So I've nearly finished reading the book and I have absolutely loved it, lots of reminiscing about old games I used to play and films I watch(ed) (yes I am that old) and made me want to do some giveaways. Anyone else read it and got opinions?

I found it by accident. And yes, it's surprisingly good book!

It was pretty good, but because of the insane amount of hype around it and people saying it was their favourite book of all-time...I was a bit disappointed. I thought it often felt like throwing out references for no reason, rather than incorporating it in conversations or referencing it for reasons OTHER than just to prove how much he knew. I also really disliked the romance/ending. Otherwise it was a fun book, just not as hype worthy imo as people made it sound. :)

Managed to avoid all hype so had no expectations, knew nothing of the book except the name when I got it.

That's good, I definitely think that's the way to go. I watch book related videos and follow book blogs etc. so everyone was talking about it for at least 6 months nonstop before I finally got to reading it. People were also saying that their parents, grandparents, etc. people who never usually read absolutely loved the book, so I was like good grief this book must be a masterpiece! haha I'm glad you really liked it though! I'm excited to see the film when it comes out, I think it will translate well on screen.

I heard they have Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow which is a really good choice. I think the reason the "older" generations enjoy it is because of nostalgia more than anything else, it does a very good job of evoking memories.

It's pretty poor writing, but certainly a fun read. I am really looking forward to Spielberg's adaptation, I think it will work much better as a film.

The writing reminded me of a James Patterson book, simple but engaging. Agree the film could be much better if they can get all the rights to the related films like Wargames

I enjoyed it at first since I'm a huge fan of the genre, but as I kept reading it started feeling more and more like a case of wish-fulfillment on the author's part and it began to grate on my nerves.

its pretty fun, im not that much of a 90's kid as i did grow up on a different culture but managed to get most of the refereces, my only nickpick with the book was that the characters were a bit too simple, the stereotypical hero, love interest, rival that becomes friend, guide father figure and evil evil guy.

I read Ready, Player One a while ago. I'm fairly certain I enjoyed it, but as I said, been a while. Maybe worth rereading. Or listen to the audiobook, read by wil wheaton.

Read it a couple of times, enjoyed it a couple of times. Might watch the film. Not quite in the same class as Snow Crash (Neal Stephenson if you've not heard of it) or Tad Williams' Otherland series, but still a fun read.

I'd probably advise Snow Crash first - it's a single book, where Otherland is a four book set. But I'd definitely recommend both of 'em :)

+1

Snow Crash is cyberpunk legend. But, my favorite by Stephenson is Diamond Age. He was a much better writer at that point; as if Dickens wrote a sci-fi

Something tells me I need to re-read that one (I'm certain I've read it before, have vague recollections of aspects of the synopsys, but then I've read and re-read so many sci-fi books over the years it might have slipped between't cracks... so many themes get used and re-used it can get a little jumbled up in my mind /grin)

But yeah, Snow Crash is one of the definitive Cyberpunk must-read books :) Along with Neuromancer (William Gibson), Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (P.K.Dick - seriously speaking, many people have seen one version or another of the film - the directors cut is the one to watch by the way, the narrated version is not so good - but many of those same people never read the original), and (in my opinion anyway) the Ware Tetralogy (Rudy Rucker). For generic Sci-Fi, if you want the heavy stuff, then Iain M. Banks work is well worth the effort (especially the stuff centred around The Culture), or Frank Herbert's Dune series (the first three books anyway).

I'd love to see an actual decent game made from any of these tbh - the closest I've seen yet is the Deus Ex series for style/content/gameplay and that's not even based on a particular literary franchise. I'd love to see a version of Blade Runner done with Human Revolution class graphics and gameplay (I know, you could make a case that Deus Ex is a Blade Runner type game without the replicants, but it's not quite there for me), or a Mass Effect type of game done in the Culture universe. Hell, a decent 4X space game based on the Culture universe'd be interesting - every time I play something like Galactic Civ or Sins of a Solar Empire I end up trying to create The Culture but there's just something that doesn't quite work with 'em ;)

Anyhoo... not to derail the original thread too much... am gonna go do some more reading :) At least until I win something again...

Or 8 set if you're from Sweden, don't know why they split each book up here. Read it once in Swedish, then once in English. Really awesome series, in my top 5 for sure.

I am planning on reading the other book of him "Armada" I think it's called, there is a lot of hype for RPO but when you avoid that, is a pretty awesome book, although it gets pretty cliche for a while ^^

I've listened to the Ready Player One audio book a long time ago. I really enjoyed it; I think I listened right from beginning to end without a break haha. I'm actually a bit young for a lot of the references, but I enjoyed it regardless. :)
