The easiest way is to buy a bunch of bundles (Humble Bundle, Indiegala Bundle Stars Fantasoft, etc.). Check SG for announcements of free games from these various places, and claim a free key. Then farm CV and enter every giveaway you can, especially mass giveaways from devs. You can easily get to 1,000 games. And soon, it will take 5 minutes to load the Games tab on your profile. =)

it takes years if you buy games you want to play, if not with cheap bundles

Quite simple, I have poor self control and there has been too many bundles and freebies for the past few years.
Getting to 1k is easy, finding the time to play them all is the hard part.

anyway, when you get there is when you learn the usefulness of the hide function and you take out of view all the unavoidable crap...

I've got hundreds of games I got for free. Indiegala gives away some kind of trash every other week though I've now reached the point where I've got most of them, some games come with multiple entries, and bundles often have some extra games I'm not interested in originally I'd add to my library, nowadays I give that crap away
And then there's the situation when you can get 26 games for a buck, and after selling the cards I've got $3 steam wallet to spend on a game I actually want to buy, so I've got crap in my library in exchange for getting a hefty discount on a game I really want.

I got there getting games for free and trading spare free keys. Yeah, there are people who trade games for free games and they know it.

Why would ever want 1000 games? 90% of them will be card garbage you will never play anyway.

If you only care about the Game Count, and not actually playing them:

  • dozens of keys are only $.05 at DIG point shop and marketplace
  • games are $0.11 or less in the GoGo and Otaku bundles, less if you find a group buy
  • SteamGround wholesale is $0.04 and up, if you can manage one of their payment methods
  • IndieGala group buys are in the ~$0.10 per game range

EDIT: You "spent" $100 to join SG, you can easily reach 1000 Game Count for another $100 :P
