it was a mistake and they are taking the keys back
Dear Humble Store customer,

Recently, you were able to pick up a free key for Fractured Lands from the Humble Store. We're very sorry, but this was actually a mistake due to some technical problems on our end.

If you received a key while Fractured Lands was set at a 100% discount, you'll still be able to play the game until 1 p.m. Pacific time on Sunday, November 11, 2018. At that time, the key will be revoked and you'll no longer be able to access the game.

Fractured Lands will be on sale for 30% off from now until 10 a.m. PT on November 17, in case you would like to purchase it after all. We're very sorry that we weren't able to fulfill the 100% discount for you. Thank you for being the awesome customer that you are!

Best,

The Humble Store Team

Why did you even bother to get game with online 29 players (24h peak)?

It's okay, no humans are actually able to get the "free on HB" games anymore.

They'll probably get more keys from the devs when it turns out that all the keys were exhausted by bots and the number of actual people playing the game is still in the low 20s.
After all the whole point is to up those numbers and get buyers to pay for the game.

No, of course not, that would be totally silly. Since it still runs for about 2 days and 23 hours it is a 72 hour giveaway.

And it's already sold out. Great.

I'm not sure why Humble even bothers at this point. They clearly need to change something so that keys aren't exhausted in the first 15 minutes.

This is the fourth giveaway by Humble Bundle that they have run out of keys. It clearly is by design! And it is making Humble Bundle appear far less classy and reliable.

They wouldn't intentionally sabotage their own operation. More likely, it's the same group that farmed multiple copies of the other free games they've offered recently.

but few months back, even with groups getting a lot of keys, they'd still have keys for at least 47 of an 48 hour giveaway... now they release 72 hours giveaways and the keys are exhausted in 15 minutes?

More bots than last time? Faster? Able to get more keys?

Regardless, what I stated still stands. They wouldn't intentionally sabotage their own operation. That simply makes no sense.

They even suddenly stop the giveaway and now the game is on sale.

Looks like it may have been a mistake on HB's part, and they had to remove the giveaway.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Maybe. Since each key has to be claimed by a separate account, it seems unlikely that thousands of accounts have been created for this purpose. And Humble Bundle could likely determine a lot of the fake accounts. Key farming surely affects things, but I don't see how it could cause keys to be exhausted so quickly unless there are multiple groups grabbing thousands of keys each. Do you have a link to any articles or discussions about this that has actual facts and evidence? Would love to understand just what is going on with key farming.

All you need to do is look for their most recent giveaways here on the forums (that ended up being resold on other sites). I'm going to assume perhaps you missed those threads. (Edit: Slay.one and Glass Masquerade were the games from the stamp-collecting event they hosted).

By the same token, I could request that you provide proof that "this is clearly by design".

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I wasn't trying to put you on the spot. And the 'by design' is my opinion. Things have clearly changed in recent time, and it is either due to how Humble Bundle is choosing to handle things, or it is caused by abuse. Since I believe it is by choices made by Humble Bundle, I was wanting to understand why you believe abuse is the cause. There have been people re-selling or making giveaways of free games for years, yet it is just recently that keys have regularly been becoming exhausted far too quickly. So, I wanted to see where you believe mass key farming is a valid consideration. If it is, something needs to be done about it. If it's not, then Humble Bundle needs to change how they are doing things. Keys being used for giveaways on SteamGifts or IndieGala (and others), or being sold of G2A or Kinguin (and others) doesn't seem to be vast enough to be the cause since this has been going on for years. If you do have evidence of mass key farming by one or more groups, or evidence of much higher giveaways or re-selling than usual, I would appreciate seeing it. Thanks.

Found one of the threads at least. I don't have the time to go through it all again, but you'll get the gist checking the last few pages. There was another giveaway for Meadow recently that suffered the same fate. That may have been in the second week of the stamp-collecting thing. Couldn't find the thread for that (but I didn't look very hard, either). I'm weary and my memory is failing me at the moment.

They do need to change how the giveaways are accessed, since right now they are easily abused.

Agreed but it works for them since it attracts people to the site and the devs are probably paying them to advertise the game. The devs are probably hoping for you know... people to play the game so that buyers buy the game but IGN doesn't care so much about that

Even when they're giving away free Kingdom Come Deliverance, there's moaning from those who can't get it ;)

People need something to complain about. It makes everything else in their lives seem alright, I guess.
Most have no intention of playing the game, so the keys will just end up another +1 and do the devs no good anyway. It'll end up F2P before long, and still no one will play it.

All true I'm afraid.
I don't get all those multiplayer only games. Are they all hoping to be the next CSGO or PUBG? Or are they just hoping to get rich off micro-transactions and too lazy to create single player campaigns on top of the MP arena?

grumbling about it here

maybe "here" is the word.
i mean, i feel like this is "something" new for HB... not that new for IGN.

i'm really just speculating, here. still "something" strange... like "marketing weird practices" or something like that...

I like to assume that what Humble said shortly after their acquisition by IGN is true - that they would continue on as they always have, and that IGN doesn't have much of a hand in their business practices. Obviously, they've made some mistakes, but it's not something entirely new since IGN bought them. Seems to me that IGN is more of a safety net for them than anything; having IGN as a financial backer to bail them out should things falter was a smart decision.

TLDR: I believe these mistakes are made by Humble, and IGN doesn't have as much to do with them as we might believe.

Whoa... By horrible i wasn't reffering only to recently 10x failed freebies lately , but for many other things like last monthly,i found it horrible it was the worst montly they ever made , Early unlocks were OK I am happy with them but reveals oh boy... Also lack of regular bundles , there used to be at least 1-2 per week but now barely 1 in 2 weeks and they were just repeats, every single regular bundle had included a game that was already in monthly it all went downhill since IGN took them.

Looks like this was likely a mistake

1) Matches free weekend (not free to keep) on Steam
2) According to sources, they didn't inform their partners of this giveaway like they normally do.
3) There were very few keys

And now it's gone.
