does anyone actually enjoy the exercises?).

I've never enjoyed those intense-style workouts, though they serve the purpose of fitting a quick workout into your daily routine.
I stick with a workout I actually enjoy (and can do indoors when the weather is bad), and one that I find more constructive than just lifting or running - primarily Shotokan, drumming, and the heavy bag. I used to do a lot of off-road biking, but haven't had as much time this year.

Oh, I don't consider stuff like mountain biking, drumming exercise - that's pure pleasure for me, just like downhill skiing and rock climbing. Sure, you get a workout, but you don't feel like you're exercising, you're just enjoying the activity. I too used to do a fair bit of mountain biking, but haven't had the time in recent years.
I meant more like push-ups, crunches, jogging in place, squats, holding yoga poses...
What's the heavy bag?

That's the idea. ;)

why not, you know, i could stay on steam and keep using its features, like achievements, reviews, an actual community
Dishonored has different achievements to play the game differently either being your approach, character, or removing gift abilities completely.
it also has a riddle that you can solve with a logic table, and all you get is an achievement
feels fun to me,It's not like i'm forced to complete a game, just because achievments exist.

No, there is a connection :D
I mean, since there are some good games Epic releasing, i am not buying new games and playing old ones in case they will be free. (I love indies and it is not so rare games i love goes free)
So, you can do what i do as well, play your backlog until epic stops :D

No game they have given for free was previously sold on their store. So your fear seems unwarranted. Games they sell are very very unlikely to be given away as a part of their free games program during this year. And it's only running for 2019, unless they decide to change their plans.

I've only seen them give away games they don't have in store yet
and i got all 29 games so far :)

I agree with you on the community features. While I think they are a nice addition (I love making and sharing screenshots, for instance), I don't feel they are necessary. In the end it's about the game. And getting only the game is enough for me. I always wonder if people who bring this argument also argue against DRM-free games that you just download from the devs. Because it's literally the same situation.
Your argument about the free games seems strange to me. You mentioned Detroit and WWZ. Both brand new games that won't end up free anytime soon. Just look at the free games we got so far. While I applaud the general quality and value of them, they are not even close to being equal value to Detroit. I don't think you have to worry there.
I would however worry more about whether the store will still exist in a few years. Since it is so new, this is a real concern. I personally don't care too much. I bought Beyond Two Souls, played it (for the second time) and will probably never touch it again. I don't need to own it anymore after beating it. So for me it would be fine if in a few years Epic decided they lost the war against Steam and closed the gates. But I understand that many see this in a different way. I get it if people are cautious and don't want to invest in such a new store with an uncertain future.

Well shouldn’t be a problem to keep up the store money wise when I look at the amount Fortnite Alone brings in.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sure, but their longterm goal is not to finance the store through other revenues. It has to become self-sustainable. And if they see after a few years that they won't get to that point, they will shut it down. Not saying that will necessarily happen. They seem to be serious about this whole thing, and the Epic store might be with us for a very long time. But it is a possibility.
Comment has been collapsed.
that's just freebie FOMO. On consoles PS Plus and Games with Gold Users experience it every month when they announce the "free" games. In epic's case it isn't really free. It's also tencent helping to bankroll this project. Who knows, epic users might be using their payment system soon
Comment has been collapsed.
Probably because there are other things going for the platform that you don't find in the Epic Store. But it is exactly as how you describe it, especially in the early days of plus when games were pretty good. I remember getting dmc and bioshock infinite when they were relatively new, and my physical copies have remained unopened since. I feel it will lead to the same effect tho, For the longest time I tried to maintain a yearly subscription on xbox live and ps plus. After 2017 I just stopped and just bought a month or 2 when I really want to go online. Most of my recent physical games on console now are single player, the multiplats and multiplayer stuff I leave for the PC.

I get it, a store that's constantly giving nice games for free doesn't exactly encourages me to buy from it.
I do miss achievements, cloud saves and community stuff, that's why I've been holding on playing on the epic store. They should get it up to standard sooner or later, I hope.

I think I saw someone say that they had to suspend it for a game due to a technical problem so it's not like it's working reliably right now. I'll wait for them to sort it out tho, I have no rush and a massive backlog on steam and other clients.
Comment has been collapsed.
it's working for the games that offer the service. just like on steam. ther is also not cloud save on all games
Comment has been collapsed.
An argument I haven't seen yet is just supporting the devs. Epic probably gives them a boat load of money to host the game for free for a while (giving them financial support). If you like the game you should/could buy it to show your appreciation. Epic also showing its appreciation should be irrelevant.
Comment has been collapsed.
Epic doesn't care about supporting anyone but themselves, though. They don't care about the devs all that much and they sure as hell don't care about the gamers. They just want to replace Steam and become the next gaming monopoly, that's all they're care about.
Comment has been collapsed.
Make it simple as I do, if you have big respect to developers for a game they created you buy the game, developers gets money to make more good games.
All platforms should have detailed user profil pages and community, gog started to do something in this matter to be a bit similiar in this to steam, others as far as i know no.

Double Damage Games can add it to Steam or anywhere else on December 6th unless they sign another deal with Epic that changes that.
Comment has been collapsed.
same can be said with bundles and steam play now and keep forever stuff
as long as you play the game annd have fun right away, why do you care if it gets discounted later to 0$ !!!
Comment has been collapsed.
There is only one problem with epic store and that is that it exists.
Comment has been collapsed.
I thought about writing something similar, haha. Agreed!

The same could be said about Humble Monthly. Never spend more than $12 for a new game because it could end up as a headliner in a Monthly bundle. And if you subscribe, then never buy a game unless it's already appeared in a previous Monthly bundle.
In fact, never buy any game that isn't part of a bundle because you never know if it'll show up in a bundle.
Or, if you have the financial means to buy games, then buy games when you want to and feel great about the fact that you're supporting gaming.
Comment has been collapsed.
Is this much different than buying a game on Steam and wondering if it will go on sale for 75% off next week? Or if it'll be in a Humble or Fanatical bundle with a bunch of other games for a few bucks?
My main problem with the Epic Games Store is that I don't see any way to organize my library, or display it as a list. Those giant icons with no sorting or categories makes it awfully hard to browse my library! Am I missing a setting somewhere?
Comment has been collapsed.
It's almost as if they designed it so that you wouldn't feel bad about having a low game count on your library. I agree. Everything looks big and bold and It's going to be more of a problam organising everything the more games you have

Over the past years, Steam managed to pretty much eliminte piracy. Epic brought it back in just a couple of months, lol.
Seriously though, the shit Epic does should be unaceptable and it's quite alarming that some people are not only perfectly fine with it, but are defending Epic for some unfathomable reason. Gamers have no bloody standards nowadays >_<
Comment has been collapsed.
Everything gets cheaper or basically free eventually. Software, games, physical items.
Buy the games when you want to play them or if a multi-player title when they're still relavant concerning the available user-base. Or don't.
But if the fear of "losing" x amount of money in a few months time is so large then you'll never buy anything or miss out on experiences you could have had.

But make no mistake: Valve doesn't exist for the players. Valve doesn't exist for the devs. Valve exists to be a business.
But make no mistake: GOG doesn't exist for the players. GOG doesn't exist for the devs. GOG exists to be a business.
But make no mistake: Origin doesn't exist for the players. Origin doesn't exist for the devs. Origin exists to be a business.
But make no mistake: itch.io doesn't exist for the players. itch.io doesn't exist for the devs. itch.io exists to be a business.
I can go on.. These all places where people work to earn money
Comment has been collapsed.
It's funny how people don't seem to realise this. The moment big money comes in the picture which ever company you care about stops caring about you and starts caring about making as much money as possible even if it hurts its own customers.
I prefer Steam over Epic, but I'm well aware that I'm just a meaningless number in their eyes. They don't care about us. They only start caring about our opinion when it hurts their sales.

So this might be unpopular opinion but i actually have no problems with playing games on epic store. No achivements? Don't care, used to care.
No community stuff? Don't care, used to care. Not saying these are not important but it doesn't really matter to me anymore. But my main concern is not these stuff i don't wanna talk about steam benefits, my problem with epic is i don't feel like buying games from there.
Not because i don't trust the store, i bought Detroit and WWZ. But i don't trust the free games they are handing out. Every time i feel like buying something from there i feel like what if this goes to free games list in couple weeks. That itch is making me stop buying games. The freebie system is good to attrack new users but its also risky bussiness imo.
