My friends and I love local multiplayer - nothing beats the screams, smack talk and insane laughter that you get when people are in the same room playing good games. We have our usual cycle, but we're looking for something new.

I'm hoping to get a good list of fun local multiplayer games that are relatively simple to pick up, but have enough depth to be competitive. If you can, try to suggest something a bit more obscure - everyone already knows Goldeneye, Smash Bros., Mario Kart, and Halo are awesome.

They can be from any game console - oldies are still fun to play too, and we didn't have online back in those days, so lots to pick from :D

Real-time or turn-based, doesn't matter - but games tend to be much quicker and more intense when they're real-time. They're better for tournaments, like loser passes the controller-type games.

Here's our favourites:

  • Super Mario War (PC, freeware)
  • Nidhogg (PC)
  • Towerfall: Ascension (PC, PS4)
  • Samurai Gunn (PC)
  • Castle Crashers (X360, PS3, PC)
  • General Chaos (Sega Genesis)
  • Bushido Blade (Playstation)
  • Return Fire (3D0, Playstation, PC)
  • Team Buddies (Playstation)
  • Worms Armageddon (tons of different platforms)
  • Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament (Sega Genesis)
  • Puzzle Bobble 4 (Arcade)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (Arcade, SNES)
  • Windjammers (Arcade)
  • Outfoxies (Arcade)

Let's hear yours!

I've heard mixed reviews, some people are saying it's overly simple. Is it actually good?

it only uses 2 buttons. simple, cheap, and you get hours of local or online fun with friends.

Yea I love that one! Sort of reminds me of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (Sega Genesis)

N64 games...Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Turok: Rage Wars, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis.
Battleblock Theater (X360)
Diablo 3 (PS4/X360)

EDIT: Never played windjammers, but it reminded me of Super Dodgeball (NES)

Nice, thanks! Battleblock Theater looks interesting, coming to Steam soon too.

We had a Super Dodgeball kick a while back too, good game. If you think Windjammers looks interesting, I'd recommend the Crazy Power Disc series - it's the same premise with more super moves and better graphics. It's kind of rare though.

Heres some that my bro and I have been playing recently

Contra series, Metal Slug series, That one two-player touhou, Hero Siege, Starbound (he plays on his laptop, and I play on the tv), Trine 1 and 2 and Jamestown.

i'd recommend all, we've been having a blast the last few weekends with these games.

Contra/Metal Slug are must-plays, definitely. If you're into these, check out Gunstar Heroes and Sunset Riders (the SNES version).

Hero Siege looks cool, sort of like Gauntlet or Smash TV (both must-plays).

Got Jamestown in a HB way back, I'll have to give it a fair swing. Thanks for the recommendations!

Super Puzzle Fighter on PS1. That was one of my favorite multiplayer games before online because it's a silly game to begin with.

Soulcalibur games were pretty good.
Dynasty/Samurai warriors had some fun extra games. DW4 had one where you run around in the dark and try to kill each other, and SW Xtreme legends had some sort of wrestling type thing.

I enjoy most games you described in the OP. So heres a few of my recommendations:
Worms 4, Super Smash TV (snes), Mario Bros (the battle mode on SMB3 of allstars), Dungeon Defenders, Awesomenauts, Motor Rock (PC) / Rock n Roll Racing (SNES or Genesis), Balloon Kid (NES), De Blob (wii), Super Mario Strikers (both of 'em, even if you're not into soccer), Audiosurf

Hahah Balloon Kid :D What a beauty, like a deathmatch version of Joust. Never got around to Mario Strikers, but looks interesting - I liked Mario Golf and Tennis, so I'll give Soccer a fair shake.

check out this game.
its FREE.
Foiled!

A local two player fighting game centered around soul-theft and a simple yet deceptively deep dueling system. Think Super Smash Bros meets Nidhogg.
