I always felt that the amount needed to enter should be at the same value as the game.

100 bucks or 1000 for a 60 dollar game, or even a 5 dollar game seems a bit steep at times. Then theres the insane 2000 dollars

Personally, i rather there be some limit or guideline on the amount needed to enter.

What do you guys think?

Should it stay the same or have more realistic limits in accordance with the actual game value.

NOT TRYING TO COMPLAIN!!!!

Just wondering how you guys feel.

Or, you could just contribute a bunch, and never have to worry about it.

of course you can, but who has the money to donate 1000 bucks worth? Or even 100 bucks worth? Not all of us are made of money. I donated 40 bucks worth, but only because i had the spare cash

All i'm saying is i wish there were more realistic limits. Otherwise you might as well make it a private giveaway for the top 5 contributors.

But the thing is, as noted below in other posts, "It's their game, they can do what they want with it." (HSAR). We shouldn't limit people who are giving away games, I'm still amazed every day that this community keeps giving away new, old, and fantastic video games.

I guess that is true, but i always prefered the original way, of saving and then choosing what you can win. With the contributor system, some titles are just out of hand. I saw a 5 dollar game go for 2000 bucks.

No one entered it in the end.

Those giveaways are mainly there as a joke. Sometimes an inside jokes between a certain group of people.

There is. You can't put more than twice what you gave yourself.

Unless its been changed the upper limit is fixed at $2000. I wanted to make a $4000 FS giveaway for Pkeod but hes already got it (big surprise). :)

It could be considered an incentive or a reward to those who do contribute more.
Either way its just an entry requirement to a giveaway. Its really no different to people who post puzzle giveaways or mazes as those have entry requirements too. All of the $2000 giveaways I've seen have been for games that are frequently given away so you'll still have chances to win.

The 2000$ giveaways are isolated cases. Majority of them ask for a reasonable amount. Anywhere between 15-100$ is pretty much in everyone's price range since they've already spent far and above that amount on their own account already.

You dont have to donate 100 or 1000 at once. Check how long people with more than 100 or 1000 in donates have been SG users.

Why not? It's their game, they can do what they like with it, they can give it to who they want.

That is not how gifts and donations work.

Actually, they can decide who could apply or not for the gift. It's not different from private or group giveaways.

There is a limit. you can only set the contributor requirement at twice your own submission total. So if you've given away $20 of giveaways, you can only set a $40 dollar limit.

EDIT: You can go here http://www.steamgifts.com/create and see for yourself in the contributor section that it states: "Please note, the maximum amount you can enter above is twice the amount of your gifts contributed. Maximum allowed for your account, XXXX"

Good point. I think this is totally reasonable, as it is their game.

^ This. It's fine as it is. The person giving away the game can very weel decide to whom it wants to give it away. People are acting like they should have a right to each and every gifts. I've seen a $2 game for $1000 contributors as well as high-priced games for $0.01 or for everyone. The beauty of this is the gifter can decide to whom it wants to give the game he generously bought.

But isnt a private giveaway more effective then? Like a top 5 contibutors.

Anyway, the 2000dollar giveaways usually only have 1 or 2 entries.

A private giveaway might not be seen by whomever is eligible. Anyway those are isolated cases and most of the giveaways are asking for reasonable amounts.

People who don't contribute because they just can't, they won't start of course. Those who didn't contribute because they're greedy leechers might be tempted to give back. Playblink kinda forces your hand that way, if you don't contribute games or money to them you stay at level 1 and are left out of many of the best giveaways. Here we prefer to let gifters decide.

Permalink

I actually think its a good thing. It encourages the leechers and low contributors to contribute some more to potentially be on the top and actually get into a giveaway that you know that only 5 people max will enter.

Most of those $1000 giveaways don't really work that way. Why would anyone in their sane mind spend $1000 in order to be able to join a low-entry giveaway? These are a reward (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that), but hardly a motivation for "leechers" (man, I don't like that word...). On the other hand, $10, $50, those can actually be motivation for people to start contributing.

Well, I am competitive. So maybe my viewpoint can be taken as if this site is a competition. I would certainly spend $1000 bucks to enter low entry giveaways. You know why? Because I'll end up getting my moneys worth eventually. With all the low entry giveaways, I'm bound to win in shorter terms than lower contributors.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But if the plan, from the beginning, is to walk away with more than what you brought in, isn't it essentially the same as what is called "leeching"? Only with an initial investment, which you're planning to get back? :-)

100 bucks of contribution for a 60$ game, I think is ok.

I think it play out this way with the some contributors, some do just buy the stuff out rigth at full cost or on sale at a really good price like with Daily, Midweek, Weekend and best all time is Holiday Sale and then they Gift it away on rainy day or they Won a Gifts or they received a Gifts or it was Tradable or by some other means so it end up re-gifting here becuase they all ready have it or end up with multi extra copys.
I think this is totally reasonable to point, but it there game to give away any way they want so they can do what they want even if it is totally unreasonable contributors value so you just can't enter it that all, No big deal after all there are 100's of other gift game's here you can enter that are a ture gift without the expectation of contributors value.
I think it should be base on Ture valve to no more the 2x Contribution valve for a game let say it $60 to more then $120 not more that.
Sale game should base on there sale valve not there retail value.
All Re-gifting, Trade and so on should a 10% of retail value.

I really don't care. I may miss out on a few giveaways, but if we want to keep seeing giveaways, we should reward the people that contribute. I am only worried that there will be a flood of fake giveaways...

Why does it affect you? If someone wants to make a giveaway with a $2500 limit for the lulz, that's up to them, and I think the fact that they've given at least $1250 in game value back to the community places them beyond criticism for something that small. Most contributor giveaways are reasonable. If anything, it's too easy to pad the value of the gifts you've given.

Big limits are stupid. If someone can offer 1000$ of games, he has enough money to buy his own games alone without winning them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Complaining about big limits is stupid. If you have a total of 400+ giveaways, you can just choose from the ones that don't have big limits; you don't have enough points to enter all.

Also, winning is fun. Free stuff feels nice, and so does getting lucky.
