This must be a very, very, very stupid question, but do dota 2 players get beta keys to invite there friends? I'm just very curious on how people get like tons of dota 2 keys and give them away.

yes we do. Especially after summer 2012 people get 6+ keys every few weeks.

Felt like such an exclusive club back in Nov 2011 :D

^ this, basically. I'm not sure what really controls how many copies are given out to who, but we do extra invites occasionally (some more than others).

Yap, there was a wave of invites given by Valve, everyone with Dota 2 got 6 invites if I remember correctly. There are also keys given in big numbers from time to time by some fan sites.
