Just wanted to say good-bye to trading, and using the steam market. We had a good run, but waiting 3 days for a trade to go through and 15 days for a market listing? Yeah, i'm good.

So thanks everybody, I hope you all hate this new update too!

Gotta love all the fanboys on the Steam forums defending this latest move, the best ones are the "well respected" few that are now reduced to name calling and insinuating those without a smart phone are the sole reason for this as they're braindead. xD

The smartphone thing is stupid. I don't have one. I'm being punished because I cannot afford a smartphone. Awesome.

Yep. Am glad there's about a dozen of my smartphone-toting friends who're refusing to tie in to this crap. Wish more would do it, they'd back down like they did with the paid mods crap for Skyrim.

+1, i have a cel phone that fulfil my need to send a SMS or get some important call from my work, family and some friends. My only regret is i ca not play FALLOUT SHELTER (ilove Fallout).
I belived that this move from Valve is very discriminative, i understand why Valve (intentinally) excluded Win Phones from this app, but i fell like a colateral damage in the war between Valve and MS.

so you don't have to wait 15 days to sell if you have mobile authenticator right?

Yes. This only applies to those not using mobile authenticator.

Seriously annoying that you have to confirm every single one of your listings, no matter how inexpensive. Still going to do it, since I'd been using the system prior to this anyway, but uuuugh.

I know when selling cards you have to agree with T&Cs the first time for that time of purchase, then you only need to confirm the cost of the card after every listing.
But at least it isn't as bad as having to confirm using the Steam Guard on your mobile for every sale.

Edit: Nevermind, I was wrong. You do have to confirm on Steam Guard for every single sale. WTF!?

I sold 5000+ cards this weekend just to avoid this, and it was a total hassle without the verification.

I feel your pain. I truly do ....

This change is stupid and it completely breaks the Steam Community Market economy, also greatly hampering the overall Steam economy.
Why? It forces users to either use the app (or equivelent, not so straight-forward alternatives) to not have to wait 15 days to list an item.

The problem is that, even if you submit to that imposed restriction and start using the Authenticator, the great majority of the Market community won't, and placing items for sale 15 days before they are listed is greatly damaging: The item's value could fluctuate, dropping, causing the owner to lose profit or rise in value, causing the seller to sell for less than current value.

The ultimate result? Market activity will greatly drop, people will be discouraged to use it, and this will cause a huge, negative impact on the Steam economy that will reflect on all of the community.

/inb4 "Our market has been thriving more than ever with over 95% of users using the mobile authenticator!" Yeah. It's pretty much because we're being forced to. They pulled that bullshit line with the stream trade holds.

Where did you get that information? 95% using the Authenticator? Or you are making a "prediction"?

Many users will drop Market because they don't want to, or can't get an Authenticator

http://store.steampowered.com/news/20631/

"Since then, we've seen lots of users adopting the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator (two-factor authentication) for trade and market confirmations, and now roughly 95% of daily trades use the mobile authenticator, with trade volumes as high as ever. The authenticator is the best tool that users have to protect their accounts, and the fastest and most secure way to trade items."

I am impressed. I really didn't think the acceptance would be that high. This forceful move by Valve might actually work.
Thinking about it, they wouldn't have pushed it further with Market holds if they hadn't crunched the numbers for Authenticator usage. They wouldn't do that.

Even if the Steam economy remains intact, some people will be punished and forced to use a third party desktop Authenticator or Android emulator.

As the news article points out, it worked for Trades, but will it work for Market? It's actually a different community, some people rarely do item trades but frequently sell and buy via the Market. We'll see.

Very much this. I sold around 400++ cards and buy over 1k emotes and bg daily. Even if in turn there is less people selling card, the same could be said about background and emoticon. Eventually the cost for gem will raise and the balance will break.

In a nutshell, the demand will be the same, while the supply will definitely be lower. This certainly will cause every price of every item on the market to get higher. Especially for those drops from popular games, such as CS:GO.

I have a smartphone but I don't want to use the fucking app. Seriously, the chances of my phone being stolen or lost are higher than my steam account being hacked, so why bother? Sucks to wait for half a month though. PLUS confirm all the shitty spam emails from steam? Could this be any more dysfunctional? I am disappointed. :/

This is not enough, launching games and every page loaded through steam should also be confirmed via mobile app.
Still not enough.. In order to prevent bot and hack usage in games, every mouse and key click should require mobile app confirmation as well.

Okay you know what's really annoying? Even when I sell an item /from my phone/ I have to then go to ANOTHER page on the app to confirm it.

I don't expect this to last.
Steam will change it again if starts affecting their profits. And that seems likely to happen, since -- as many pointed out -- it's a hassle to dig out your phone every time you want to sell a card.

They should at least add a configuration option where authentication is only required for items costing $1.00 (or the equivalent in your local currency) or more. This would give card and small item sellers relief, but maintain the restriction for most other trading.

They also need to create an app for Windows Phone like yesterday. That to me is the worst aspect of this.

Lastly, they need to allow you to have authentication enabled on more than one device. I can have a backup phone that I just pull out and use for everything that works with Google Authenticator, Authy, and even VIP Access. Much simpler than the mess you normally have to deal with if your phone breaks or is lost.

Thankfully my dad had an old smartphone he doesnt use at home, as someone who uses the community market often waiting 15 days to sell something is ridiculous. I don't really mind having to confirm every single sell, sure it can be annoying but ill take that over the 15 days.

Wow, it was bad enough to confirm every 10th listing or so with the mobile authenticator, but this is just ridiculous. I wasn't sure if therre would be a big impact on the market, but this way it's pretty sure it will. Well played, Valve!

So now it's impossible for me to sell any cards during timed sales events. Thanks Valve. 2-3 days is a delay, 15 days is a f---ing joke.
Just another thing Valve has done that I hate. No love for them since Orange Box/Portal 2.

Even if you have the authenticator this is gonna be a major pain in the ass when I'm going to sell few hundred items during the next major sale.
Sincere thanks to the muppets who kept getting their accounts hijacked, and to our loving Valve führers.
