Just wanted to say good-bye to trading, and using the steam market. We had a good run, but waiting 3 days for a trade to go through and 15 days for a market listing? Yeah, i'm good.

So thanks everybody, I hope you all hate this new update too!

they are making people use unoffical 3rd party applications due this pure laziness. Why are they making this when they are visibly discriminating users without smartphones or with Windows p.

Android virtual machines and SMA emulators. Not everyone has or wants a smartphone. Some prefer phones over toys

My point still stands. Valve have done their homework and if a significant number of users were using "emulators", they would accomodate them. They seem to think there aren't, and I'm inclined to agree. A smartphone is affordable, and unbelievably convenient. Any serious trader would understand that.

Do you seriously not see a problem in forcing people to use specific hardware, thing that costs additional money?

Not everyone needs or wants a smartphone. Valve doesn't get to force people to use them, without providing a way to opt out for the people that don't have one. It's as simple as that. Many people don't have a use for a smartphone - they call, they sms, they mms, and nothing else. To those people smartphones are inconvenient because of the size, bloatware apps and hilariously short battery life.

All I'm going to say, is that if it was as easy as "providing a way to opt out for the people who don't have one", Valve would have done it. Their app doesn't generate any income, it's merely a tool to make things convenient/safer for people. I know you don't like smart phones, but try to be a little unbiased here and use some logic.

Oh, you sweer Summer child... this isn't about safety. This is about information and control. It's about letting Steam into your mobile devices.

Providing a way out is as simple as creating yet another checkbox in Steam Guard settings in your account.

SMA is both inconvenient (you have to confirm every.... single... listing.... individually!) and a security risk - smartphones are infinitely easier to hack than a Windows 7+ PC (for PC, you probably end up downloading something yourself... a smartphone can be hacked via SMS/MMS, and very easly via a public Wi-Fi, all without you ever doing anything), and when someone does hack it, you lose everything permanently, because Steam, SMA and your e-mail are conveniently in one vulnerable spot.

Valve don't force anything. And yes i almost see no problem. You cans till use market if you don't have a phone, just wait 15 days.
I think valve has done their research and they know that almost everyone has a smartphone and there always will be that 0,1% who are unhappy about new things.
I see only 2 problems:
Items which are cheap shouldn't require confirmations if you already have a mobile authenticator.
Windows phone users are left behind.

Valve don't force anything? The 15-days hold make the Market almost impossible to use. Good luck predicting item prices 15 days into future. Also, you completly miss out on selling Steam Sale cards, which are pretty high-value at the start. Every since cards were created, I was able to fund one cheap game from selling Steam Sale cards. Now I won't be able to sell them at all.

And no, more than 0.1% people don't have smartphones. Much more. And from the ones that do, there are people who don't have an iOS/Android smartphone. And then there are people who don't want to give Valve access to their phone and phone number, because we don't trust them, especially not after the December screw-up.

  1. Market is an optional thing, you don't need to use it at all.
  2. You still can use the market.
  3. Your argument about not giving valve your phone number is ridiculous. Again it's your choice, you're not forced into anything.
  4. It's like saying "stop releasing demanding games because my laptop can't handle it, not everyone has money on a good PC and not everyone needs one".
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

  1. Of course it is optional. Buying games is also optional. Multiplayer is optional. EVERYTHING on Steam is optional, mate.
  2. Not really, no. During Steam Sales it will be literally impossible.
  3. a) I am forced if I want to use the market b) I value my privacy. Amateurish accident in December proved that Valve can't be trusted with it
  4. Do you really not see a difference between technological progress vs having to buy new, separate hardware to use something you could use before? This isn't a new, more demanding thing you can get, this is a restriction put on your old thing.

How convenient of you to "miss" my point about Steam Sale cards...

And this is why "1984" is progressively becoming a reality.

And man, the whole SMA thing is just lazyness and excuse on Steam's part. 77k people/month are too stupid to maintain basic security, they get scammed, phished, and go to Steam for help. And they've had enough. Now, instead of having to help, they can just say "nope".

Also, getting a data-mining little helper onto people's phones is great for any company that does B2C business.

there is no such thing as "safe" every thing they will do - scammers will find a way to bypass.

so now they dont make anything safer just more ridiculous annoying for all the rest.

and they have plenty of reason to do that, any thing that they make you come back or "stay tuned" to steam platform - is benefit to them, they just wants to tie you tighter in there grip.

look at the steps:

  • steam was free.
  • then you had to pay for the ability of adding friends.
  • then you had to confirm trades on mail.
  • then they aggressively marketed phone app.
  • then they forced you to use it or get 1-3 days trade holds.
  • now they force you to use that or have additional 15 days hold on market! and as a bonus you need to confirm any one and one listing by hand.

this is not a security method - its an aggressive marketing in order to force us use STEAM exclusively.

I don't love this update, but there's no need to be salty about it. It further protects your inventory at the cost of being slightly less convenient to trade. Unless of course you don't have a smartphone (but then again everyone has a smartphone).

All they have to dd is make it optional. "You want to risk it, go ahead, we won't help you".

Well, it's not like they would help you anyway, since they said "no more returning inventories even after you were robbed by real-life thieves who put gun to your head, taken your jewelry and then ordered you to give them your $5000 TF2 hat"...

Both the seller and the buyer would have to be opted out for that to work out. So that means you're effectively splitting the market items into two categories and effectively screwing up the prices for everyone.

Valve already explained why they won't be returning items and it's primarily to do with duping them. It got so bad in CS:GO that they finally put their foot down and gave us what we wanted.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not sure why both would have to be opted out? Valve provides no protection for market deals now, so it doesn't matter if you're protected or not when you're making deals.

Besides, market is already split into two categories...

Carelessness is the reason we got this update in the first place:

  • Valve carelessly shows/stores your full email in your account.
  • Steam users carelessly store their passwords in their browser
  • The same users carelessly click a link that leads to malware without any protection on their end (anti-malware, script-blocker etc)

I bet you wouldn't care if GabeN visited you, giving you a reach-around while reading you the SSA and personally making sure that your account is safe, oh well

And btw,
Nobody cares about your comment or about you. Just delete the internet if you don't like it.

How many drama posts are there about that topic is kinda silly .

Its a security measure , and it is working in the right direction , at least imo , so that there is that additional step of security , even if you fuck up and comrpomise your account in some way .

Its taking less then 10 sec to confirm a trade / listing ... so complaining about it is kinda stupid .

I Guess adding an option for NO protection would be a thing , where you just op out of Any form of protection , and sell / trade your stuff freely ...
But without any option for help from steam support if you get scammed in any way shape or form .
Other then that , it just seem like an unnecessary drama to me tbh

Tens and thousands of transactions ... over the course of what time period ?

Ppl are getting scammed on a daily basis , and stuff like this is a step forward in the right direction to combat them .
And ensure some kinda safety for peoples accounts .

Yeah it may be mildly annoying that you need to confirm each and all transactions , but then again think this way .
What if your account gets hacked tomorrow , and you lose all your shit cause you ware so against the security measures ?
Then what ... ?

I already lost my account once few years ago , So im all in for any form of protection valve is offering .

That 10 seconds x 1000 , is just a minor nuisance , that people will get used to sooner or later .

I absolutely belief that 2FA benefits the community in the long rung. People are too cavelier with their security, and too quick to whine and complain when they face the consequences. I've got it on every account that uses it - Facebook, Google, my bank, etc. People complaining about this who have the ability to use mobile authentication are just being unreasonable.

That being said, I do realize that not everyone has Android or an iPhone. they really need to use the OTP standard to allow for the use of things like authy and Google authenticator. It's every bit as secure, and there's sufficient apps on every platform anyone would hope to use, including PCs themselves.

omg this is the most retarder update ever.
I've got about 450 cards in my inventory and i have to mobile auth EVERY 450 card?! even when you mass auth it takes about 2-3 sec each. Most cards are worthless so I'd never sell those now cause it's not worth spending time to do this

I understand forcing to use mobile auth and so on to make it safer, but auth every card?! it's beyond my imagination

Wow.... my interpretation of this was that you couldn't trade something bought immediately from steam or the community market for 15 days. I have a question for people who trade a lot:

  • I'm doing a trade with someone from a trading site.
  • I have mobile auth, he has 4 days to go for it to be on for 7 days.
  • The trade involves him sending me csgo keys, me sending him 1 dota 2 item via gift (cannot be traded).
  • Once I accept his trade offer to me (the keys), currently they will be locked for 15 days correct?
  • Can he revoke the trade and take back his keys?
  • I'll basically lose my item (since I gift it to him), and I have to wait for 15days to get the keys.

Is this trade safe or not? Or can he revoke the trade and take back his keys?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

He can cancel the trade during the 15 day hold-period. If he does that he will receive a 7 day trade ban ("cooldown") but the items will remain his. If it's not someone you completely trust, tell him you'll send the gift once the trade went through, that way you should be on the safe side.

few more things you can do before you trade

  • check his steamgifts profile
  • check his profile on steamrep.com
  • look at how old his steam account is and how many games he owns. People with good accounts are less likely to scam you.
  • if you're an experienced trader, see how many trader-friends you have in common. You'll start to recognize names once you've been in the trading world for some time
  • do NOT trust the comments on his Steam profile, those can be fake and he can delete all the negative one's

None of these are fail-proof, since even someone who has 2000 succesful trades can suddenly start scamming people, but if you use common sense you should be fine

Friendly reminder that both SteamDesktopAuthenticator and WinAuth support auto-accepting of steam confirmations.

And if you're not into any of those, my ASF has !2faok and AcceptConfirmationsPeriod as well, specially for people who don't want anything else to handle that (I like to have everything I need in my one app). And yes, you can import your classic 2FA authenticator and accept in both places.

And if you're using neither, then it's probably not that big issue for you, so keep accepting :3.
