I played the game in English and thought the voice acting was fine. I guess just pick whichever language you're (more) fluent in; I strongly doubt that anything would be lost in translation if you don't pick the original script (especially since you can't find any info about it).

My default is always local language with subtitles. But especially if its originally in Japanese ... Japanese voice acting is just on a different level, I think in part because it's been a proper profession for decades.

Haven't played Automata yet, but I played quite loads of Replicant and did it in English, and it was really well done, haven't had any cringes at all. What's the original, I don't know.

I don't want to be like "obviously" but, it's Japanese since it's the country of origin.

Not really a spoiler ahead, but talks about character names and their emotions vs different versions, so keep that in mind before you beat me up.

"Localization
Localization for the English version was handled by 8-4, the same company which had localized of the original Nier.[56] According to Yoko, 8-4 changed elements of the script for each region, as some of the concepts in the Japanese script were difficult to understand if translated directly. The aim was to create a script that would appeal to players around the world.[57] As 8-4 had worked with Yoko before on Nier and Drakengard 3, they were familiar with his writing style and found it easy to ask clarifying questions during translation.[58] 8-4's biggest issue was writing the android characters; while ostensibly emotionless, they had distinctive personalities and much of the relationship between 2B and 9S revolved around emotion. While 9S was already written to be more emotive in Japanese, 2B had to be rewritten so she came off as "droll" rather than emotionless in English.[56]"

Not that it matters however, you just pick what you like. I haven't played it yet, but unless it has translations I'd be playing the English version, unless you speak Japanese and want to read, but I watch subbed anime.

Regarding Death Stranding I believe it had to do with the situation he was in at the time. "After a lengthy corporate conflict with Konami as a restricted subsidiary,[17][18] Kojima Productions closed in July 2015 and reformed as an independent video game developer and studio in December.[19][20] The same month, Hideo Kojima announced his partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment, at the time led by Andrew House, to make a new PlayStation game.[21]", after which they partnered with a Dutch studio. No matter how we look at it, all of a sudden all their support came from English speaking people, so it was probably easier to just release an English version first. Not sure if in the original script the main char was English or not but my guess is if he had the choice Japanese would've been the first release language, as it is for the Metal Gear Solid series for instance, for when he was working with Konami, or other games.

Haven't played Death Stranding tho so correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just reading the timestamps and news and situation on the wikis.

I wasn't trying to say they never got English development at any point during the making, I was just saying that they were firstly done or released in Japanese Most likely translations were added by a team as they went. Polygon has an entire article about this which I haven't read the whole thing but apparently there was a Konami Chicago team at the time. https://www.polygon.com/2019/7/18/20696081/metal-gear-solid-translation-japanese-english-jeremy-blaustein . I haven't looked into MGS2, but MGS1 came out in 1987 for the MSX2 after which it got a lot of ports. JPN got the NES in DEC 1987 and NA got the NES release in June 1988. Some Japanese releases came with English translations inside, for those who wanted to change language inside.

I don't think it would've been productive for them to develop it in English with a mainly Japanese team, compile, translate back to their home language then compile release, and half a year later release the NA version.

No, they weren't. They're always recorded in Japanese first. All the initial trailers were in Japanese, every single time (maybe except for the Phantom Pain, but Ground Zeroes debuted with a Japanese trailer). Also, David Hayter is completely a hire from the localisation team, not Kojima. Hayter had to always apply for the job for every game, until he didn't get it anymore for MGSV. Hayter said that himself dozens of times on podcsts, also that he only met Kojima once in his career. Akio Otsuka is the original Japanese voice actor for Snake, and he's like the Troy Baker of Japanese VA's. I've heard him in every thing, from Gundam to Ghost in the Shell, and hundreds of games.

This is like Bethesda's philosophy of development: release a broken game and let the fans finish it with mods. I loved Nier Automata, but from a technical side, it's terrible, looks like PS2 game and runs quite badly too. It boggles my mind how they could release game that needs two fan made mods just to be playable.

I bought it after they release official patch (I don't like to be forced to use mod, even if the mod works perfectly, like FAR)
have been played few hours and no problem so far, you should try it again

Regarding the OP question, I don't know the original, but I always pick japanese voice if possible.

played both games in english voice + subtitles and it was great. i prefer my anime, series or movies in original language with english subtitles (not my country's language) and if i miss something i can just rewind a few seconds. in games i always go for english voice + subtitles so i can focus more on the gameplay and what i'm listening to rather than always looking the subtitles not to miss anything.

I pretty much always prefer Japanese language options, but I also always use subtitles (even when in English).

I prefer playing in English first. It's good that I don't miss any dialogue, specially during cutscenes, so I can watch it without having to focus on the subtitles.

If you can understand Japanese then play it. If you are just gonna play with JP voices and subtitles then just play with English voice acting. There is somethings that are lost in translation but it's not that important to the story (From what I can remember the difference is mostly 2B's tone in interaction with 9S)

I usually prefer original language + subtiltes for almost anything, but both Nier-games are really great in english.

If I´d be more fluent in Japanese it would be different, but since I depend on subtitle-translation anyway, the great voiceacting makes this one of the rare cases where I prefer English over OV.
