So I just bought Dead Island from GmG for 15 euros and got a key in my e-mail. When I tried to activate it, it said, that it was not available in my country. So, is that it? Did I just spend 15 euros for a "not available" message?
Have any of you had similar problems?

you need to check these things before you buy them! The only option normally would be to use a vpn, but tbh I don't know how that would work on steam since your settings will clearly have you listed as from somewhere else.

This is against the TOS, and can/will get your steam account banned.

Contact GMG Support

Hum.

If you bought it from GMG totally legally - that is, without VPN or other tricks - then take a screenshot of the error message and email their support. They sold it to you, so they should either give you a refund, or give you a key that works. I know the Dead Island keys are Region Locked, so it may be you got a key meant for the US instead of Europe.

I tried this for a similar situation. I bought Saints Row 3 and the Season pass from them around a month ago and it comes up a "duplicate". After contacting them and sending screenshots they told me I can't get a refund and that I need to contact Valve because the key needs to be activated on their side, which makes no sense. I live in California, I should have no problems with any region locks on games.

Did you get a working game and season pass?

I'm still waiting for a response from Valve it's been 2 weeks.

"I live in California, I should have no problems with any region locks on games."
Except if the keys given were EU keys.

Also, darkdude8's question.

A duplicate key has absolutely nothing to do with region locking

I would really advise against using any sort of VPN/IP changer to activate the game on Steam, you run the risk of being banned.

I would request a refund from GMG for the game.

It's not worth losing your Steam account for a 15 Euro game, especially Dead Island.

How about you go wait until you go on holiday and then activate the game there (if it is not locked in that region)
That wouldn't be VPN but I'm not sure if you that way you could play the game in your country. Or maybe you have someone reliable living in another country and you give him your password and he can activate the game for you

Valve doesn't care if you "go on vacation" to activate games... If they did then no one would get in trouble for using VPN's as they would just say they were actually in that country when they activated the game. o_O

The guy just needs to get a refund and/or find a site that sells keys for his country.

Well a several hundred kilometer instantaneous traveling vacation might be a bit suspicious don't you think? :-P

But what If you went really on vacation and you activated the game there?
Would steam post any trouble?? I'm just curious about it.
and who says if tomorrow he doesn't have a plane trip scheduled to go on another continent/country etc.
He may even return the same day who knows

I'd also advice against using vpn/similar, as you can/will get your steam account banned.
Instead, contact GMG's customer support. Ask if there's anything they/you can do. If they tell you that there's nothing to do, ask for a refund.
Alternatively, see if you can find out which region it's locked to, and trade with someone from that region. You probably won't get DI, but if you can't get a refund, you can at least get a game that's close to the same value.

I just noticed his "won" games...

He's a regifter...

It's like these people want to be caught, they always draw so much attention to themselves... o_O

I'm sorry, but if you are referring to the indie gala 9 that I won and the games that I have given away...they are two totally different bundles. We have a forum in my country in which people post codes for the games from the bundles that they don't want/need, it's just first come, first serve. And we can do whatever we want with the codes after. I hope this clarifies that. I am sorry if I came off as a regifter.

How do you figure? o_O

I have IG9 as well and the games you gave away were in fact in IG9 and you only have one game from IG9 actually activated in your library...

Yes, the ones that are not activated are in my e-mail(will maybe try them sometime later) and the ones I gave away are not from that IG9.
I am really sorry it looks like I regifted the thing, I thought about it also, when I was making the giveaways.but I really didn't regift them. I don't want to violate the ToS in any way and just want to be a part of the community and contribute more in the future when i'm able to.

If you want to try them later, leave them on your library and then install them whenever you want, but you have to activate the games

Site guidelines clearly state "You must redeem the game on the account you entered with, and may not trade it to others." There's no reason to leave any keys you've received inactive.

Straight from the FAQ/Rules and Guidelines:

  • The submitter and winner(s) of the giveaway have seven (7) days to complete the gifting process. This includes the activation of the gift on the Steam account of the winner.

See it's the "maybe try them sometime later" part that's against the rules of this site.

I gave the key to my friend to try. He is in UK ( i'm in Denmark atm. it didn't work for me here) and it worked just fine for him. He said that maybe we could try gifting it. I.e - he would buy it on his steam account as a gift and send it to me so I could activate it and we could play together.
Do you think that would work or it would also be region locked?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If your key that didn't work for you worked for him, then him buying a steam copy and gifting it to you likely won't work. It'll be the same regional version that was locked against you.

Not necessarily. Not sure how GMG works for trans-Atlantic stuff, but since it's a U.S. based company it seems plausible that they gave him a NA key. Dead Island purchased in the UK from a different vendor may very well have different restrictions - to my knowledge there isn't a federal ban/restriction on these games in Denmark (like you see in Germany)

If he gifts it directly after purchase, I believe it will work, don't take my word for it though.

Use a VPN, I bought Dead Island from Amazon almost a year ago and I said the same. I used a VPN and haven't been banned yet, so it's chill.
