Why you are here actually: pOKDy

So when you see a user profile with Not Received feedback what do you do:
Do you immediately black list them?
Do you never whitelist them?
Do you never accept them when recruiting to groups?
Do you immediately kick them from all the groups you are admin of?
Do you hunt them down and berate them on Steam? In giveaway comments? In forum threads?
Something else?

With recent PSA I was actually wondering what is the true reaction and result for thing that you need to go to user profile and hover over for...

That makes me wonder, how can we prove in good faith that the key we sent was valid ?
I mean, for example let's see an ugly hypothesis : we buy a game key or a bundle, so we have a digital bill proving that we bought that key or bundle. And we can screenshot to show that it was really the key provided to us when we bought the game/bundle.
And then, the imaginary winner trades the game away or registers it on another account and says "hey key didn't work".
And here we go for a lot of hassle ?
We should... screenshot our game key to support ? Screenshot the digital bill ? But will it be enough ?
If the winner says the key was faulty, how can support be sure he said that in good faith and didn't register / trade away the game ?
And then we've to contact for example humble (lol ?) to get another key ?
Contact steam for example to know "who activated this dlc key ?" If steam just answers "key has been activated 1 day ago", how can we know if gifter or winner activated it on an alt-account or traded it ?

From my point of view, the hypothetical risks and hassles actually are on the gifters. Not just money, but time lost too.
Really we are lucky most people are nice and of good faith.

@hbarkas
unfortunately that's what i feared thanks for your answer

As you mention it: no retailer will give you a replacement key without proof in the form of screenshots of failed activation attempt and your recent license activation history. I had only once a winner who sent me such screenshots. Like you I see the distribution of responsibilities imbalanced.
You have to be lucky if Steam support gives you details of key activation at all. It seems to depend on the mood of the specific staff member.

my "not received" mark haunts my dreams still

Well... I have two "not received" giveaways, but the persons activated the keys and got the game! I saw in their profiles.
When I asked about the negative status, one said: "The game didn't work in my computer" and the other one already had the base game, but won the DLC! Said to me that the status was just about the game! So she wanted the game again!
After that I only do giveaways to people who don't have game+DLC! And create my own whitelist group!

You can try make a ticket to get those fixed if users profiles are visible as they are.

Not sure about proving the activation times though.

I did it about the girl right now! Let me see what happen.
The other one is very hard, because his profile has a lot of games (7000!) and it's too slow to load.
I don't want to add him on Steam.

It is there and adding that user is no use as it won't help...

I track them down and hire The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon to get rid of them.
I would like to see all users with "not received" mark killed off, because they are unworthy of the gift of life.

What do you mean? It's not just me. It's common sense. Otherwise people wouldn't make such drama upon receiving even one "not received" mark.

I took your post as an intendedly over the top, sarcastic comment on the matter and replied in jest, just in case that wasn't clear. ^^

I forgot that you can even check for it. I don't think it's a serious problem, unless they do it repeatedly, and with suspiciously high-caliber games. Not even 10% not received is a bad stat in my eyes, though they seriously should look for a better key source, or sort out the region locks.

Checking my tickets it seems I had problems with 2 games - once a Carmageddon not activating in Germany and we thought deleting the GA is better than gamble for more winners from Germany. In the other case I think I had the key from a Groupees grab bag, and accidentally sent it to another winner. It was unfeasible to get a new key, and expensive on Steam, so I offered another key (likely from their WL) instead of the original, and we agreed on deleting the GA.

I had a win of mine not delivered a looong time ago, back then it felt really bad, so I always tried to avoid getting someone into a similar situation.

Honestly, this is a question I've been wanting to do for long, so thanks.
Imo, I do care for, at least, two reasons.

  • It tells you something about the winner (ofc maybe both agreed to let it as "Non received") but..
  • It's a statistic that will never go off, it's like one of those games with achievements that you can't obtain no matter what, always there. (It matters to me because I like numbers and if I ever get a permanent non received sent gift, I would probably be done here)

There are a thousand solutions for this kind of problem, for example, adam1224 up there ^^ gives a very reasonable solution.
