But isn't that interesting though? This is why I think achievements need to be well thought out or because I can't ever tell you the last time I felt good getting an achievement. Just relief that it's over. I felt good beating a game and getting the best ending possible cause it was a GOOD ENDING. Or as I mentioned earlier. I played through all six origins stories of dragon age origins and felt GREAT when it ended cause I felt like I developed 6 really unique characters and got the endings most suited to each of them. That felt great! Completing Spelunky? Fastest uninstall I ever did....and then they go and release Spelunky 2...great.

Spelunky took me 300+ hours to get 100%. The hardest for me was the no-gold, because of needing to avoid all of those flying specks of gold when stuff is accidentally blown up and all of the hidden nuggets in behind some visible barriers in the foreground. So I totally get it about that game. I am not a completionist though and so I don't go for many 100%, usually if I beat a game, then I move on, some exceptions, of course. (I am going to wait the 2 weeks for the PC release of Spelunky 2, even though I have toyed with buying it on PS4 for the last month, but finally decided against it.)

I'm still on the fence on buying it honestly. I know its gonna be great but I seriously don't want to go through that again. That's funny Speedlunky was the one that gave me the most trouble. I got it through sheer luck. Just had a good run that day. Low scorer was easier for me cause I'm generally a patient player.

Haha, I get it man, it's a heavy time/effort investment. I played Spelunky for a few hundred more hours after that, and still play it on and off now, so I know I am going to get my hours in the sequel. But yeah, I am sure there are going to be some really tough challenges ahead. Speedlunky I practiced a bunch and ultimately ran it through without too much difficulty, I ended up improving my score a few times after that too, just because I thought the speedrunning mentality completely changed the way you have to think about the game and so it felt like a totally new experience.

I hate the achievements that require friends because yeah, my friends don't have the same games as I do most of the time.
Also, I don't like switching from Xbox to Steam and realize that I have to get all the achievements again :(
And about a hard achievement, maybe SteamWorld Dig 2's The Impossible Dream (0.6% completion rate). For that one you have to complete the game in less than 4 hours, get every secret, never die outside challenges and get a lot of gold (which requires some farming too), all in the same run. It's not hard because it's difficult (you can do it on the easiest difficulty setting), but because it requires lots of careful planning and dedication. The best route to get the achievement also involves some sequence breaking to get to a farming spot as quickly as possible. I still have to get that achievement on Steam cause I just recently got the game again :P.

It was a countdown list on youtube showcasing some of the hardest achievements. If I find it again I'll send it over. There was a bad achievement where you had to earn like 50,000 points. Doesn't sound too bad just saying it but I hear its way easier said than done.

Yeah I gotta see if I can find it. Wonder if it was a youtube video or an article I read. Whichever the case yeah Space Rangers was on there. That's why I immediately traded that game. I wanted no part of that. This is why I don't care that people use S.A.M. These devs are ridiculous. I have a simpler method of dealing with impossible achievements though. I just hide the games from my library so I never see how much of a failure I am.

Yeah I know that's impossible. There's a couple of games I dropped actually that I couldn't get achievements for but not on steam so far. For example Gears of War series on XBox. I gave up even trying to get most of those and settled for what I could handle. If its too ridiculous and not enough info online to help me obtain it I typically move on. Yeah its all about having fun. I shouldn't forget that.

The "Seriously" achievements in every. single.gears.of.war.game.ever... and whatever the ones are for insane campaign (is a bitch doing it solo with their idiotic companion ai's). i think one of the "seriously" cheevos from the 360 era required something like 3 mil kills or some other ridiculously large number... which they lost / reset my progress on at somewhere north of 75%... was so pissed.
been playing a lot of gears 5 the last week or two and there are parts of the campaign (on insane) where you just die repeated sometimes 20+ times just to progress one small checkpoint. or maybe i just suck at these kind of games a lot more than i used to?

If I like the game enough, I'll give my best to get all the achievements; since I'm enjoying my time with it why not check out all that it has to offer? That has been long my attitude towards completionist style. But with getting closer to my 30s and with diminishing patience, time and energy, I started to struggle a lot with achieving %100s and getting platinums.
Recently for months upon months I've been trying to get all the achievements in MGS V but have been failing to do so miserably. Going from point A to B to C to D between the empty lands of Afghanistan and Africa, hitting the same enemy camp for the 500 time, killing the same enemy tank unit for the 100th and collecting animals and blueprints here and there just to tick artifical boxes in the never ending objective list has gotten to me. I was frustrated and uninstalled the game twice and reinstalled it subsequently because I didn't want to give up but last week I just couldn't take it anymore and decided to call it quits. And I don't think I'll be coming back to it this time, it's just way too tedious.
So, for me achievements that are tied to massive challanges are alright and I don't mind grinding that much. But when achievements require you to do the repetitive tasks for about 100 hours, I just can't handle it anymore. The tedium of it all is truly unsurpassed. And also achievements that have you grind online for hours, especially when said online has been dead for quite some time. AC Black Flag wanted you to reach Level 55 on multiplayer which took about 40-50 hours like 7 years ago. Good luck doing that nowadays.

You are right man some achievements are ridiculous. I'll be honest I've never actually done grindy achievements since I haven't played most of those games that had them. The only one I can think of is borderlands and torchlight 2 but both got dropped for multiplayer reasons. I'm really not looking forward to getting to that point especially with a game I really love. Cuz I hate grindy stuff.

So I love achievements, but I don't bother achievement hunting on some games because they have such ridiculous ones. You know, the grind-intensive ones (kill 1 million enemies!) or ones that just require some very specific circumstances.
The experience that stands out for me, however, was from D:OS 2. I'd played the first Divinity Original Sin and 100% completed it which I was proud of because it was a long RPG with quite a few achievements to unlock. Got to D:OS 2 and although I have put in 230 hours into playing it, I still don't have 100% completion. Why? Because it requires you to play complete playthroughs of all 6 of the pregen characters. Yep, 6 different playthroughs of a 100+ hour RPG. I love the game, but no way am I doing that.
The absolute most annoying games, however, are the ones that include an achievement for being a Kickstarter backer. There's absolutely no way to get those achievements unless you backed the game originally. I've spent too much time growling at a 95% completion score, knowing I will never get up to 100% =)

I heard about those kickstarter achievements. That is ridiculous. I'd love to know what they are if you know any of them so I can AVOID them. Divinity is awesome. Actually that beat game with 6 pregen characters thing is something I'd see myself doing even if that achievement existed or not. I did it in Dragon Age Origins and there was no achievement for that. Its a huge time waster though when they are so many games to play out there. Sometimes though some games just hit your sweet spot real good and you wanna experience it over and over so I'm KINDA looking forward to that one. Divinity is a stellar series.

Oh yeah, I love Divinity and I really appreciate Larian as a developer; they are really generous to their customers and don't try to nickle and dime us. I'm really looking forward to their Baldur's Gate 3. I've played DA:O quite a few times too, although that is a considerably shorter game than D:OS 2 =)
As for the kickstarter achievement, I know Pillars of Eternity has one. That's why I never went back to mop up the final difficulty achievements for that game. Iirc, its sequel POE: Deadfire doesn't have such an achievement. However, I played that on GOG where uncompleted achievements aren't as easy to see. FWIW, POE is a fun series if you like isometric RPGs, well worth playing even if you can't 100% them.

Is Divinity really long? I have the first but not the second. What would you say is the average playtime for a single playthrough? I have pillars of eternity. I actually bought it and all the DLC. I was hoping to play baldur's gate before going into pillars but I am not happy about that achievement thing. At all. I wish there was a way to disable achievements. I'm gonna look on the forum to see if there's a way to obtain it.

D:OS 2 is not quite twice the length of the first Divinity I would say. The first Divinity took me around 60 hours to do a complete playthrough (Main + all side quests) and another hour or two to do a speedrun on the hardest difficulty for the final achievements (my total time played in 67 hours). To do a complete run of the sequel will take you 100+ hours; getting all the achievements will take several playthroughs, although if you speedrun those subsequent playthroughs it won't add too substantially to your time (my total time is 230 hours but that is with one complete run, and several partial runs).
If you look at HLTB's average times, they say this:

I'm a completionist so I know the frustration of getting those hard achievements. Funny but there were a lot of achievements that I found really difficult and felt kinda proud after I've done them but I can't really think of anything that was that bad. Like others, I hate achievements that are unreasonably grindy (like getting 1 million kills), I hate speedrunning and hate the ones that require RNG. Some games and achievements that come to mind:

The problem with Greece Lightning is that you have to complete the game 3 times and if you have the Ragnarök DLC you have to do that too. (Well, of course you can disable the DLC in you library.) Since you won't have time to farm XP or equipment you'll have to find the gear you want to use with other characters first (which you can share in a special chest) and choose a class / build that you're good enough with to beat the game on legendary even if you're underleveled. I guess if you are done with the preparation the 20 hour run itself is not that hard.

Finishing Heroic mode in the original Hard Reset (where you couldn't dash) was extremely difficult and enduring, all the checkpoints are removed except the ones at the beginning of the level and it is on the highest difficulty, honestly it took me 25-30 hours to get.
Also completing New York minute Hardcore in Max Payne 3 where you have to do the whole game in one sitting without dying took me many, many tries, and a lot of practice of certain sections as you have to be mentally prepared for every single combat encounter in the game. Not to mention how long it took to find enough people to boost the multiplayer achievements.
Dunwall City trials achievements in Dishonored 1 and the tactical Challenges in Vanquish are also burned in my memory.
I haven't played Spelunky but it sounds like you went through one of those experiences where you're just so desperate to prove to yourself you can do it. Congratulations, it's a personal sense of satisfaction you will carry with you :)

Spelunky was extremely tough (unless you're EXCELLENT at platformers) but damn from most of the posts I've read on here there are so much more difficult challenges. I was only scratching the surface.
I DID see the Max Payne 3 achievement you're talking about and I remember saying to myself "yep...I'm gonna get that game" haha. Congrats on that man. Getting certain achievements should definitely put people on some kind of list, a personal shoutout from the devs or some in-game item you should show off. Seriously. Just the satisfaction of doing it isn't enough any more. Shit is too damn hard!

Hey guys, first real discussion here as I haven't had much to say.
So I just wanted to say first off I never really got the big deal about achievements. Usually they're not that hard to complete and I don't get a lot of satisfaction for getting them. To me, they just waste time extending a game when I've already completed it.
That all changed with Spelunky...
I have never been brutalized in a video game like I have in this one. Holy hell. I mean I got straight raped, stabbed repeatedly with a poisoned claymore, mauled and butchered beyond recognition!
I died in this game 1844 TIMES before I could finally complete all those achievements. It was hell on earth but after I got that final one I felt exhilarated. I welled up in relief and emotion which was a feeling I have NEVER felt for a video game.
Spelunky is the kind of game where the character doesn't get good as you play. There is no real progession and only YOU, the player, level up after dying countless times and learning from every mistake. Its kind of remarkable and I finally got what the whole big deal about people playing Dark Souls was all about.
I'll admit I tend to avoid hard games. I mostly avoid games with a lack of story and I'm one of those guys that AVOID games with difficult tags on steam. I accidently got Spelunky thinking I could walk through it and uhh... yeah I didn't.
Anyway, so I'm very curious to know what were some of your worst experiences with achievements? What did it entail and how did you feel once you completed it (this will also be a good way for me learn about these games and to AVOID them)?
Lastly, why did I complete Spelunky even though I don't like overly difficult games? I have a sickness... I'm a completionist. We are all bound to the game until its done. I hate it...but I am it.
