So, Morrowind looks really awesome, but I'm strapped for cash! I planned on getting it, but didn't know if it would be worth it. My low-end laptop can't run many games so I'd rather get this than Skyrim. Any input is appreciated!

Define "it"?
$2 million - I'm gonna say no.
$2 - depends on many factors.
A trade for Skyrim - most likely.
A trade for Bad Rats - debateable.

So I ask again, define "it" in specific terms.

Well, is it worth purchasing if it would take me a while to save up for it?

Define "a while"...2 hours, 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months, 2 years, 2 decades? People have different definitions of such phrases.

Of course if it takes 2 hours to save the $5 it costs, do it now. If it takes 2 years, no, not worth it.

Well, Morrowind currently costs $20, so about 2 months.

Wait for a sale then like others have said. It will come down to $5 then. I had the base vanilla game boxed but wanted the goty which I got in a previous Steam sale.
It is worth $20 but these days I rarely buy any games online without at least a 50% off sale but often wait for 75% off.

It's well worth getting, but buy it next time it's on sale. Don't pay full price unless you're in a crazy hurry to purchase!

Perhaps you won't be so strapped for cash by the time it next gets discounted :)

YES! In my opinion, and many people I deal with, Morrowind is actually better than Skyrim in some ways. It just feels right, it's cool, and i HIGHLY recommend the game, so I suggest you get it.

Depends... it's extremely archaic - fighting system is awful, quest and dialogue system is a mess and there is A LOT of text to read (almost all the dialogues are text only - very few have voice acting).

If you don't mind it and you're planning on spending a lot of time doing sidequests - then sure, get it. But if you're hoping for more straightforward experience - go either with Witcher (although this has almost requirements of Oblivion - another game from TES series, that fixes most of archaic bullcrap) or Gothic (1 or 2).

the archaic fighting system and the walls of text is the entire reason I decided to noy play morrowind at all, I have played skyrim a bit, but had to return the discs to a friend so never finished it(and if I were to return I would want dawnguard/the other content one(dragonborn right?))

Have oblivion on disc, no dlc though, tossed it into my backlog for while I hope to win a steam version with the DLC >>

I like it much better than Oblivion. I haven't played Skyrim though. It's huge, especially if you expand it with mods. It has a large amount of fan-content.

It's a fantastic ten year old game. The mod collection which people have mentioned make it look a lot nicer, but the mod probably wouldn't run at all on a low-end laptop. :(

Also, not everyone is willing to play old games. You'll be fighting the user interface as much as the monsters, at least in the beginning. My suggestion is save your money and wait for a sale. Good luck! :)

Wow, didn't know it was still retailing for $20 - I happen to have the original box release, the expansions, the GOTY box release w/ expansions (think it all came in a bundle), the Steam GOTY release, and another digital GOTY release (got a second digital one by accident) - and I'm not mad...

No not at all... It's only the worst Elder Scrolls game ever created... I wish I never bought it, I will never play it because the graphics suck, the combat is lame and slow, and there is no voice acting... Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go play Call of Duty Black Ops 2, the greatest game ever created...

So, here is the more serious comment... Yes, it is totally worth it... BUT... I still wouldn't pay full price... It's not that it's not worth it, it's just I hate paying full price for anything (I got Morrowind GOTYE, Oblivion GOTYE Deluxe, Skyrim, Dwanguard, and Hearthfire for $53 so... ya...) so I suggest waiting... If you can't wait, then go ahead... The game is the older styled game like the combat is slow and even when it is a clear hit on the target, it can still miss because it's random. The dialog is mostly walls of text but some people like that and I didn't see it as much of a problem except when you accidentally skip a line or you get impatient... But I guess that's the same with Skyrim and their voice actors... But anyways... The graphics suck as of now, but then, it was top of the line and it was great. The main thing I don't like about Morrowind, is the character customization... It barely exists... You pick a head and that's about it... But if you went to my profile and saw that I had played 100+ hours of Skyrim, yet only an hour or two of Morrowind, it's because I actually started with Skyrim so I wasn't used to Morrowind's anything... So the game is actually a great game if you like storylines, but if you are in it for the combat then I'd go for Oblivion... While broken, the combat is still better in Oblivion... But ya it's worth it as long as you can stand walls of text, random chance combat, and poor graphics, then go for it.

Also, what are your system specs? I am using a Pentium Dual Core 2.1Ghz processor, and an Integrated Intel Graphics card (the worst combination other than anything made by apple), and I can run Oblivion fine on medium, if not high (I can't remember my settings). So if you have about the same as me you might even go and get Oblivion, and if money permits, get Morrowind too, and go get Morrowblivion... But if you can only get one or the other, I would go for whichever you think fits your style best...

Um, that's customizing the character's looks. As for customizing your character, with the ability to choose from 10 races, 21 pre-defined classes, plus the ability to create your own classes, I'd say character customization in Morrowind is exemplary.

Permalink

Okay, maybe I should have reworded... Character customization... What else do people talk about when they say this? Yes, the character DEVELOPMENT is great, as with most TES games... But it's the actual customization in the looks that's bad...
