I choose b too. Just because its free doesn't mean its a good giveaway. What if devs start giving out guest passes or demos? That's what limited betas are like

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But beta keys aren't public. Guest passes and demos are. See the difference? You aren't effected if they put up beta giveaways. The people entering them ARE effected. Essencially you're saying because you don't want it, no one else can. Like if I give everyone here a single scoop of free ice cream, you're crying in the corner saying no one can have ice cream because you want two scoops of free ice cream and one isn't good enough.

Guest passes only work if you got one, just like a beta only works if you got one. Its not any harder to give a beta key to someone than it give a guest pass

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Beta keys are essentially public. There are multiple places where you can easily obtain Chivalry and Guns of Icarus: Online. In fact, guest passes are much more private than beta keys ever are, considering that there are so few ways of getting them. That's why giving away a beta pass is like giving away a demo or a "free week" as in the case of Chivalry.

Essentially you're saying that just because something is free, it is good to give away. Like if I offer to give everyone a free guaranteed flu. Do you want it? Probably not.

did i say it affected my life ?? it messes up stats on the site, we went from 1.6 mil to over 2 mil on betas. and i will not enter, i dont fancy winning a game then having it taken off me 5 days later. why wont they give away full games, probally because they dont care about us and there money whores. Just look at ravaged for example. they did small giveaways but they were all for full game. so why dont medieval warfare dudes do the same, there still getting the advertissing from the site being on front page.

Do you think game development doesn't cost anything? That's it's only done by millionaires sitting in Corinthian leather chairs smoking cigars and counting wads of cash?

These aren't betas for EA out Activision, they're for small developers likely working out of their home in their free time.

Developer accounts aren't supposed to enter giveaways themselves, so the contributor value they gain is meaningless and doesn't affect anyone.

They are not supposed to enter giveaways, but some still did. I can't post names here without "calling out"

In that case, the problem would be that that account is breaking the rules, not what they gave away nor whether or not they received contrib value for it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They are allowed because they are the developers and it's advertised as beta. Also they aren't doing it for the contributor value.

The reason normal users can't give betas is that they are often misrepresented as the full game. Also people would get the contribution value for the full game, and that's not fair.

Right, but it seems like if he can read and tell that some developer giveaways are beta keys, I don't know why he wouldn't be able to with all of them. 1. Betas are NOT ALLOWED to be gifted in SteamGifts, Yet developers are? That's a bit unfair.

Im not saying giveaway a million copies, Giveaway somehting like 10-20.

If you really wanna contribute to the community you might aswell give something even if its small. Beta giveaways from devs are like loans. You dont really GET anything.

Specially since Chivalry has betas keys EVERYWHERE, You could google it right now, Go to a site. Press "Get Key" and start playing. No waiting for the giveaway here to finish.

-

Im just saying that they COULD be contributing to the community but they dont because they dont want to.

PS: Awesome game, I got the beta myself from one of those sites, I havent decided whether to buy this or War for the Roses though :O

  1. One reason beats aren't allowed (with exceptions such as DOTA2, btw) is that it would encourage people to grab free beta keys just to gift them on Steamgifts, so their contributor value goes up. This obviously does not apply to devs giving away their own games.

  2. So what if they use SG as free advertisement ? How does that affect you in any way ?

Well, Youre right in the first thing. its just kinda ehhh... To have certain people have "extra rights" but youre right.

About the 2nd one though, Its like saying I own Burger King. And I go to Africa and give everyone a piece of meat.
cmon, I have practically UNLIMITED burgers, Why not give the whole thing? Sure Im helping out & Its nice, But I could be doing MUCH MUCH MUCH better, I just dont WANT to.

People that giveaway games here only have 1/2 copies. Devs have unlimited. They could give a few if they really wanted to contribute.

Ofcourse, But then the game would be in Alpha stage. Chivalry is releasing in 5 days. The game right now is 100% complete, Its only about bug fixing now. (Its kinda impressive that Leveling and Weapon Acquiring is bugged THIS late in dev process)

They wont add anything else to the game, Theyll just fix the small things. Right now its not about feedback anymore because they cant change the product.

Its like you gotta make an essay on "Why cats suck" but you made one on "Its not their fault that they suck" You fucked up, And you only have 10mins left. You cant make a whole new essay or change ALOT from your first one, You can only make really small changes to make it fit the requirements.

-

What you said is always a possibility, Im not the devs and I dont know what theyre thinking by putting their beta on SG and all those other sites. But for me it seems unlikely that they want feedback, Their Alpha started months ago, Closed Beta WEEKS ago.

This beta started only like 2 weeks ago? Seems more like a advertisement move to me, A smart one at that if see it with a marketing standpoint, But maybe a little insulting from some other stand points.

Professional game devs make games. This costs them money. They want to sell the games, so they make money back. If they manage to make more money back than they put in, that's called 'profit'. It's what allows the game developers to pay for their bills. If they don't make enough profit to pay their bills, they can't afford to make more games. That's a sad thing. Nobody wants that. If they give away a bazillion of free games, they sell less games, making it more likely that the sad thing happens.
Yes, they could give away some games. Sure. Why not. But I can guarantee you that no matter how many they do give away, some whiney entitled b*tch is going to complain that what they're giving away for free is just not good enough, and they could, nay, should do more. Kinda like you do.

Comment has been collapsed.

Theres a difference between giving away a GAME and a BETA for a paid game.

Giving away a BETA is like giving away a DEMO, Maybe even worse. Sure you can try it, But after a bit you ahve to PAY to keep playing. In other words: You didnt contribute to the site.

You gave away something that cost you nothing in the hope that the people you gave that "taste" to will PAY you to get more. (For example: Dude gives you weed for free to "try it out" for the first time, Just so you like it and keep buying from him. Profit for him)

They could giveaway a few games like I said then they would have contributed. A few would ENJOY the game forever. And like you said, They gotta make profit so they cant giveaway THAT much, Thats why I said ~20 game orso. 10, 15, 20, 25? Not much. Not much loss for the devs and a HUGE contribution to the site.

Let the whiny bitches whine, But the people that won actually WON something :P

And... That means?

I know that Ive given away 4 games. Not awesome games really, I admit but 4 small games.

What have the devs given away? 750 demos of a game. You play them less than a week before theyre gone. (I think you only get to play 2 days after giveaway ends & Then the beta is over? IDK)

While the people that I gave away my games to are hopefully enjoying them now, After WEEKS of getting them, People that got into the Beta wont be able to play anymore in a few days unless they buy it.

Dont get me wrong, Its great that they do it, But they could do MUCH MUCH MUCH better. If they really wanted to contribute they would giveaway even just a few copies.

I'm quite sure that they pay SG for the advertisement, thus helping this site being online and running.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, IDK about that but it doesnt seem like that to me :P

I think of it this way: Dev makes a game & Tells cg that they want to giveaway a few copies in SteamGifts. This is good for SteamGifts coz now theres new games that are being given away and good for the devs coz they are kind of advertising their games.

Ofcourse cg could also be charging them a fee for doing this but it would seem unfair. Theyre just giving away a bunch of games. The "Advertisement" is not in the deal, Its just a cause of such a big contribution :P

-

Now, With that in mind maybe you could understand what I mean with the beta giveaways. With betas, Youre giving away ALOT of things, But things that can only be played for a small period of time. Youre not really contributing to anything, But youre still getting all the benefits from it.

TornBanner gave away 750 betas. 2Dawn gave away 50 GAMES. Both got the same "Benefits". Who do you think contributed more? I say 2Dawn.

Anyways, Someone mentioned that TornBanner said they would giveaway a few retail copies too? That wuld surely be nice (:

Now, this is just a guess, but my guess would be that those developers out to get some free advertising by talking to the admins and setting up a deal? They probably had to get some permission and maybe even paid some cash to help fund the websites continued existence. So if you look at the rules, it talks about WHITELIST for certain beta keys. Consider a developer to have a limited whitelist to gift beta keys. Well within the confines of the rules as currently structured. You're whole argument for not having beta keys is that the rules say no. So if they add in (except developer giveaways) into the rules, you're fine with it? If so, you're an idiot.

Considering you've tried to regift a prize, you should probably just shut the fuck up and be thankful that you're even able to access Steamgifts.

The only real issue I have with it is it counting towards these numbers: 161,558 Received Gifts / Received Gifts Valued at $2,141,102.32

Why? Unlike the other gifts on here these end up removed from the account and have an actual value of $0 (excepting ones that are beta+retail)
