I know that if the giveaway is for, say, a GOTY edition and you receive a regular edition, most people would mark as not received.

But what about when the gift is for a regular edition and instead you receive a GOTY edition? Would some of you still mark "not received"? If so, why?

In fact, if I were to receive a regular edition instead of GOTY, I would probably still mark it as received. I know they gain some contrib value they don't deserve, but they're still giving away a game. Especially if you've activated the key/gift already. Imagine a guy getting banned over the 5 contrib value he gained after he gave away a $30 game that you activated.

So why mark not received?

If rules are rules then should we mark as not received for a GOTY edition in a non-GOTY giveaway?

Because we only care to make sure we weren't personally cheated. I know it's not pure rationality, but it's just how humans work.

You have to get at least what is stated on the giveaway. If you don't and mark it as received, you both are incurring into feedback fraud

However I would mark as received Non-GOTY editions no longer purchasable, such as Batman AC.

Most games that are GOTY are in a bundle-type style where it includes the base game and then the DLC as separate entries. This makes it easier to sell and easier to understand, as you can view them. There are games that don't follow this way and I suppose if they're not listed since they're cosmetic, then it would be impossible to know. Some games simply do not have a proper placement in the list of possible giveaways to create and have to be listed as something a bit different. If I received a normal version when I was meant to receive the GOTY edition I might mark it as not received solely due to not wanting a suspension if someone were to check my profile for the DLC/other goodies in the GOTY edition. I'd probably talk to support about it if such a situation were to arise.

If I won GOTY and received the lesser version of the game I would discuss it with the game creator and then possibly mark as received. If I entered for the lesser version and received GOTY I give the man a massive thanks and mark it as received :)

If I won a GOTY edition and got the non-GOTY, I'd probably give it back to the creator or not activate it and mark as not received. I wouldn't like to have to purchase all the DLC to bring a game up to the GOTY edition. If I got a GOTY from a non-GOTY giveaway, I'd thank the creator and mark as received, unless they made an honest mistake in which case I'd accept a non-GOTY from them instead.

True if you've already activated it. If it was a key and I'd activated it without knowing it was not GOTY then I would mark as not received unless the creator did something to remedy the situation. The game given should match the giveaway.

You're told you're getting the base game + DLC, yet you only receive the base game, obviously you did not receive what you were supposed to.
You're told you're getting the base game, yet you receive the base game + DLC, you did receive what you were supposed to and a bonus as well.

Rules are rules, not suggestions. If you do not mark the giveaway accordingly, then you and the creator are risking a potential suspension or banning.

I didn't think the receiver could be suspended for marking it as received. Wow. So you can't be kind and say "meh I still received a free game from this generous dude" and mark as received? Kinda sucks.

No, because people can see you don't have what you are supposed to. They don't know you did that, they will think you didn't activate a prize. Make sense?

Couldn't the person who received the gift notify support? The rule is that the giveaway is supposed to be completed within 7 days, which includes activating. If something happens but the person receiving the gift is satisfied with how the giver resolved it (perhaps by buying the DLC separately or giving something else of equal value), or a delay happens in the resolution (like Amazon did provide an incorrect key) that would seem to make the most sense so people are not punished by an honest mistake.

Why wouldn't you be suspended? It isn't your decision to make as the rules are rules.

He broke the rules by not listing the correct game and you broke the rules by not marking the giveaway as 'not received'.

Yeah, some people try to scam that way with privates and expensive titles. But since we can see the wins at the bottom of the main page, people tend to notice.

One option I got less and would be upset while the other option has bonuses and would make me pretty happy. Pretty clear cut to me /shrug

It's you getting fucked over vs you getting extra goodies you didn't expect. Very egoistic, but that's how nature works according to my model.

Well it's not really fucked over if you don't get some of the DLC for a game but you get the game. You're still receiving a gift. Personally I wouldn't mind not getting the DLC.

What if its something like Borderlands where the DLC cost just as much as the base game + DLC?

And Train Simulator... I guess it might depend on the game and the DLC value. Still I'd probably just decide "meh he DID give away a free game on the internet..." and mark as received.

If I enter for a GOTY edition...and got the regular I would message that person and see why and then take proper action based on the response I get.

If its something like "So what lol, deal with it" I will mark it as not received, if he is like "Oh **** my mistake", and tried to remedy the situation or if we came to an understanding I would mark it as received.

It depends.

That's pretty much how I feel about the issue. If the place that they got it from gave them the wrong key I'd let 'em know what happened, and see if we could work something out. But if I contacted the gifter and was told that I should just deal with it, I'd mark the giveaway as being not received. And I might even send in a report on them if they're too terribly rude.

I don't like smartasses who think they're gaming the system. If after contacting them I found out it's deliberate and intentional, I'd probably report them. If it's an honest mistake, I can live with it, and be grateful for a free game.

I've ran into situations in which Amazon has given the wrong key to people, so it is most definitely not the fault of the giveaway maker that the key didn't activate the correct game. In that case, I do not think it's fair to give a "not received"

The winner would not know that and neither would the giveaway maker. Winner should mark it as not received because most likely the maker knew it was not the right game and contact the maker to try to get what was advertised. If the maker gave the key that Amazon gave him, he should contact Amazon and request a new key and then give that key to the winner (if Amazon gives him a new one). If Amazon didn't give him a new key then he should contact the Steamgift support, explain the situation and see if they could remove the negative rep against his account my removing the giveaway all together.

If the game didn't match the description, I think the first thing to do should be to contact the gifter.

If the gifter made a mistake, and didn't actually have the other version of the game to swap for the gifted one, I'd probably contact support and see if they could upgrade the giveaway to the GOTY version (or downgrade to regular per your original example).

The person have to at least give you what the giveaway advertised. If it happens to be more, it is still at least what the giveaway advertised. If it less however, then it is less than advertised and thus should be marked as not received.

In the maybe one or two cases where what I was giving was more than what was actually in the giveaway title I just stated in the giveaway description. I think the only case would be Binding of Isaac + Wrath of the Lamb. Can't make it BoI collection because there's no soundtrack, so I just labelled it BoI and specified that it included WotL. So yeah, I think there's nothing wrong with giving away more, but it's probably easiest for all involve if you're up front about it. Hopefully the recipient would be honest and make sure they sent the right thing but it's easiest if the sender makes that clear ahead of time.

If I got a key that didn't match the description, I would contact the gifter, even if this error is in my favor. The gifter might have made an honest mistake and did not intend to give this away.

If this site wants to ban the gifter for giving away a GOTY key instead of the base game, I would look down upon the site and those who reported the gifter. Gifting MORE than stated should not be against the rules here.

If the giver gave me a base key instead of GOTY, I would still contact him. If I didn't have the game yet, I would probably still mark it as delivered. I would still let the site staff know, just in case this is a recurring thing with this gifter.

Rules are rules, and the gifter did not follow the rules. Someone out there will abuse this repeatedly if this sort of thing is common yet unpunished.

Giving away the GOTY rather than the base game could be a deliberate attempt to "play the system" if the GOTY version is is a bundle game.

As you say though, contacting the gifter is the first step.

You're talking about Warhammer Dawn of War, aren't you? I think the case there is that the GOTY edition cost you nothing and counts as a bundled game, but the non-GOTY edition is still "full price". So pretending it's the base edition then sending a GOTY (or gold or whatever it's called) key is trying to cheat the contributor system.

Good point here. Doing this on purpose is trying to cheat the system.

On another matter, I don't see why we should care if a key came from a bundle or not. A 30 dollar game sold for 5 dollars is still worth 30 dollars. I'm still happy to get a 59.99 USD copy of Skyrim (haven't yet) even if the purchaser only paid 14.99 USD.

This is a valid point. That's a big no-no for games that are clearly bundle work-arounds. That earns you a report for support and a click of the 'report giveaway' button IMO.

Dawn of War GOTY edition is the base edition. Besides, as far as I know the base editions of games in bundles are considered bundle games even if the bundle provided a single key for a more complete version.

unless you're some uptight loser, you won't care if you get goty version when you won non-goty.

only scenario when i wouldn't accept it is if he made 2 giveaways, one non-goty and one goty.
