So I heard from a friend that you can supposedly use retail CDkeys to download your game via Steam, so long as Steam actually sells the game.

So I whipped out my copies of Q3A and Q4 and entered the keys via Games --> Activate a product on Steam. It told me I had an invalid key.

Was he wrong? Do retail CD keys not work on Steam? Am I entering it in the wrong place? Does this not apply to old ass games like these two Quake titles?

Thanks for the help.

Google "Steam Retail" and you'll see a list of all games that Steam supports that can be added on steam account and were not purchased on steam. Cheers

They are too old. It works only with some of the games. I have COD4 and I'm unable to activate it too. There was a website with info, which retail keys you can activate on steam, but I can't remember it now. If I manage to find it, I'll post.
