When I was young, I used to go with my dad to computer fairs. You can still find some today, but back then... that was the internet. You would go and pay for admission in a gymnasium and browse the stalls... finding out about new tech, talk with IT people, and Turks who'd resell old computer parts or pirates games. I remember my dad would buy these 100+ games CD, because... you know.... more games for less cash. Most, if not all the games were either shareware or demos... and most sucked; but I had a riot with them because I didn't know any better. For every gem demo, like Quarrentine... (post-appocolyptic taxi driving game where it was legal to murder at certain hours of the day)... Battletech, One Must Fall, MK, ect.... There were 80 that either sucked, or just wouldn't start because DOS.

Kill stuff, manage inventory, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, watch cutscene. Go back to start.
That's what the game consists of, as far as I can remember. I don't enjoy that type of combat. I don't enjoy grinding XP. And while getting new loot is cool, it doesn't justify repeating content.
The story is sort of interesting, I think, but it gets buried under the mountain of repetitive gameplay. Never got past early Act III.
I still struggle to understand what people enjoy about going through the same encounter for the Nth time in the hope of finding that rare item with a 0.0X% chance of dropping.

You're right, that was cold, I apologize, but seriously you consider these games bad now? sure they've aged but every game you listed (short of Cossacks, I haven't played so i won't comment) was and Is to this day fantastic, & don't even get me started on mods! :D.

Age of Empires 2 is probably the single best RTS ever made.

Could be. But it's still based on what's now called the Starcraft style of gameplay - the real time strategy is replaced with pure real time tactics, and the strategy is moved outside normal gameplay, becoming pre-game planning and memorization of build sequences. It's a multiplayer/skirmish-focused series.
Really, there's no such thing as real time strategy. Strategizing requires time, and RTSs are too fast paced. I like to call the genre action-tactics instead, with a strategy metagame. A close cousin of MOBAs. And a type of gameplay I do not particularly enjoy.
Over time I've realized that I only ever played RTSs because there wasn't anything better around. What I really wanted to play were active pause, slow-paced games like the Paradox Dev Studio catalog, Knights of Honor, Tropico, Rollercoaster Tycoon, etc. So, not having access to the good stuff, I overestimated AoE as a kid.

Just a question, have you ever tried the Wargame series, Wargame: European Escalation or the new Wargame: AirLand Battle?
They're RTSes, but they have no base building, and they have an impressive scale from the tactical (terrain, lines of sight, morale, distance, physics etc) to the logistical (all units have seperately-tracked ammunition for every weapon system, as well as fuel), to the operational (the game has 800+ units, you custom-build "decks" of armies pre-game, with bonuses for themed decks like nationalities, unit types like Armored or Marine or Para, or time scales like pre-1975 units) to the strategic (in Wargame: EE, the campaign gives you a single, limited TO&E for the entire campaign; Wargame: ALB will have a more unscripted, dynamic campaign).
I think ALB's campaign will be roughly analogous to the Total War series, but more Cold War. Incidentally, what are your thoughts on that series? I think it's a pretty nice blend of strategy and tactics.

No, haven't tried Wargame yet. I was rather interested in it, but finding out that it uses StarForce put me off playing it entirely. I've since been told the DRM was removed in a patch, so if I can confirm that, I may get it at some point.
Total War is a series I've spent hundreds of hours enjoying, despite the somewhat unsatisfactory strategic campaign. It's a much better type of gameplay than mixing building and combat in one layer. It's greatest and unforgivable flaw is the total failure of pathfinding inside cities and on roads.

W:EE removed StarForce, and W:ALB uses Steamworks iirc.

Diablo 2 sucks so bad. I seriously don't understand why everyone loves it so much. Charms are the worst item in video game history.

Any of the Putt Putt series. I've had it with that purple car.

The fifth element ^^
Oh and probably Breed, I bought it because it was hyped, called the Halo Killer or something like that, but the AI and the singleplayer was crap, but the multiplayer through atmosphere flying was fun ;)

Xenon 2. In hindsight, for a shmup it's a disaster design-wise, but cool graphics, cool music and lack of better alternatives kept me playing anyway

Kingdom Under Fire. I have no idea why I'd even think that game was slightly even decent... stupid me.
