Yes exactly, but when you are hyped it doesn't mean you buy it the second it gets released. I wait for SGW3 to get some positive reviews and then I buy it a day or two later.
Unless it has an exclusive pre-order feature like the cute white bath-duck in the latest Hitman, then you just have to pre-order it.

I got disappointed so many times before, so I try not to get hyped ^^ I never check trailers, previews or gameplays before a game is released.
Also no, you should never, ever, under any circumstances pre-order a video game. It's plain stupid. If they threaten to not give me some content if I buy it after the release, I simply don't buy that game. :)

Dictating when people should or should not buy something is plain stupid.
I pre-ordered Dragon's Dogma from GMG. Their base pre-order price was the same 20% off as Steam but they had 20% off that too. I knew exactly what the game had to offer as I'd already played the original console release so the only concern was the port quality and given how shoddy the original release was anything would have been an improvement. I played it on release and currently have 250 hours in it. My pre-order price is only a few GBP above the historical low.
I pre-ordered The Witcher 3 from Nuuvem. I got the cheaper regional price, on top of all the bonuses that I would have got purchasing it directly from GOG. Again, I played this on release and am hundreds of hours in. The regular price at Nuuvem before discounts is again only just over the historical low.
For a game that you have a good idea what to expect from and tat you intend to play on release pre-orders can be perfectly feasible especially when you consider regional pricing and promotional offers. The above are just a couple of examples from my own library. Perhaps a better one would have been the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster. My pre-order price was 25% lower than the current historical low.

Pre-order prices are mostly cheaper than the day-1 price. But you're taking a risk, what if it's a horrible port?
I am a huge fan of Alan Wake and I trust I would enjoy anything Remedy brings. I was lucky they didn't sell Quantum Break on Steam before, maybe I would pre-order that. Seeing how shitty the port is I'm happy I didn't.

If you're going to play day one and pre-ordering gives you a significantly lower price I'd say the chance of a bad port is worth a risk. Arkham Knight scale cock-ups aren't the standard and in most cases any significant issues will be dealt with fairly quickly either by the devs or just unofficial fan patches.

NMS was always going to be a risky buy as even though the team weren't new to development it was something significantly different to what the'd done in the past. Pre-ordering a AAA sequel to an established franchise is another matter altogether. Sure it may end up being shite but you have much better idea of what you'll be getting.

You're kidding right? Being hype is... pretty awesome. Yeah, realistically we shouldn't, but we all get excited, why is it so bad to go with the flow and to LET yourself be excited?
Some of my greatest gaming moments have come from being hype. A'la midnight release, hooked on coffee and playing it til the early hours of the morning. You get so many experiences from being hype and for me, there's nothing better in gaming culture.

You're right, but false promises is the new trend in video game development. Half of AAA titles released are nothing but disappointment recently. Even if you are absolutely sure the game and the developer are trustworthy.
I hope to relive the golden days of gaming again with no DLC and pre-order and only expansion packs.

I try not to hype anymore because I don't have the money to buy games at release :)

I agree it wasn't a good game, it was hacker-friendly, terrible multiplayer, a short storyline with not much gameplay, and overall it contained many game-breaking glitches. But it sold well and still had an average review rating. That's why they are making a new part.
People want it because it seems promising, and without glitches and hackers and with an improved gameplay it's actually an outstanding game.

Maybe CIV VI? But who knows, maybe they go for the BE route again. 60 bucks, with the half content cut out, then resold as DLC for another 40.

I'm not hyped, but I'm pretty excited about Civilization VI and Oriental Empires. Actually I'm kind of hyped for the next DLC for Total War: Warhammer (the Grim and the Grave DLC) which releases this thursday (actually, I'm kind of excited for all DLC that will come out for that game).

Dishonored 2 of course. I hope it will be at least as good as the first one :)

Psychonauts 2. Even though Double Fine Productions fucked up a bunch of times and it's hard to trust them right now, I've wanted to play the sequel for Psychonauts since I was a child.

I had no idea Psychonauts was getting a sequel! =O When is it slated to come out?

I am talking about announced games, so no HL3.
Personally I am mostly looking forward to see Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 being released, hopefully with an improved multiplayer and a longer storyline than part 2.
I will probably also buy Civilization VI and the silly indie game called Totally Accurate Battle Simulator when they come out.
What games are you hyped for?
