Nah.

If you've made purchases in-game prior to the Steam Trading Card Beta, or if you purchased TF2 prior to the Free to Play Update, you'll have 4 or 5 drops available for these games.
You'll receive more card drops when you buy items in game, approximately one card drop for every $9 USD spent.

The problem is: you had to be 'premium' BEFORE the trading card beta got released. Buying an item now doesn't count.

I think it might be cheaper to just buy the cards at the community market

No, rumors says u had to do purchase in DOTA before card beta to get card drops. Maybe it's a bug, but new purchases dont give u any card drops.

I don't think it is a bug. I think it is there to stop people making a new steam account, getting DoTA 2 and TF 2 premiums with cheap purchases (and pick up DoTA 2 from the DoTA 2 dispenser bot) and then idling to get loads of cards.

You will only be able to earn DOTA2 cards if you had bought something from the DOTA store prior to the Beta.

If you go to your Badges page, you will see the list of games/cards to collect. If DOTA2 isn't on that page you won't be able to earn cards at this time.

FYI: Spectating/Watching DOTA games counts as game time and will earn you cards. You don't need to play if you don't like DOTA. Note: Idling in the lobby may not earn cards; I suggest spectating as I earned 4 cards from doing it.

Idling on title screen works for getting cards, I did it myself for all 4.

From the Steam FAQ:
What about free to play games like Team Fortress 2 or Dota 2?
Free to play games drop game cards based on your in-game purchasing history.

That sounds lame...

It sure looks like an incentive for people who were already buying items from these stores though.

EDIT that to, for every 9$ you can drop ANOTHER card. I haven't spent 36$ on DOTA2 and I still got all 4 cards. I have spent around 20-25 maybe.

Did you spend the stuff BEFORE the Trading Card Beta started? If you did, those are the initial 4 cards you get from the start (in fact, you could've spent $1 prior to the Trading Card Beta and still gotten 4 cards).

If you have bought anything from the dota store before the beta started, those are your initial cards. Any purchases made after the beta started will add to the amount for getting extra drops.

I guess you'll have to buy something on DOTA in-game store

Does anyone know if it has to be one large purchase, or two / three smaller ones parsed out? I don't want to drop large amounts on a game I've already invest a couple bucks into.
